Vikings' turn on top

In the erratic NFL, where dramatic rises and falls are the norm, the Vikings enter the quiet portion of the offseason as the team to beat in the NFC North.

Ok fans. Go back a year and look at the media reports about the Vikings and Packers. You'll see the same kind of predictions... the Vikings on top of the division, with the Packers far behind. I'm not buying it anymore...

For me, the Jared Allen trade is reminicent of the Hershell Walker trade. With Walker, we gave away our future to Dallas and propelled them into the super bowl. We just did the same thing with Kansas City, by giving them all our picks in the draft. The Vikings had 5 picks, with only 1 in the first 4 rounds. KC gets 12 picks, with 2 first rounders, and 7 picks in the first 4 rounds... no doubt the best performance in the draft by any team. And, just like it was with Dallas and Walker, the media in this town has jumped on the bandwagon, and covered up what is another huge debacle.

As for Green Bay, and the retirement of Favre, I think that Rodgers will do much better than the media in this town expects, because many QBs that have learned behind Favre in the past have been successful in the NFL... Hasselbeck with Seattle, Detmer with the Eagles, Brooks with New Orleans, and Brunell with Jacksonville, to name a few. I predict another 8-8 finish for the Vikings, far behind the Packers.

Hey Gary, take 94 East about 25 miles and then give your speech to people who might care to listen to it. You know the kind that would like it, the toothless people who wear dead animals skins on their heads and overalls. Face the fact, your hero #4 is gonzo. When were detmer or brooks ever successful? Tell an eagles or saints fan that and they will slap you. Your O-line is average at best, and the pass has been proven to beat the Pack.. Keep drinking your aaron rodgers kool-aide, because come regular season you will need to start drinkin' hard liquor in order to watch the packqueers.

Comparing the Herchel Walker trade to the Jared Allen trade is asinine, very little similarities.

Why don't you just admit to being a packer fan?
The stupidity gives you away.

Give me a break...comparing this trade to the Herschel Walker trade is just idiotic. We gave away multiple #1s, multiple #2s, multiple #3s, and not to mention the number of players we got rid of as well. To compare this trade to that is just borderline retarded.

Sure we gave up alot but if you take a look at what picks were taken by KC at our spots...

OG Branden Albert
RB Jamaal Charles
S DaJuan Morgan

I think if you said I'll trade you these 3 guys for arguably the best DE in the league...I think you take it. If you want to see a team build within and never makes moves to put them over the top go ahead and watch the Twins and Wild play that way.

Atleast we have one owner in this city who is willing to attempt to put their team over the hump.

I wouldn't compare the Allen trade to Herschel Walker, but I do think that Gary hit it right on the head about the bandwagon media in this town and their past predictions. The Vikings certainly improved on paper, but they neglected to do anything with the offensive line and are no better off at the quarterback position(at least if you want to win this year). I think that we still have to wait to see if the Vikes can win with T-Jack.

I also don't see the Packers taking a huge step back just because Favre stepped down. I think this division is WIDE open, and we should temper our excitement a bit.

Your hatred for the Packers overshadows your brain. Do you watch football? The Packers have the two best Tackles in the league. That average line took them to 18 wins in the last 22 games. Keep calling people names and your bears might win a game or two Joe. All the Packers did was improve on a team that went 13-3 last year.

Offensive didn't need improving...they paved the way for the #1 rushing offense in the league. They needed depth that they did not get but our OLine by no means regressed.

QB is a question...but improvements at the WR position could definitely improve that position as well.

Vikings are not a lock for the division obviously but they are the favorite.

Green Bay won't regress when they lose a Hall Of Fame QB? You just state how the Vikings haven't proved they can win with Tarvaris but you completely neglect the fact that Green Bay is in worse shape then the Vikings with the QB spot...they have NO IDEA what to expect from Aaron Rodgers. 8-8 season for the Pack would be a great season for them.

I still wonder if the Vikings are being helped to be a very good team so that they can get more public assistance building a new stadium. Based on this speculative suggestion, they should have a very good year.

Jerami,
First of all, I did not say that the Packers would not take a step back. I merely stated my opinion that their demise might be greatly exagerated. I have them at 10-6 this year. And, to say that the Packers are in worse shape than the Vikings at QB is ridiculous! Even if Rodgers turns out to be well below average he would be on par with what Jackson has shown thus far.
Finally, the "offense didn't need improving?" What? Look at the rushing stats for A.P. the last four games of last season. He finished with 3, 78, 27, and 36 yards the last four games because teams figured out that T-Jack wasn't jack. Hardly impressive when they needed it most. Forgive me if I am skeptical, but the team's history warrants it.

