PETA wants Eight Belles jockey suspended

“If he didn't then we can probably blame the fact that they're allowed to whip the horses mercilessly.”

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is seeking the suspension of Eight Belles' jockey after the filly had to be euthanized following her second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. via WTVG

..if then, we should arrest "ALL" the ticket holders to that event. those horses are bred to run, it's in their blood, the jockey is paid to encourage the horse and "talk" to him...

peta people are nuts. they protest about a chimp in a nissan ad, but don't protest about an orangutan in an aflac commercial. and the orangutan is more endangered than the chimp. they won't let you post to their website if you disagree with their view point. they get has-been actresses to pose nude, so they are just like playboy, etc. they actually posted that "fish are intelligent, you can see it just by looking into their eyes". total losers at that organization.

PETA KILLED MORE ANIMALS IN THE LAST 5 YEARS than all of the racehorses that had to be put down in the last 50 years-they are the mass destroyers of animals -visit here and see how kind and gentle they are.

7 Things You Didn't Know About PETA

1) PETA president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk has described her group’s overall goal as “total animal liberation.” This means no meat, no milk, no zoos, no circuses, no wool, no leather, no hunting, no fishing, and no pets (not even seeing-eye dogs). PETA is also against all medical research that requires the use of animals.
2) Despite its constant moralizing about the “unethical” treatment of animals by restaurant owners, grocers, farmers, scientists, anglers, and countless other Americans, PETA has killed over 14,400 dogs and cats at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. During 2005, PETA put to death over 90 percent of the animals it collected from members of the public.
3) PETA has given tens of thousands of dollars to convicted arsonists and other violent criminals. This includes a 2001 donation of $1,500 to the North American Earth Liberation Front (ELF), an FBI-certified “domestic terrorist” group responsible for dozens of firebombs and death threats. During the 1990s, PETA paid $70,200 to an Animal Liberation Front (ALF) activist convicted of burning down a Michigan State University research laboratory. In his sentencing recommendation, a federal prosecutor implicated PETA president Ingrid Newkirk in that crime. And PETA vegetarian campaign coordinator Bruce Friedrich told an animal rights convention in 2001 that “blowing stuff up and smashing windows” is “a great way to bring about animal liberation.”
4) PETA activists regularly target children as young as six years old with anti-meat and anti-milk propaganda, often waiting outside their schools to intercept them as they walk to and from class-without notifying parents. One piece of kid-targeted PETA literature tells small children:“Your Mommy Kills Animals!” PETA brags that its messages reach over 2 million children every year, including thousands reached by e-mail without the permission of their parents. One PETA vice president told the Fox News Channel’s audience:“Our campaigns are always geared towards children, and they always will be.”
5) PETA has used a related organization, the PETA Foundation, to fund the misnamed Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a deceptive animal rights group that promotes itself as an unbiased source of medical and nutritional information. PCRM's president also serves as president of the PETA Foundation.
6) PETA runs campaigns seemingly calculated to offend religious believers. One entire PETA website is devoted to the claim-despite ample evidence to the contrary-that Jesus Christ was a vegetarian. PETA holds protests at houses of worship, even suing one church that tried to protect its members from Sunday-morning harassment. Its billboards taunt Christians with the message that hogs “died for their sins.” PETA insists, contrary to centuries of rabbinical teaching, that the Jewish ritual of kosher slaughter shouldn't be allowed. And its infamous “Holocaust on Your Plate” campaign crassly compares the Jewish victims of Nazi genocide with farm animals.
7) PETA has repeatedly attacked research foundations like the March of Dimes, the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and the American Cancer Society, because they support animal-based research that might uncover cures for birth defects and life-threatening diseases. PETA president Ingrid Newkirk has said that “even if animal research resulted in a cure for AIDS, we would be against it.”

peta smeata! Hey PETA, how 'bout focusing your attention on the ethical treatment of people first! These wacko fringe groups would rather save an animal than a human being when you get right down to it. PETA should be banned!

What was it like for Eight Belles???
Richard M wrote:
Then, she collapsed and broke her ankles.... It is fair to believe she fainted.... There was nothing else left for her to gain strength to even cool down. It is a lesson for everyone to see a bigger picture than only what you want to see...The Law or Relativity!!
Nope - she did not "faint" instead she made several attempts to stand on her flailing snapped limbs, pushing the bones through the skin, grinding dirt into the open, bleeding stumps with the rest of the legs dangling by the sides.

Finally, a couple of out-riders grabbed her and pushed her down. She was still flailing her hopelessly broken legs.

