SGEE, Of course, you don't want to start rumours! You would never drag a hard working young man's name thru the gutter from the safety of your anonimity as a blogger. Did you ever notice how when people say, "no offense intended but", they usually go on to offend the hell out of you? Did Cody run over your dog or steal your girlfriend? How well do you suppose your body would hold up to 4 years of defensive line play at Oklahoma and the 3 years in NFL pratices? You may not be aware of this but the sport Cody plays is extremely violent. Many players have their careers ended or stalled by injury. This even happened before the steriod era. Imagine that. Cody is a story because most teams would have released a guy like him a long time ago except for one thing. Apparently he has shown a tremendous amount of talent and promise, enough so the Ravens keep giving him a chance. He was a second round pick after all and the Ravens do very well with defensive second round picks. You don't think they've kept him around just because he is a nice guy do you? This is a business, dude, as soon as you don't fit into their plans, boom, you are history. |
|
I will gladly eat my remarks if Cody can make it through the entire 2008 season without having a season ending injury. But likewise, you should come back and eat your words and acknowledge we know as much as you do if he does not. |

DUH! Did you even read the whole post? I stated, as an explanation for his injuries, you have 3 scenarios: 1) They were all freak injuries 2) His body was just never intended to take the pounding in the NFL 3) Performance enhancing drugs have broken down his ligaments and tendons in his joints, which is a major symptom. Considering we had an ex-Steeler just die that said how the sport is replete with steroids, you're thinking or suggesting I am some how trying to stir up the pot is absurd, and shows you have your head in the sand. If you really think performance enhancing drugs are no where to be found in the NFL, I have a bridge to sell you. The human body has not evolved naturally in the last 20-30 years to be producing the men we see on the football of today, or else the whole general population would be 6'2 and able to bench press 300 lbs. Get with reality. As for Cody, I don't know his particular circumstances. Nice guy, met him at a Ravens Roost meeting. I hope he can stay healthy this year. I am surprised they have stuck with him this long though. 3 years, 16 downs. How much of your ticket prices were paying for his contract? If he is not on any drugs, good for him, but then he should hang it up after the next injury. Some players are just naturally not physically able to perform in the NFL. They are the best of the best. But to not wonder if there might be chemicals involved means you are the most optimistic naive' person around. Where there is smoke, there is fire. As a person who's job it is to be investigative and analytical and not believe in what you are spoon fed, it makes me question. |

Mike, I have to agree.Ihave also suffered the same knee injury Cody has and I'll be damned if I ever took steroids. The Posterior ligament resulted from a collision with Pryce in a game. As for a broken foot while warming up, if that isn't bad luck I don't know what is.By the way, the injuries Ray Lewis has had over the past few years are more closely related to steroid abuse but no one would ever accuse Ray of the things being implied here. |

SGEE, Sure I read your entire post. Here’s what really stood out: “But, I can't help but think there may be performance enhancing drugs involved with Cody.” So you think using a modal verb and the subjunctive mood gets you off the hook, huh? The NFL has a long and glorious history of chemical abuse of all sizes shapes and colors. Read or see North Dallas Forty. NFL fans didn’t need all those dead ex-Steelers to tell them that. The NFL is a sordid, exploitative business and has been for a long time. If you haven’t been aware of this for about 30 years then you need to get with reality. Here is another concept you might look up. You have trouble when it comes to distinguishing between causality and correlation. For example, eating breakfast has long been correlated with success in school for elementary school children. It would be easy to conclude that eating breakfast causes students to be better learners. It turns out that those who don’t eat breakfast are also more likely to be absent or tardy — and it is absenteeism that is playing a significant role in their poor performance. When researchers retested the breakfast theory, they found that, independent of other factors, breakfast only helps undernourished children perform better. Now what does this have to do with Cody? Well some NFL players who took steroids have had chronic injury problems. Cody has chronic injury problems. You have noticed a correlation between Cody’s injuries and other NFL players whose injuries are steroid related. So you have assumed that Cody’s injuries are caused by steroid use. Your post linking Cody with steroids is the first I’ve seen implying Cody’s injuries are due to steroids abuse. Did Cody abuse steroids either at Oklahoma or elsewhere leading to this problem? I have no farging idea. I assume he has passed whatever the NFL uses for screening. Beyond that it is entirely possible to have his -problems without ever having used steroids. More to the point, I have this rather quaint notion that as far as steroid abuse is concerned he is innocent until proven guilty. If you want to be a crusading investigative reporter then get a job at the Daily Planet. SGEE, look up the concept of innocent until proven guilty. It is a cornerstone of American belief. You might be interested to know this is America and it even applies to mean-spirited people like you. You say you’ve met Mr. Cody and you like him. Still you are perfectly happy to link him in print with steroid abuse when no else has and when you have no evidence. God help him if you disliked him. Cheers! |

