Cubs use Zambrano, offensive explosion to down Padres

Despite one of the chilliest springs in a couple of decades, the confines have seldom been friendlier to the Cubs than they've been during the first seven weeks of the 2008 season.

Anyone check this out from the game notes:
"Former Cubs’ pitcher Mark Prior, now with the Padres, had a setback in his rehab from shoulder surgery in April 2007. When he felt discomfort in his shoulder at extended spring training in Arizona, he was sent back to San Diego for an MRI, manager Bud Black said. Prior might visit Dr. James Andrews, who performed the surgery, to be checked out."

Not that I wish for Prior to be permanently doomed to rehab, but at least this is now a weight off of our shoulders. And, shows why Hendry wasn't willing to give him just a 1 year deal with no option - there wouldn't have been much upside for the Cubs. If this were almost any other pitcher, he'd be out of baseball by now.

It's nice to be 4-0 on this homestand, and encouraging to see what this team can do when they've got the other pitcher on the ropes. Some might think, "Oh yeah, it's only San Diego," but the Cubs have stumbled against teams they "should have beaten," and a good team is one that actually beats the teams they're "supposed" to beat (though we all know that, unlike with football, on any given day any team could beat any other team.) So today it's good. Let's hope Marquis locates well tomorrow.

Amazing how many "Six Run Innings" the Cubs have had this year! I'll bet they have 15 of them. I know they lead all of Major League Baseball in that category.

Seems like they had less than 5 in ALL of 2006 under Dusted.

I live down here in St. Louis (still bleed Cubbie blue). It was interesting watching the Cards fans leave the game last Sunday talking about having a 1.5 game lead. They acted like the division was in the bag. I calmly told them it was a 162 game season, not 40 games. Where are they now? No closer, no hitting, a whiny catcher. Cards SUCK! Go Cubbies!

My daughter and I were there last night. The reports of cold are slightly understated. It was COLD. But a Cub's victory can thaw anything.
Go Cub's!!!

Gotta love the explosiveness of this team. There's no way the Cardinals can contain them, the Brewers to catch them, or the SUX to match them.

I can't believe the Cubs are going to sign Jim Edmonds and not me. What, they think I can't still hit even though I got shot all those years ago?

Though I've been known to knock back a beer or two in the Friendly Confines, last night wasn't a night for beer, but, one for hot chocolate. With the wind coming in from the east / the lake over right-center field it was...cold in the Friendly Confines and certainly not Padre weather <grin>. However, the runs put up on the board by the Cubs in the 5th and 6th innings were real heart-warmers for we north-siders.
The state has no business buying Wrigley Field! Landmark the building, limit the...damage new owners could do, but, the state {and city} need to keep their hands of Wrigely and their hands out of our pockets.
Go Cubs and 2 hell with Zell.

I agree, I don't see how Edmonds could help the Cubs at all. Pie is a good enough backup for Johnson, he just needs to work on his hitting. He's a defensive gem.

If the Cubs could use ANYONE from SD it would be Maddux.

Marc (ihatesorianodotcom) must have been crushed when Soriano didn't strike out on that intentional walk.

Jim Edmonds is a really handsome man, a great defensive outfielder, but he's spotty offensively—a pure guess hitter, so he strikes out a lot. I'd like to see the Cubs take a pass on Mr. Edmonds.
