Respect horses in triumph, tragedy
As an avid horseperson of over 30 years I was saddened by the tragedy that surrounded the Kentucky Derby this past Saturday.

I'm glad the picture was printed...let people see the ugliness of horse racing...no one asks the horse if they want to run their 2000 lb. body on a pair of legs no bigger than a thin piece of spaghetti!!!It's people who are stupid and ignorant enough to allow this...for their own pleasure...my, my aren't humans just wonderful!! |
Now, now let's not attack humans. After all no attack ever gave a preschooler glue. |

Methinks you and the truckdriver must have been SMELLING glue as preschoolers...LOL...Glad you wouldn't be caretakers of any person or animal I loved!!! |
Unless you are a vegan, maybe you are. I find it very hypocritical to be posting on how bad humans treat animals. |
And now we're building a carousel by CVS. Have we no regard for horses after the tragic demise of
Eight Belles? Those who support this type of thing should be made to sit through a three course meal at Spice when it reopens! |

Horse racing could be a wonderful sport if it weren't for the ignorance of people who are stupid and greedy. Those who breed them for speed only and ignore bone strength. Those who begin training them too hard too soon.
Watching the horses run is a thrilling experience. When Secretariat won the triple crown many years ago, I was in awe of that horse! The atmosphere at a racetrack early in the morning when the horses are working out is unlike anything you can imagine. Exciting, fun and peacful all at the same time. I hope changes are made to save the horses from those who are up to no good. |
I don't quite know whats going on, but my logic tells me that the horse business stopped caring about how they ran them, and started caring how much they could bring in the breeding shed, I guess the Kelso's of the world did all the dirty work, for the next generation of future Arab livestock, some of these horses run ten times, Kelso ran about 110, get my drift. |
I don't eat meat or humans!! Nor do I mistreat them!! Do you??? |
I'm an omnivore, if it tastes good I'll eat it. My cat seems to think I treat him well. I can respect your point a bit more, saying that you don't eat meat. However vegans believe that using any animal product is the mistreatment of them. Wool, leather, eggs, cheese, honey. If I was a cannibal, I probably wouldn't eat clowns, I bet they taste funny. |
Regardless of whether you eat meat or not...the point is we as "supposedly intelligent" human beings have to speak up for abused animals...and a magnificent horse that weighs 2,000 pounds racing on legs that are so very fragile is an abused animal...people who choose to race these animals are arrogant and don,t care 2 whits what happens to them...they just want the money and fame....the horse has no choice....they are helpless and have no voice...just the same as small children that are abused....we can only stop this abuse by speaking up...not making a joke out of it! |
Go to Dallas Keen .com I think you will change your mind, you can even talk to them on the telephone, they race horses and love them, they'll give you what you need to rethink about abuse of equine animals, my own opinion, horses were made to run, baby, its the way there treated that concerns me, as yourself. |
I'm not pretending to know about how bad or good racing horses are treated. If you want to equate humans to animals then that is your belief. If you wear leather, or wool then maybe you should stop and think a bit about how that product came to be on your body before weep too loud for a race horse. Now I know this is going to open a can o' worms, I just can't let it go. If you replace horse with unborn in your statement you'd sound like a pro-lifer, which maybe you are, maybe you're not. |

