Determining whether he needs to be replaced and, if so, who would replace him, although bench coach Jerry Manuel seems an obvious choice.

I wish Willie and Omar would stop saying, We Are Only in May.

Pretty soon it’s going to be:
We are Only in June
We are Only in July
It is Only August
It is Only September

And finally, there are ONLY 6 months to Opening Day 2009

Get rid of ONLY and do it NOW!

David Lennon goes out of his way to defend Omar Minaya in acquiring Johan Santana, Ryan Church and Brian Schneider. Other than the latter, I agree with the wisdom of those moves. But Lennon DOESN'T cite resigning Luis Castillo, Moises Alou and Orlando Hernandez nor does he cite the glaring omission of not acquiring a Tony Clark or a Matt Stairs as a pinch-hitter, but more importantly, a contingency against an aging slugger coming off his worst year as well as surgery as well as chronic health problems, Carlos Delgago.
--
Furthermore, Lennon doesn't mention the linguistic and racial element to this mix, either. But then again, no one seems to lest they seem racist. However, I don't think it's bigoted to think that if the Minaya is going to clearly go out of his way tostaff the roster with two-thirds Spanish-speaking players, then maybe they should have gotten a Spanish-speaking manager. Failing that, there should be a greater linguistic and cultural barrier than just sticking the GM's Latino spy, Tony Bernazard, into the clubhouse where he goes around asking players in Spanish what's wrong with Randolph while No Hablo Willie's standing right there.
--
And it's odd, but 2/3 of the team is Latino yet the four best seasons so far belong to 1. Ryan Church 2. John Maine 3. David Wright 4. Billy Wagner. Is there something telling about that?

Minaya did a mostly good job in strengthening the team over the winter although the 4 year contract to Castillo can be questioned. But one thing he didn't do was to find a good coach to augment Randolph. Joe Torre uses Larry Bowa to be his "enforcer" to let players know when they aren't doing well. This enables Torre to play the good quiet cop. Since Minaya doesn't let Randolph choose his coaches it was his job to find someone to let players know when they aren't playing well. The Mets also don't have any self-starters like Jimmy Rollins. You heard nothing from them when Rollins and Vittorino were injured yet they kept pace with the Mets. Davidoff is right..the next three weeks will be very crucial

Actually, they play with little respect for themselves. Why do grown men need a babysitter or someone to scold them when they play like chumps? I know Randolph will be the one to go if they don't improve, but all the talk about how he should flip over tables and scream at his loafing players as if this would magically change their play, is absurd.

Good post, Ed. Maybe instead of a team psychologist, the Mets should hire a sociologist. Only the players would know this for sure, but if this team is truly composed of different cultural factions, it obviously can have an alienating effect on individual players. And when you feel that disconnect, you begin to feel and play like the Mets. Who really knows? Was Wagner, in his own indelicate way, trying to expose this situation? And if player detachment (read: indifference) is a factor in their poor play, how is it fixed? Answer: By winning. Winning cures all ills and transcends all differences. The problem is, the Mets don't really have the talent to pull it off. They can't win enough.

To bad Randolph doesn't show some of the backbone and intensity that he portrayed yesterday with Mike and the Mad Dog on the field. A little disingenous for him to say that the fans and the media don't know what they're talking about when we've watched him for years and his style belies his words.Be a man Willie, admit your mistakes, correct them if you can, leave if you can't and do what you say you always do, Hold you head high.

For once I agree to an extent with Davidoff. By the three week period the Mets could possibly out of any contention. Willie is not going to change anything, just read his comments. He turns a blind eye to what the veteran players do wrong and gets all over the younger ones. Willie has no control over this team and the longer he stays the deeper the rut.

Anyone notice how almost all of the Latest Yankees Headlines in today's Newsday is about the Mets? It's shameful how one person can use such a reputable newspaper for his/her own personal interests and vendettas. How can Newsday let this person get away with such cheap nonsense? Newsdays sports section needs a serious overhaul and I'm hoping the Dolans will turn it into a serious sensible source for readers to find objective unbiased sports reporting...with common sense formatting...just the way a reputable paper should conduct its business.

Get rid of Wille, Ho-Jo, and Peterson. Why does Peterson always run out to the mound instead of eating up precious seconds while the bullpen gets ready. Little things like this seem to be un noticed. Ho-Jo although once a great player has done zilch as a hitting instructor. Reyes has totally gone down hill, Wright cant hit a fastball off a right-hander

"Always tough Colorado"? Has Ken Davidoff seen the standings lately? Colorado is 15-27 , 12 1/2 games back of Arizona, and they've lost 10 out of their last 12 games. The games against Atlanta will be much tougher than Colorado. Besides, no one is running away with anything in any of the six divisions and it's still May!!

EVERYBODY CALM THE F*****K DOWN!!!!!!!!!

thank you

I'm the guy who judged you all clueless.

I like this new judging system....

But anyway, if they fire Willie (which they should've done last year), who's going to replace him??? Jerry Manuel is NOT the answer there, I'll tell you that right now.

It all begins and ends with Reyes. He's the engine that drives this team. If he can get going, they'll be in much better shape. The "if," however, remains mystifying.

You're right. And, since July 1st he's hitting .250.'Nuff said? How has the team been since then?

That speaks volumes. All the stats showing how the team does when Reyes is "on" don't lie. I still believe in Reyes and his talent--just can't figure out what the problem is.

"Santana's arrival also benefited the Mets by turning the conversation away from The Collapse."

There is no evidence that the Mets - a continuing study in mediocrity -- have benefited this season from Santana's arrival. Unless, based on the marketing and hyping of this team to fans in the off-season, Mets' advance ticket sales receipts are counted.

The noose for "Comatose Willie" has been dropped. Within a month he should be history. Nothing will change Minaya will still be running the show. Tony Bernazard and Sandy Johnson will still "back stab" the new manager, unless they have a say in the choice. "Freddie and The Dreamers" perpetuate the charade they want to win, by signing free agents utilizing the "quick fix" approach to the maximum. The Mets player development under Minaya is horrific with the exception of Reyes and Wright. The Red Sox, Angels D'backs all produce home grown talent. Indeed, the Red Sox have two rings in four years. The Mets need a total overhaul in the organization. Player development should be a priority and not an afterthought. Jeff Wilpon needs to cease injecting himself into the baseball side of the organization. Will it Happen? Unlikely, but until it does 1986 will be the last championship for the Mets for awhile.

You're right about the lazy play, but if Willie yelled and shattered water coolers, I wonder if the guys would just say "Que?" and pretend they don't understand Ingles.

Willie's toast. These guys aren't a team. The Yankees and the Red Sox at least have some fight in 'em.