EastBeast,
You may want to reread my statement...I said the OLINE didn't need improving. Berrian and Rice need to draw attention away from AP and Tarvaris needs to make defenses pay for bring 8 or 9 in the box. Our Offensive Line wasn't the problem...our WR Troy Williamson was a big problem and Tarvaris playing erratically was a problem.

I would much rather have a better QB behind our line but I think Tarvaris can be successful giving the talent he has around him.

Aaron Rodgers is better then Tarvaris? Why is that? Because he was drafted in the late 1st round? Or with those 59 passes he has thrown in his career justified him to leading a team into the playoffs? Tarvaris atleast has had 15+ games of experience...the only experience Rodgers has is holding a clipboard...while on crutches.

did we get a tight end here? see i'm not an expert like you people are. But Sean Jensen is right. the vikings will be good. Just hand it off to Adrian Peterson limit Tavaris' throws run option plays. We'll be straight

You Viking fans can talk all the smack you want, but fact is GB basically covered their remaining depth issues through the draft. I predict that Rogers will outplay any QB in the NFC Central. Why; because GB has the complete team; loaded at WR, solid TE, excellent o-line, and Grant proved he can play. When you add the coaching staff, not to mention the defense; GB is far superior to any of these Central teams. Rogers will be good, but about the only negative is will he stay healthy; if he does, look out, GB will again challenge Dallas, maybe the Giants for the NFC. This team is coming fast and just added more talented young guys.

Jerami,
I now see that you meant to say O-line. What you actually typed was "Offensive didn't need improving..." Misunderstanding. Anyway, I disagree, and I think that the O-line did needed to be addressed - especially since McKinney may be missing time this season. I think we may be in trouble if he is missing or if we suffer even one injury on the O-line.

I definitely agree with your take on the WR's taking pressure off of Jackson. This will be key!

If you read my posts, I never said that Rodgers is better than Tarvaris. We don't know one way or the other. I just found it ridiculous to state that the "Vikings are better off at QB." The facts are that Jackson has been below average at best, and nobody has really seen Rodgers play. The unfortunate thing is that the Vikes don't have a plan B if Jackson fails to show up in his third year.

You can predict all you want about Rodgers, fact is, you have nothing to back it up with. I can predict that he will be the worst QB in the NFL this year, and have nothing more to hang my hat on than you.
The pack's last game? Home field advantage with gusty winds on frozen lameblow. Oh, I forgot, the Giants were a really good team....

Farve gave you 6 wins all on his own last year.
Rodgers will give you a migraine, and the bottom of the NFC North.

There is a reason your thoughs and comments go on these blogs vs you being paid for writing a column in the PP. Did you seriously just say Detmer was a successful QB?? HA!!! He played in 7 games during his 4 year career with the Packers, and it was at the end of his career. His QB rating was about 50%. Ty Detmer played with the Eagles BEFORE being a backup to Favre.

You might be confusing Ty with Koy. Koy never played behind Favre, he was with the Eagles his entire career. Learn about the NFL before you try to educate others....especially when it's something you know little about.

First off, the Packers, although 13-3, were not 13-3 good last year. They beat what, only two teams with winning records last season and they were SD when San Diego was playing poorly and the Giants when they were playing poorly. It is true the NFC will be just as bad this year so a 10-6 caliber team like GB was last year could win 13 games again but they would need everything to go right again as it did last year(meaning every good bounce and guys like Grant playing well). I wouldn't count on it and with Rodgers an unknown, they are more like a 8-8 team then anything else.

The Vikings are a good QB away from being a legit 13-3 team but, if TJack plays like he did last year and McKinnie misses 4 or more games, they are more of a 10-6 first or second round playoff defeat team. If Jackson can simply not turn the ball over and hit one or two recievers downfield a game, they are a true legit super bowl talented team. Of course, they have no depth on the OL and any injuries and they will really suffer.

Mr. "Long Season,"

Ty Detmer was drafted by the Packers and spent his first 4 years in the NFL behind Favre. Other than the fact he was merely a serviceable NFL QB, you don't know what you are talking about. Also, do you know anything about the NFL QB rating system? 50% of what?

I find your lecture amusing.
