Barbaro: One Man's Opinion
OPEN MIKE by Mike Celizic | MSNBC NBC Sports |

part 2

Looking beyond the score in sportsWe watch the Kentucky Derby, anoint the winner as a national hero, then watch the Preakness to see if we’ll have a super horse that wins all three races. After that, we ignore the game until the following May and the next Derby.

Barbaro was one of those horses that was able to fire the imagination. Powerful and fast, it won the Derby impressively and was a favorite for the Preakness. When it broke its right rear leg in three places just 100 yards out of the gate, it was a drama played out before millions on NBC.

Race horses are magnificent animals, and there’s nothing quite like the charge of a field of elite horses as they round the final turn and head into the home stretch. It’s so beautiful a sight we ignore the whips the jockeys flog the horses with, and we don’t stop to think of how close to disaster every horse is with every stride.

They’re like sports cars, highly tuned, as fast as they can be made, and incredibly fragile. A thoroughbred weighs a half ton and runs on ankles that aren’t any thicker than a man’s arm. They’re expensive to keep -$50,000 a year – and far more expensive to buy. They get drugs to prevent bleeding in the lungs and anti-inflammatories and maybe pain killers; the rules on what you can give racehorses are a lot less stringent than those governing what you can give humans.

And even the most humane of trainers knows that if the horse can’t race, it’s not worth a whole lot. And horses that can’t win and don’t have stud value frequently end up sold to slaughterhouses. That’s just the way it is.

It’s great that people care about Barbaro. But the horse racing industry had better hope that doesn’t make the public care about all race horses. If it did, it could kill the industry. Because of people went down at the rate horses did, no one would allow it to continue.

Quote from a slaughterhouse worker:

"You move so fast, you don't have time to wait till a horse bleeds out. You skin him as he bleeds. Sometimes a horse's nose is down in the blood, blowing bubbles, and he suffocates."

A Butcher in France.[2]

"I only buy American meat, which is red and firm. In butchering terms we call it 'well-structured', the best you can get. Out of a thousand animals, only the American ones are really worth buying. But they don’t eat horsemeat in America. They raise horses for foreigners."

It was just thinking you seem like such a caring person, and so set in your convictions. That maybe you had respect for unborn life also.

I am a caring person...otherwise I wouldn't be writing emails here about atrocities commited on animals and people already here....A for unborn life...it's all in how you perceive it...and it's another subject....I'm 62 years old and have seen a lot of life and had many of my share of ups and downs...I've buried a son....I know what pain is...I don't like to see anybody or any animal have to suffer...so I will keep on fighting!!

It can't end fast enough!!!To bad it takes the death of these beautiful animals to wake some people up!!

am an ex race horse trainer, I feel that the intentions of PETA are noble and I want to help however I can. I have seen first hand what the horses actually mean to the racing industry. they are treated like money making machines and when they can't produce any more money for the owners, the horses are cast off like garbage. I was sickened to see Eight Belles break down, and I was appauled to see what was done to barbaro, that poor horses never had a chance for even a semi normal life after the derby. Something needs to be done to protect the horses even more so now.

I worked for many years with thoroughbreds and that is what they are they are not just horses. Try going to a farm where these horses are bred and you can see the foals and yearlings running through the fields with the mares.Forty years ago I worked at a farm in Ocala Fl.called Ocala Stud Farm and I can tell you this there were three swimming pools just for the horses to build and strengthen bone and muscle structure. That farm is still there and conditioning horses the same way. I can also say that noone was allowed on a horses back until they were 2 and if they were a late foal by that I mean April or May you still didn't get on them until they were true 2 yr olds. What happened to Eight Belles was a tragedy but for anyone to blame the rider or say she was on steroids is completely ridiculous. If you are on a horse such as Eight Belles who had a tendency to lug in coming down the stretch you go to the left handed whip like this rider did. This tragedy was a freak accident that was unavoidable.Noone could foresee this happening. I've watched this race over 50 times and never saw the horse take a bad step and I would think that with over 17 yrs off and on working with these fine animals I would know what to look for.

Everyone one is disagreeing with you,you don't make sense. What does that mean'she can afford to be a philantrapist',thats original and certainly mutually exclusive, personally, I wouldn't want you owning horses. No, the ignorance of you and anyone who wants to see beautiful creatures running on little spindly legs comes really shining through....at least dmanzi knows what is going on...unless of couse you didn;t bother to read it...and as for spelling brightboy lets correct yours...Must be someone hit you with the Stupid Stick in school!!

This is the first time in the history of the Kentuck Derby that a horse, male or female had to be euthonized IS SPELLED EUTHANIZED on track, maybe it will make horse men and woman more aware, don't crucify a great industry because of one incident, this creates a livelyhoodIS SPELLED LIVELIHOOD for many thousands of people, also. Mary Lou Whitney owns horses for krist IS SPELLED CHRIST sakes, she is a wonderful Lady and philantripistIS SPELLED PHILANTHROPIST. I doubt you would see her associated with a fragile, worthless sport, if what you say was true.

Shows just how intelligent you are...maybe you should just stop writing your garbage

Sharon, you really need medical attention, you cannot be serious about the crap you have been posting. I've never heard such stupid, incoherent jibe, in all my life, get over yourself, you do not know anything about the business of thoroughbred racing, or aspects including, care and management of the equine species .I was an intern for the chief veterinarian for Barbaro, and cared for the horse during his tragedy, the owners of Barbaro the Jackson's, were wonderful people, and were there every step of the way with Barbaro, they cried when he went down in the Preakness, and when he died, you are a malicious, vindictive person, your wrong to be blunt, in every comment or thought you've posted, I am neutral, I am telling you what I witnessed first hand during the awful consequence of this horse, an athlete, and a champion, in the truest sense of the word.

Sharon you are in need of a shrink,Amanda is the real deal. I've seen her website, her family owns a beautiful horse farm in Lompoc Ca.- she has horses in Berkshire county, also,(her family), she did the intern job by accident, she went to the rehab facility to care for horses and ended up as one of the caregivers to the horse (Barbaro) when she was at a Pennsylvania Universtiy, so shut uuuup!

Regardless of whether you eat meat or not...the point is we as "supposedly intelligent" human beings have to speak up for abused animals...and a magnificent horse that weighs 2,000 pounds racing on legs that are so very fragile is an abused animal...people who choose to race these animals are arrogant and don,t care 2 whits what happens to them...they just want the money and fame....the horse has no choice....they are helpless and have no voice...just the same as small children that are abused....we can only stop this abuse by speaking up...not making a joke out of it!
Are you kidding. I'm sure that you are a Christian or a Jew or something along those lines, and while I'm not, you probably believe God put animals on this Earth for us. It's a sport, we are the more intelligent animal and thus we get to exert our authority over those less intelligent, much like the smartest make it to the top and end up running companies. You and the rest of your PETA friends should just sit back, get a massage, and chiiillllll.
