I like it, yes he's getting up there in age and his best years are behind him. But the fact of the matter is he is a 4 time all star and an 8 time gold glove winner, the guy knows what he's doing on a baseball field. This isn't some 4th outfielder that some team ran out of room for. Now granted he's been injured the last couple years and has lost a step or 2 but not many guys read a ball off the bat like he does and in Wrigley a good jump is all you need to get to a lot of balls. Not much of a gamble in my opinion. Both guys can play an above average center field, but, Pie is gonna hit in the low .200s all season and Edmonds is a career .290ish hitter. Go ahead and take a chance, it won't cost us anything.

Well I DON'T like it one bit. No risk?!? There's no way this guy covers center as well as the personnel we already have in place. Yes we might get lucky and his hitting come around for a last gasp, but I don't think we want to risk the defensive consequences. Cubs are a little fragile defensively already and they seem to have the offensive capability to absorb a low average at one position. And who knows what the impact might be on the clubhouse. I don't see how the Cubs can possibly make this move.

Can we sign the Jim Edmonds of the 1990s? No? Then forget it.

BTW, I took a quick look on his Wiki page to see if he's ever won an MVP (he hasn't, I was right) and the page has been updated to say, "Edmonds is expected to sign with the Chicago Cubs on May 14, 2008." Wow, that was fast.

Excellent move for the Cubs and Edmonds if they come together. Edmonds would surley want to show LaRussa and the Cardinals what a mistake they made with him. Edmonds would also be great as a DH in those interleague games. This might be the end for Pie, and he would be great trade bait for someone like Baltimore if they want something for 2b Roberts.
This could be the year!
Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Fukedome, Soto, Edmonds....I see many runs generated with those guys.
Edmonds wanted to get out of STL.
and
Edmonds sucks.
why bother?

Have fun watching that major league team from Indiana. Oh, that's right, there isn't one. Also, I like the evidence you use to support that statement. Sox fans, can't live with 'em, can't shoot 'em

I'd rather give the kids a chance than to go with a veteran whose career may be over.

It is a Gary Gaetti move, however wouldn't someone block Edmonds because the Cubs are in first place and have a better record. Also, why I don't mean to ruin the fun, but wouldn't the Cardinals grab him? Would he be loyal if he went back to the Cardinals even though Ankiel is now in center field.

I don't like the idea, but if they decide to do it, here would be my rules for him staying on the team.
You have a week's probation. If you don't hit in that week or if you botch a bunch of easy plays, Hit the road.
I agree they need a left handed batter, just not this Cardinal hasbeen.

Not a bad idea, though. If they moved to Indiana, they would get all the attention and they wouldn't have that chip on their shoulder about being the second team in Chicago.
