This Cubs vs. Sox crap is SOOOOOO OLD!?!? I like BOTH teams...Yeah, I said it. I am more for Sox over Cubs and I think BOTH teams are fun to watch. I dig Big Z and I also dig Paul K?! So What?! I am so sick and tired of the whining, griping, fighting, and other nonsense between the fans. I like the spirit of competition and I wish it could be a playful conflict but some of you folks out there take this rivalry waaay to seriously. Settle down!
My dream is they both surprise and play each other in the series...Pie in the sky? Yes. But better than shooting a bunch of low-brow dribble at each other...Making baseless claims of class or whatever. Relax.
Rivalry? What rivalry? Do you mean the supposed "rivalry" that the White Sox fans made up because they have no natural rival? Ask a Cub fan who their rival is. 99 times out of 100 they will say St. Louis.(The other time it will be a Sox fan in disguise.) No, there is no "rivalry" here.

It's sad, and we feel sorry for them. They have little or no fans, they have no rival, and the only time they get a sound bite on the news is when their head clown goes off on another expletive-filled tirade.

AMEN!!!! I can't believe that a Cubs loss still beats a Sox win for front page coverage. I've gotten used to being an underdog but I've got to tell you it's frustrating to see the nonstop Cubs adulation for a team that continually chokes!

Typical Sox fan response. You "don't even have to read this article to respond," but "THANK YOU Mike for speaking the truth." Since you are a Sox fan, I need to explain this very slowly. For the record, nobody blames a stupid goat or a black cat or any other curse. It's cute, it's a urban legend, and it's fun. But nobody really believes it.
What we (the real Cub fans) blame is the Wrigley family. They knew that the fans would come out to the ballpark win or lose, and they kept the team as a tax writeoff. When the Trib bought the team, they realized the same thing. Only recently did they decide to sink some money into the team, because a championship team is worth more when it's sold.
Jerry Reinsdork has the opposite problem. Even after winning a championship, he can't get anyone to show up and support his team. So he's acting like the Video Professor guy, begging people, "please try my product. Please..." He's pathetic, like the whiny Sox fans. "Oh, boo hoo, the Cubs get all the attention." Get over it. The Cubs have fans, real fans.(They also have tourists who show up to party at the shrine of baseball, too.)
For as smart as you claim to be, you know very little about the Cubs and the Wrigley family. If I remember right, the family sold the team because of tax ramifications. PK Wrigley died and the family would have taken a bath in inheritance taxes. The Cubs weren't selling anywhere near the tickets you seem to incorrectly maintain when the team was sold. I wonder if you were even old enough to read when the team was sold. If it makes you feel good about yourself to call Sox fans dumb, knock yourself out.

Funny, I don't seem to recall the article saying the Sox should have more attention paid to them than the Cubs. The writer simply pointed out that the Sox were doing better than everyone expected, therefore wondering why no credit has been given. He wasn't half as worked up as the Cub fans who disagreed with him. You ought to lighten up as winning seasons don't happen very often in this town.

This article is beyond stupid and the basic reason I don't read Downey's crap. Here's three reasons why nobody cares about the White Sox and are excited about the Cubs:

1. The Cubs are tied for the best record in baseball while the Sox are under .500.

2. The Cubs lead the Majors in runs scored and are 7th in runs allowed.

3. Chicago has always supported the Cubs more than the Sox, why would it be any different when the Cubs have the best record in baseball?

A few more reasons:

Fukudome, Soto, Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Zambrano

High OBP

The Sox are under .500 and probably going to stay there

Give me a break loser. The sox are a game UNDER .500, The Cubs are 8 games OVER .500. That is a huge difference. So you and Ozzie Guillen can whine all you like, but the fact is the Cubs are better than the Sox currently.

While were on the subject, what's the deal with all of the talk on ESPN about the New Orleans Hornets and the Spurs and Lakers and nothing about the Bulls and Clippers? Why no mention of the Blackhawks during the hockey coverage last night? How about Joe Biden's political campaign? He sure is getting shafted by the media, huh?

It's only an urban legend when it's used against you. I guess everyone blaming Steve Bartman is an urban legend too. And this notion of "real fans" is rediculous. Most of the people in the stands wouldn't know the last time the Cubs made the World Series. And the fact that gas is the only thing that increases at a more rapid rate than Cubs' ticket prices (even if they don't win playoff games), that will only ensure those so called "real fans" won't be able to attend anyway.
Now that you mention it, the media blamed Steve Bartman, not Cub fans. Cub fans are knowledgable about the game and knew where to place the blame. Three people lost that game: Alex Gonzalez let a double-play ball go through his legs, then Mark Prior fell apart and Dusty Baker refused to pull him. Bartman had nothing to do with that game, and he certainly didn't lose game 7 for us. Anyone who claims to blame Bartman is not a true Cub fan, and is probably a Sox fan. You guys will do anything to try and make the Cubbies look bad. Give it up and take all that energy and put it into supporting your own team.

The fact that so many of these ''the Cubs are sooo.... popular; the Sox have no fans/are trash'' posts appear to be from out-of-towners just confirms to me that its largely the ''Wrigley Field fans'' outside the Chicago area that give the Cubs the stupid fan perception, which is sometimes well deserved. Seriously, how can someone from Des Moines or Topeka have any idea about this rivarly?

Sox fans don't really care what the Sox do as long as the Cubs lose. And when the Cubs are not losing they need to whine about something else. The Cubs are the nations team, Sox fans can't get over that.

If I remember right, the team was sold about 5 years after P.K. Wrigley died, and it was indeed sold to pay estate taxes. It was a known fact that ownership of the Cubs was a personal hobby of P.K. so there was no reason for William to keep the team after he was gone. Were you reading back then? No matter. Sox fans are so bitter they will make up anything about the Cubs. As I said earlier, you should just put all that energy into supporting your own team instead of continuing this fake "rivalry." You might be pleasantly surprised.

If I estimated right, most of these comments come from way too defensive Cubs fans. Listen up, folks: your team is doing quite well, and you should be proud of that. Downey's not saying anything contrary to that fact, so don't act like martyrs. But what he is saying is that there are things to get excited about with the Sox as well. He's not saying that the Cubs and Sox are on the same level as each other, but in a two-team city, both teams should be given some respect and criticism alike. Don't give me that crap about there being more Cub fans out there, which may be true, because there are plenty of Sox fans out there who give a **** about their team, and we want to see them do well. All in all, celebrate that your team is doing well Cub fans, and ignore Downey if you disagree. But you really can't with this article. The Sox are contending, even if their division sucks. When it comes time for October baseball, it doesn't matter whether a team squeaks in barely above .500 or with the best record in baseball. Only a quarter of the season has passed, and there's a lot more to come. Remember last year when Pinella threw his hissy fit on the field and did some great dirt-kicking? He was lauded for turning the team around. Ozzie gets pissed at the dumb media questions and everyone calls for him to get fired. Double-standard, perhaps?

Fox Sports blamed Bartman. All the Cub fans watched the replay and saw what really happened.

Pardon my language, but it occurs to me that a number of Cubbie fans here may be masturbating as they type. ''Nation's team, we're popular, everyone loves the Cubs, Cubs have always been more popular, our fans are better.'' This is stroke material if I've ever heard it.

There are TWO teams in this city with plenty of fans each. Both are contending, and should receive the same type of media coverage.

Since 1990, the White Sox have finished lower than 3rd in the league/division one time.

Since 1990, the cubs finished better than third 3 times.

If you like the cubs, that's your deal. But please never say they are better.