Psssst Sharon, this conversation ended 9 hrs. ago. |
If it ended 9 hours ago what are you doing back here??Why aren't you out racing around a track?? Here is how the ASPCA responded....with intelligence...unlike some of what I've read here...the last paragraph is most important: THE ASPCA RESPONDS TO TRAGIC DEATH OF EIGHT BELLES Tragedy struck at Churchill Downs this past Saturday, when Eight Belles—the first filly to run the race since 1999—collapsed with two broken ankles after coming in second at the Kentucky Derby. Due to injuries so severe she couldn’t be moved off the track, the three-year-old equine was euthanized immediately following the race. While there is no evidence that Eight Belles was the victim of abuse, the fact remains that she was subject to compete in a sport known for its inhumane tactics. “The fragile nature of thoroughbred racehorses and the stress and rigors these animals undergo are loudly evidenced in this tragedy,” said ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres.“The sport of horse racing is no different than other forms of entertainment where animals are forced to perform, oftentimes in stressful and inhumane conditions. These include being raced too young before reaching physical maturity, being raced excessively, being forced to run on hard or slippery surfaces or being injected with drugs to enhance performance.” It is unfortunate that almost all racing jurisdictions—New York being one exception—now allow potent anti-inflammatory analgesic drugs to be administered to injured and lame horses to keep them racing in spite of chronic and painful injuries. |
I am not a Pro-Lifer(how did this get into the conversation??)...but I am for LIFE...and any living being, animal, human or otherwise that is on this earth has a right to that LIFE...and not be forced to run or entertain for anyone's pleasure.....we did abolish slavery...except for animals and children...and yes, there is child slavery going on in the good old USA just as there is animal slavery...just listen to the news or google it online... |

Don't be a smart mouth, ninety nine percent of owners are very caring, loving, and wonderful people who love there animals, racing will never be banned, if that's what your objectives are, the Arabs treat there horses like royalty, do you think a horse has a trainer because they abuse the horse? Racing is a business first and foremost, and the horses in the care of the owner does just that, care. If it were up to you there would be no horses, just animals wandering aimlessy with broken ankles and untreated diseases like colic, starving, while they roam the countryside, get real. This is the first time in the history of the Kentuck Derby that a horse, male or female had to be euthonized on track, maybe it will make horse men and woman more aware, don't crucify a great industry because of one incident, this creates a livelyhood for many thousands of people, also. Mary Lou Whitney owns horses for krist sakes, she is a wonderful Lady and philantripist. I doubt you would see her associated with a fragile, worthless sport, if what you say was true. |
If it were up to me all animals including owners would have loving homes..not being used for sport...that's not love...that called GREED...but you people who want hotse racing could care less...I may be a "smart mouth" but that's better than being a "dumb" horse rave lover who doesn;t care what happens to these beautiful animals...Mary Loy Whitney can afford to a philanthropist because she makes her monwy off the backs of her horses...What a woman!! Your ramblings don;t even make sense...my niece owns horses and she doesn't race them....she LOVES them and cares for them...as along as their are people like you who want to be entertained and win a few bucks on a horse there will be this abuse...You should be really proude of your ignorance...it definitely comes shining through!! |

Barbaro: One Man's Opinion
OPEN MIKE by Mike Celizic | MSNBC NBC Sports | Looking beyond the score in sports The outpouring of emotion over the life-threatening injury suffered at the Preakness by Belmont winner Barbaro is extraordinary. People even kept vigils outside the hospital where the horse underwent hours of surgery to save its life. The concern is touching, but somewhat misplaced. Extraordinary efforts are being made to save Barbaro’s life. That’s not because the horse has a great personality or because its owners love it to pieces, but because if it lives, it’s worth tens of millions of dollars in stud fees; if it dies, it’s worth a check from the insurance company. I wasn’t able to find an authoritative figure for the number of thoroughbreds that die each year on race tracks big and small. In Great Britain, where better records appear to be kept, the number given is 375 a year — better than one a day. In the United States, PETA, which has a non-existent threshold of outrage when it comes to animals, has posted a blistering accounting of the dangers to the animals inherent in thoroughbred racing. The animal-rights advocates claim more than 800 racing-related deaths a year. I'm not the biggest fan of PETA's tactics and some of the group's philsophy, but statistics are statistics, and these aren't pretty. Whatever the number, it’s large. Most people never hear of them, either. That’s not surprising. Horse racing, which once was enormously popular, is a fading sport, ignored by the public at large for all but that little sliver of spring during which the Triple Crown races are run. |
