I dont care, Sox fans don't care. The only fans that care about attendance are Cubs fans, for obvious reasons. People always say White Sox fans have the complex, but if you've been visiting these Sox boards this year, it is obvious, the other team's fans are the ones with the complex<quoted text>
The Sox are 28th in the league, that’s not "pretty good". They are up a bit this year though; if you look at their history they are almost always 28th, 29th or 30th in the league. They can't blame that on the national coverage or WGN.
Again, it's not that the Cubs are disproportionally popular for their cities size; it's that the Sox are disproportionally unpopular for an even MLB average size city.
There are always reasons and local coverage is clearly not the reason people nationally stay away from this team in droves. I agree that it does not make anyone less of a fan, but it should be troubling that so many people do not want to be associated with this team. Things like this don't "just happen".

Sorry, JR, but I just don't see the significance in road game attendance. If a team draws well on the road, the most you can say is that the franchise has benefitted from successful marketing. Is that really what you want to hold over our heads? The fact that your marketing department is superior to ours? If so, you've made your point, and you're welcome to it. I do confess, the Cubs have a very effective advertising strategy. Their marketing department is pure genius. They've found a way to turn a century-long losing streak into good PR. Congratulations. I'm sure you're very proud. Now, if you don't mind, the rest of us would like to talk about baseball.

it was all started by Cubs fans with the posts about Griffey only being a marketing ploy
|
|
But he is only a marketing ploy. They have to do SOMETHING to get people to come to that dump. |

NY James, well said my friend. I still cannot figure out why attendance is relevant when the World Series is what the season and winning is about. This isnt a popularity contest, this is baseball. And no matter how hard we try, ScRub fans will twist it around so they feel superior. The Cubs team is in first place and playing good ball. Shouldnt that be enough to make you happy? Judging by these posts, apparently not. I did like a previous post about 2005 being so long ago. Yet ScRub fans throw 1919 in our face. Classic.

JR time, as a White Sox fan, I tend to agree about Griffey. He is not the player he used to be. But he does make the lineup better as a pitcher just cant pitch around the guy in front or back of him. Myself, I would have preferred another pitcher but sometimes they just arent available.

Having the Twins and the White Sox battle it out for first place makes things seem right in the Central. I often wonder why bigger market teams dont offer their coaching staff, scouts, and GM more money.

Dump? The Cell is a much more quality ballpark than Wrigley...i know Wrigley has nostalgia (not going to argue that point) and its in a better area (remember even wrigleyville was a hole once)...but it also has obstructed view seating, crappy food, horrible amenities, disgusting bathrooms, etc etc
but it has weeds on the walls so it's better? I do enjoy wrigleyville bars, but who wouldn't? i do try to avoid them on Cubs day games tho. |

He was hitting the ball in Cinci before he got here and has been contributing more lately. Seemed to light a fire under Konerko too, who's hitting .320 since he got here |

According to that website...the Sox are 16th in total home attendance and 15th in average home attendance this season...not sure where the "28th, 29th or 30th" talk is comign from.
Its not great, but not horrible for the second most popular team in the second city. |

I just saw that you were talking about road attendance, so i digress...
But WGN does have alot to do with that, I have relatives from South Florida who are Cubs fans from long before the expansion teams arrived because thats the only baseball they could watch. Without WGN you have to wonder if the Cubs hype machine would be as strong outside of the greater chicagoland area... |
|
This year, you are correct. Most Sox fans (including myself) after hearing about the trade said, "Griffey? Really? This year?". But as we agreed on last page, the trade may have been made to light a fire under some players, while covering up if it didn't pan out. And in reponse to your previous comment on the subject, you'd like to see these turnarounds without the pressure, but it doesn't always happen. Some players get too comfortable after a new contract and their performance can slip. A high level of competition for playing time can act as a wake up call. I'm not sure if that's what Kenny was thinking when making the trade for Griffey, but that's what I'd like to think. |
|
Hey did you guys notice that the White Sox now have a better record than Boston, and the Twins are now only .5 games back in the wildcard race? We may see both the Sox and Twins in the playoffs this year. |
|
|
Yup, it's going to be a fun race to the playoffs.
Rays, Red Sox, Twins, White Sox. One team's not making it |
|
It seems to me that the reason the Cubs have drawn so well historically on the road is that the opposing team's fans want to see their team win the game. Let's face it, if you're dishing out serious money to attend a ball game, you might as well get more for your money and watch your team crush the hapless Cubs. Odds are pretty good that the Cubs will lose because that has been their mission statement for the past 100 years. If the Cubs should ever win a WS (I know, but just for the sake of argument), would they still call themselves the Lovable Losers? |

so, it's been how long since the cross-town series' and you Cubs fans are still invading Sox boards?......Why? I want an explanation...that's all....just answer why you keep coming to the Sox boards?
|
I sense a "Hands Across America" type moment coming haha. We may have to forget this ever happened and start arguing after tomorrow's game. |
|

Stick to your guns JR, remember, we are all BASEBALL fans here. The trash talking is just the fun part!
|

|
It sad how people want to argue with JR (todays moniker), the poor little bed ridden boy from Northbrook with severe asthma and cublogical math skills.
But please keep it up with Greylock, at least he is funny and wins everytime with those who respond to him. Go Sox (and Reds)! |