Yes it has been implied in many discussions. Perhaps you are a Johnny come lately, but it has been discussed. And actually, the things with Cody is a couple of his injuries were low or no contact injuries, that is where in the difference lies. |
|
Well, you show your ignorance. I am not the only person who has posted suspicions his injuries are chemically induced. And I am not denying that is prevalent in the NFL. Obviously, you want to engage in a discussion, and thats fine. I offered an OPINION and offered 3 scenarios. I suspect one of the 3 is more likely. I make my opinions based on facts I see. Sometimes people like you like to have rose-colored glasses on, and thats fine, an admirible trait. But I dont. My job is to "sniff" out fraud. In Cody's case, it is not fraud, he wuould have just been doning what everyone else is doing, his body just can't handle it. Whether with or without chemicals. And I acknowledge, there are cases when athletels beef up their bodies so much....guess what ...human physiology can't handle the bigger muscles. Knees are a weak spot. For all the lifting, your bones, ligaments and tendons don't. They bear a larger burden, which breaks down. I know, both of my knees are gone and I can never play sports again, well, maybe golf, but that really isnt a sport at my level of play. But to give blanket blindness as you are, you need to take off the rose glasses. |

I'll have you know that I know more about football than any man who has ever lived. Vince Lombardi used to call me for advice. (Well, ok, that was my wife; she had a 1-900 number, but you get the idea). As for being a "kid", that's what Babe Ruth used to call me when we both played for the 1914 O's. So is Cody hurt yet? |
|
The psychology of his tenure w/ the team hanging from a single ligament ... I'd like to see most of you arm-hair managers TRY and get thru a single one of these injuries. You've never been injured. You dont know what you're talking about. Have some humility.
Oh, who am I kidding ? 110 Volts and no light. What am I DOING here ! |

SGEE, As a professional fraud sniffer and truth seeker, don’t you think you have an obligation to keep the rest of us ignorant folks informed? So you are saying there are other people out there speculating on steroid abuse by Cody? Do they have any proof? Has anyone come up with anything solid? If so why don’t you share it with us. The link between steroid abuse and injury has been out there for some time and is now used too easily as a way to smear people. If Cody abused steroids, he is now paying for it and may continue to do so. Now that you have been provoked into explaining yourself a bit further I can see we don’t disagree on anything too substantive, except for one thing. You talk about basing your opinions on “facts I see”. If you are going to offer an opinion in print on something as serious as steroid abuse by a professional athlete then cite your sources and let everyone know just how solid your “facts” are. It is chilling that you think someone who prefers to regard people as innocent until proven guilty, who insists on a higher standard of proof before condemning people has a “need to take off the rose colored glasses”. This is a blog and it is also America so you are free to throw out any base canard you wish. You are free to smear Cody without proof if you wish but you are also subject to being asked “SGEE, why are you pointing the steroid abuser finger at Cody?”. And if the people asking you to do this have misread your post you are also free to say ” Hey, I didn’t mean to imply that Cody was using steroids”. Your attitude is the same sort of thinking prevalent in Germany in the 1930’s and it enabled the Nazi takeover. There was also something called an Inquisition in Spain a long time ago, the Salem witch trials, I think most people get the picture. I know this is only a simple Ravens blog but there is a thesis that the great evils in history were not executed by fanatics or sociopaths but rather by ordinary people who accepted the premises of their leaders and therefore participated as if their actions were normal. This is generally referred to as the banality of evil thesis. |

Then maybe you can tell me what is it with the Packers and retirement. Lombardi retired from the Packers citing "burnout" and then the next year he comes back with the Redskins! Reggie White retires from the Packers then suddenly wants to come back,is prevented from doing so and the next year comes back for a year with the Carolina Panthers. |

I tore an acl while planting my foot to catch a pop fly.For you and some of the other experts let me remind you that this injury normally results from athletes doing just that.Today the injury is being seen much more among girls playing lacrosse and basketball. As I said he broke his foot warming up and suffered a posterior ligament tear after colliding with Pryce. If the Ravens wanted to unload the guy they would have reached an injury settlement like they just did with Mike Smith. |

Damn guys this is a very sticky subject. You all have points.steroids can induce codys injuries just as can genetics. the ravens havnt given up on cody cuz if healthy he has obviously shown he can fullfill his once immense promise. One can only wonder what if 4 cody who ran a 4.65 40 n played even faster. played at6'5 260lbs and played even bigger n stronger. VERY explosive off the line and a wide variety of pass rush moves and a hard striker not 2 mention played with rare intensity. would have made a hell of an OLB. One has 2 wonder what was known of cody that dropped him into the 2nd round?? at th end of his college season he was projected an early 1st round pick.
