Roberts hints at timeline for contract talks

Brian Roberts will be a very tough decision for McPhail. I think that if we were going to trade him we missed our chance. The Cubs were offering us Colvin and two of Ceda, Gallegher, and Veal. These reports were confirmed by Jim Hendry after spring training. Now that most of the interest has diminished I think that we should see what we can get for him. We have to at least guage his value first. I think McPhail will decide to try and re-sign him if we find no value.

I think they will resign him.

I am actually for signing B-Rob if it is around 10 or 11 mil. He is 30 but if it is a three or four year extension that would go with me. For the off-season I would sign Roberts and Markakis for similar contracts and buy out Jones arbitration.

They will have a hard time signing Roberts. I think 10-11 million is too little of what he will ask, I think it will take 15 miilion at the least to sign him. If they don't sign him then I can't see Tex coming here. If 1 signs then I can see the other signing but I won't hold my breath on it.

At this point, the offers will not be there because he is a rental. It's too late to trade him for this year's post-season, as he would never make it through waivers.
There is no choice but to re-sign him, and he's probably worth it anyway. $10M/5 should easily get it done. |

Wow , 66 1/27 seasons!
Who knew? |

I agree Bud. He should be in the hall of fame for playing that long.
Interestingly, 66 and 1/27 seasons breaks down to 66 seasons and 6 games. I think that there's some kind of message hidden in there. Are there things that we don't know about the Sun or Juan Samuel? |

I hope the O's brass doesn't d*ck around and then come in with some low ball offer after the 2009 season and say "oh, well we tried to keep him here and he didn't want to" a la Mike Mussina.
I'd say sign him to a 4-year extension -- at most. He's going to continue to be productive for a few more years barring injury and he is the catalyst for the O's lineup. At his age though, anything longer would be too much of a risk in my opinion. Is there anyone out there who would support a 35/36 year old second baseman making $10-14M / year? Not me! 4 year extension max. |

sign him for 4 years @ 8 million if not trade him for young talent...we are rebuilding so we should save our
$$$'s to sign comers.. |

Trading Roberts was never a good idea. I believe that 1/27 of a season is what some of the O's have been playing every year this past decade. :) But, hey, journalism majors don't have to take math.

And is there anyone out there supporting a 38 year old Tex by the time his contracts up. Oh Yeah everybody is for him because he was born and raised here. So we can't pay Roberts because he will get old so why does everyone seem to exempt Tex from the aging process. It happens to almost every baseball player wrether their on steriods or not. You can't tell me by the end of a 10 year contract when Tex is 38 or 29 he will still hit 35 HR and drive in 120 RBI's a year. The likelyhood of that is slim to none.

I love the "risk losing him as a free agent and getting nothing but draft picks in return" in the article. 58% of the players on this year's all-star team were 1st or 2nd round picks. I think it might be a good idea to keep Roberts around if he's a Type A free agent next year. I'll take an additional 2 picks in the first two rounds any day.
