I got his autograph last month when The Tides played at Durham. He was the only player that went out of his way to give me his signature. I got Tyke Redman's too, but I had to ask. When Mr. Mickolio saw me standing there with a pen and paper, he went right up to me and signed, without a prompt. I don't know how well he'll pitch up here, but there couldn't be a nicer guy.

The O's must be making it a point to stick it to the Mariners every chance they get.

Sure seems like it. The Astros are feeling the heat as well. Hopefully this offseason will be as good as the last.

Yeah isnt it amazing that some players actually care about the fans? You really dont see many players these days signing on their own. I miss the days when Ripken used to stay 1-2 hours past the game to sign, especially on his fairwell tour. Classy baseball guy.

I remember in 1977 at Yankee Stadium, Ken Singleton was signing autographs for half an hour before the game. I guess there are some athletes that "get it," that they are doubly priviledged: One, because they play baseball for a living, and two because they get lots of monet to do so.

Isn't there anyone else we can bring up besides Burres? What happened to Bergeson or another guy with some promise. Burres is old news.

Yah, I'm sure Francona is real shook up about the situation. The All-Star game is a joke anymore.

I hear what you're saying, but the way things have gone with Safarte starting, I'd rather have Burres. Not long term, just for now. At least Burress had a few good starts earlier in the year, and he did tally 7 wins (with a lot of offensive help).

I'm not down on Safarte, because I think he is a good relief pitcher (he's not Jimmy Johnson, but who is?). He's a pretty good reliever. I guess that just for a few starts, Burress would be the lesser of two evils. Although I know that you have a much more extensive knowledge of our farm system, so take what I suggest with a grain of salt.

Shoulda traded Sherrill. After all-star game performance, his stock was as high as it was ever gonna be. Now hes on DL, which was inevitable. Andy blew it.

Too bad; guess you don't know everything. O's win, Sarfate gave up no runs. Sorry to disappoint you. Get a life.

Francona's response to Sherrill's injury shows a lot of class. The All-Star game was a month ago, and GS pitched in several games following his extended outing against the National League.

Anyone with even a limited knowledge of statistics could see that Sherrill was on track to be WAY over his season pitch total by year's end. His designation to the disabled list was a by-product of his use time-after-time in pretty much every close game the Orioles played during the first half of the season.

The fact that Francona feels a personal obligation to reach out to the O's and Sherrill makes me once again wish that Boston fans have even a fraction of the class their team and organization has.

Think about it: The Red Sox dumped Manny Ramirez, arguably their best player and the driving force behind their two titles, because he became a disrespectful diva toward the team and the club's long-time employees. To me, that shows the TEAM is more important than any individual. To part ways with such an integral cog in their successful machine means that the organization places the TEAM first. And the Sox end up with Jason Bey, who is kickin' arse in place of "Manny Being Manny."

If only their obnoxious, crude "fans" had as much class as Francona and the organization, I might actually root for them.

Sherrill isn't on the DL because of the All-Star game....he immediately saved a few games and looked good doing it for weeks afterward. That Francona feels a professional responsibility from extending GS during the AS game is a rare moment in sports that illustrates how there are some people in the business that respect their opponents, and the game itself.

Terry Francona, my hat is tipped. You certainly deserve it.

Agree, should have sold high on Sherill. I'd love to know what McPhail turned down for him.
