9-Year-old boy told he's too good to pitch

Nine-year-old Jericho Scott is a good baseball player - too good, it turns out. The right-hander has a fastball that tops out at about 40 mph. He throws so hard that the Youth Baseball League of New Haven told his coach that the boy could not pitch any more.

What these people have done to Jericho and his team is terrible. He should not be penalized for his talents. You all should be ashamed!

Ways to go kid stay in the game and keep up your pitching up with a local high school or with older kids! You going to be a major-League superstar when your 17 or 18 practice your base stealing and hitting home runs, some people will of course be jealous.

This happened to my niece in softball, truly pathetic.

the thing is I coach in a pitching machine for 8 yr olds and we set the speed at 41 mph. These parents are doing their kids a disservice. Eventually they will catch up, but maybe this kid willkeep imroving. Does that mean he can;t play high school ball.

New Haven is now in the running for loser town USA. Way to show a group of kids that quitting is best and if you show any shred of ability at something, then you will be ostracized. Immature adults leading by example. What's next? Scarlet letters for children that speak in a grammatically correct articulate manner. Solitary confinement for a child that can scientifically dispute Al Gore's fraudulent global warming mularkey?

Way to go New Haven. What a bunch of maroons.

What i havent heard how is his control does he have a tendency to hit batters if thats the case,a pitch in the chest area could stop a heart and kill a young person.
I coached baseball to young children and had someone who didnt have the ability to move fast enough to get out of the way, I even notified the umpire so he could give a verbal warning to the player and that didn't work I had the player moved to another age group so he wouln't get hurt.
Move the player up to the more advanced age group and that should help all concerned.
By the way the player that couldnt move almost lost a eye, That is horrible sight to see

I have to agree. Whether or not this kid is an extremely gift athlete, maybe at the adult level already, the other team has a responsibility to play against him whether they are as good as him or not!

I swear..... what are we teaching children today when an extremely talented person is told that he cannot do something because he is 'too good'? Nothing good, in my opinion, and I am an extreme liberal who the joke is that we all support stuff like this.

Big deal. You take that risk when you are playing a sport, and I tell my daughters and other children that they can be JUST AS GOOD as the older children if they work hard enough.

By separating out the people who are 'too good', you are basically telling these other children that they are not 'good enough' to compete with them, which is an absolutely HORRIBLE message to send.

You want your children to be absolutely safe? Never let them out of the house without putting them in a concrete box for transport. That is the ONLY way that they are going to be absolutely safe.

You know, I think that is actually what this is about. This kid is showing up other parent's kids by quite a large amount, they don't like it, so they whined to the other coaches about this until they said "We will quit if he pitches!"

His control was as precise as you'd expect from someone throwing 40 mph. Bunt if you can't swing and hit the ball.

This is what I don't understand we set the speed for our 8 yr olds at 41 mph. It's not like it's humming in there at 70 mph. 8 yr olds can hit it at 40 we had several kids that hit over .500. Only a couple kids had trouble, but they either weren't interested in playing or it was their first year playing.

I read the article on CNN.com and they said that he hasn't hit a batter yet. He's a great pitcher and I think what they are doing to him is Bullsh*t! The article said that the league was going so far as to *demand* that the team be disbanded and that the other players dispursed to the other teams on the league. They are refusing to do that though. But they can't play so long as this kid pitches. One team forfitted their game once he walked to the mound. Packed their gear and went home. These other kids shouldn't be shying away from this kid, they should be playing against him as much as possible, make all of their batting better.

Good grief, isn't little league getting political.

Parents sometimes acting the fool and now a kid can't play because he's too good. Must be haters on the other leagues.

That stinks!

Upper 40's is fast for 9-year olds...but I agree, if he's actually 9, let him throw...someone will come along that can hit him. Besides, he'll throw his arm out well before he turns 11.
