I don't see why they get to pick a replacement candidate; nobody filed a valid nomination in the first place.

I could hope that the machine politics are getting a little shaky. I'm a lifelong democrat and what passes for "party" politics in this state is just sickening. Rumours are going around that the hospital layoffs on the big island are machine politicians in the state legislature trying to make Gov. Lingle look bad.

The inevitable result of long term rule by one party is corruption. Doesn't matter the party or the location. This whole last minute filing story stinks to high heaven.

Shatz would say that you are dragging the election into the Mud which brings up a serious question: why would good people want to participate in politics --- if the Shatz-type hacks of the world create noise, interference, propaganda and deception every time someone calls for a fair process? all the public wants is some intellectual honesty, fairness, and good people in government ---- in this chain of events, Shatz did nothing to help meet this need

Aren't we all glad these folks [who are challenged by simple things like signature requirements and deadlines] aren't involved in important things like police protection, fire protection, roads, sewers, schools, environmental protection, health care insurance, regulation of business.......... oh, they are. ..ummmm...... never mind.

It's fair to say that most Democrats are just people who lean towards social programs, except in this State where it means do-as-you-please for reward dirty politics. Shatz will probably end up with the Mansho's and Fat Boy Okuda's when his "Democratic" deeds are done.

This whole mess was caused by Ann Kobayahsi and her slimey deal to sell her council seat to Duke Bainim. That carpetbagger doesnt' even live in the state much less the district. Why isn't someone investigating the real electrion fraud here?????

Brian Schatz runs the Democratic Party or he runs the Office of Elections? Oops, I forgot he runs both, that is part of the responsibilities of the Chairman of the Hawaii Democratic Party! This is better than the hanging chads of Florida! Caldwell, a licensed attorney and Majority leader of the House of Representatives doesn't know if he had the correct number of signatures....15? You have got to be kidding? I forgot, a employee of the office of elections, while on the clock at work signs the nomination papers for a candidate to get the required amount of signatures? Anybody see at the minimum a ethics violation? Someone please investigate!

The Democratic Party should simply name Eads to replace Caldwell on the ballot so all this whining and nonsense can stop.

It appears Caldwell didn't have the required number of valid signatures at the filing deadline. Allowing someone from the city clerks office to sign after the deadline is definitely wrong. How can the city clerk (Denise DeCosta) allow this to go on under her nose. Isn't she the staunch defender of the law. Hopefully the state elections office straightens this out, sooner rather than later.

Caldwell withdrew prior to the filing deadline.
And then he screwed up again and believed Schatz/Mufi/da Costra when they said, "Don't worry, I take care."

Unfortunately, I think it is the Caldwell withdrawal from the House race that gives the Dims the right under state law to name a replacement. They could very well name Eads, but there is probably some Dim somewhere who wants to run - not sure Eads rally wanted to run. Its the stupid "replacement" law that needs to be changed. Why should any "party" be allowed to simply name a candidate after the filing deadline? Either someone runs as a member of that party or they don't. The GOP had a candidate, the Dims didn't. Their properly filed candidate withdrew. There is no reason they should be saved by state law because they didn't have another lined up Again, they have passed a law intended to continue to perpetuate power unto themselves. Banana Republic of Hawaii.
