Full story: Chicago Tribune

I'm going on staycation this week, but soon after returning from tending my tomatoes and taking afternoon naps, I'll be cooking Kass' Beer Can Chicken for 100 lucky loyal Tribune subscribers, and we'll drink beer and talk politics and anything else.

What a great deal from the Society of the PLMSRCS food, beer and John Kass. It is almost worthwhile enough to fly up and attend. I suppose the attendees will be watchful for cameras and DUI arrests afterward. Have fun!

Beer Can Chicken.
Beer Can Chicken.

Can someone explain two things to me?

First, what the h@ll is beer can chicken? Do they put the whole chicken in the can? I can't get it to fit. Does it have to be a beer can? Couldn't I use the Diet Fresca cans I already have? Does it have anything to do with secret herbs and spices?

Second, could someone explain why, after 20 years as our beloved little mayor, Daley still even needs an inspector to generally promote honesty in government? Isn't that what the mayor was supposed to do?

(Maybe if I took the bones out of the chicken it would fit. I don't think the Colonel goes through this at his place.)

Has anyone yet compared Chicago's Olympic effort to the Obama Stimulus package? From where I sit they both seem about as beneficial and are motivated more by the need for political payoffs than helping average citizens.

John,
You should add the knowledgeable Federal Judge Anderson who lifted the Shakman decree to give the city a chance to perform without supervision. After Mayor Daley’s former patronage chief Sorich being indicted and subsequently convicted of hiring violations. Anyway another great column and revelation of the "city that works"!

Thanks again Mr. Kass for telling it like it is. Now, if only more people were intelligent enough to listen to you:)

As to the first, you have the chicken sit on the beer can, with the can up its cavity. Also half the can of beer has to be emptied first, supposedly because otherwise it would explode. Kass accomplishes that by drinking the beer. All of this has been explained in his past columns.

Fresca would not work because of all the artificial sweeteners. Barbecue shows say never use diet drinks when grilling meat. However, they do say that a can of pineapple or cranberry juice would work just fine.

The answer to your second question is inexplicable.

Second City Flop is a Chicago Hater with likely connections to the Will/Kendall GOP crowd. SCF's politics are right of Mussilini's.

Somebody's gotta do an underground chalkie. Sell 'em on the street corners. Why not sell 'em out of squad cars on the sly. Of course that would be wrong. But if somebody did, selling to those who are interested, it could be even bigger than that Amazon.com eagle t-shirt from a few weeks back. I'd sign up for a few.

With all the other problems in Chicago, why do we have a mayor flying around the world to continue to beg an absurd, money-grubbing Olympics committee to have their games here. If you think the cops are overworked and the highways are crowded now.....

Ah, the ever popular Attack of the Right Wing.

SCC is a Chicago-phile, well versed in the art of bare knuckle politics just like Kass. A patriot to the nth degree, they advocate smaller government, tax cuts, personal responsibility and more tools for the police to do their jobs. They are unabashedly pro Second Amendment, yet socially liberal. The only one with an axe to grind appears to be you.

Part of the likely Olympic cost overruns will be from curtailing crime, upgrading roads and public transit and developing an information tracking system that would allow anyone to scrutinize Olympic costs and contracts instantly. But we wouldn't want that, would we? It's so much better to complain how everything stays the same.

Daley is going most certifiably bonkers. As the circling federal vultures continue to pick at his fiefdom and devour one after another of his clan of thieves, he continues to rant about how the Olympics will be the magic potion that will save Chicago from economic doom.

He lied about the parking meter fiasco, he lied about the deal in Lausanne. He is not to be trusted with anything, much less his involvement with the Olympic bid. The natives are angry and restless, and no amount of cheerleading from his propaganda committee should be believed or tolerated.

It is a true shame that a world class city like Chicago should be denied it's chance at the Olympics because of a bunch of greedy, hack politicians who think they are kings and rule with impunity but require constant monitoring from Federal agencies to play by the rules.

I hope David Hoffman can do a number with this John Harris character- this is gonna be a very bad nightmare for Daley.