Finally someone administered a fatal injection of what industry people call "the pink cocktail" (because it's a pinkish color in the syringe.)

Her dead carcass was dragged off the track into a van and carted away.

I am sure that her connections blubbered about "their loss" ... boo-boo-hooing about the sad state of affairs.

Let's ask if Equipoise had been injected into the filly ... or some other brand of steroids. Every day, horses are forced to get injected with steroids and painkillers and diuretics - the diuretics if they need them or not - because God Forbid - SOMEONE may have the edge on you by juicing THEIR horses - so let's shoot them up, because everyone else is doing it!

The owner may have lost his perspective by getting caught up in the excitement that he had a filly in the Kentucky Derby. WooHoo - maybe Eight Belles will be filly winner No. 4!

Push ... Push ... PUSH

Everyone got caught up with the stupid Kentucky Derby.

Push that filly with her big body and her genetically weak ankles.

Then ... when she's running way past the finish line with the jockey struggling to stop her .... snap snap - grinding those stumps-for-front-legs into the dirt. She didn't know what happened, she's in pain and her instinct is to run ... but all that happens is that her legs keep flopping to the sides. She cannot escape the pain. She is frightened. Men run to her and tackle her to the ground. She feels the needle stick ... and then she falls into a deep sleep until her heart stops beating.

What a wonderful sport of kings!

Eight Belles was doomed by her pedigree

Raise A Native (aka RAN) was a quarter-horse bodied big horse who threw blazing-fast progeny with a propensity for weak ankles.

If the instance of RAN appeared once in the pedigree, it didn't seem to really threaten the offspring.

But during his reign at stud, Mr. Prospector (by RAN) was bred to hundreds and hundreds of mares. RAN himself being a popular sire, had numerous sons and daughters.

Within a few years, we started seeing doubling of RAN in pedigrees and horses breaking down with weak ankles.

Fast forward to the 2008 Kentucky Derby, and Eight Belles runs her heart out with a TRIPLE OCCURRENCE of RAN in the pedigree.

Is it any wonder that we saw her two ankles snap like toothpicks?

Poor thing.

Stupid, stupid breeders, owners, and trainers!

This "sport" should be BANNED!

It's an awful, awful business (horse racing)- not for the Cigars of the world, but the little claimers at cheap tracks. Read about some of the horse rescues. Read about horse slaughter. Most of these are ex-racers.

Like I said earlier about that world-class trainer who almost won the TC - it's not how he treats his superstars - it's how he treats his cheap claimers.

It will make you sick.

It's as bad as dog-fighting.

Open your eyes.

Remember 1986 Kentucky Derby winner Ferdinand? Life of Riley, right? Wrong ... he ended up on someone's plate with a side a Fava Beans and a nice Chianti. And THAT was a Derby winner. Kept in a crowded filthy pen, jammed together with a ton of other horses, loaded into a huge truck, crowded conditions, fear, brutality, no one cares ...just load them up and ship them to their final destination. When they stop, the horses are unloaded and forced to walk up a narrow ramp. They are herd animals, and they want to pack, but they cannot. At the top of the ramp, they smell the blood, feces and urine, and they panic. They get a blow to the head which may or may not kill them. They are strung up by their hind legs and their throats are cut. They may be alive as they are sent to a conveyor belt to be gutted and cleaned for the meat. That is the fate that Derby winner Ferdinand experienced.

Mmmmmmmm ... dinner.

And you think it's better for a cheap claimer? It only gets much much worse for these horses.

Oh PLEASE!

this is why I don't believe in PETA, they will overlook certain things like everyone else they are being paid to look another way they have been riding poor horses to death for years, I wonder how many have died before they would do something or investigate?
Also not only the owner or the jockey all of them need to fess up because that is utterly rediculous to ride and animal until he breaks both legs!!!PRICELESS

As a former rider myself it's a said story but PETA has no idea what they are talking about. If there is ever an indication that the horse has an issuie they don't race. They are worth way more alive.

PETA estimates that 800 thoroughbreds die each year in North America because of injuries

Lets check the score PETA has killed 17,400 animals in the last 8 1/2 years. Avg 2,100+ per year.

hey if you care and want to help animals be informed Norfolks other shelter has a very good placement rate as does the city shelter-peta has a 97% kill rate -not on just strays but on cats and dogs that people give them for placement.
PETA is Corrupt top to bottom .
not one dime for peta-give all you can afford to your local shelter-you won't regreat it -a dime to PETA is another dog dead.
they exist only to further their agenda take a moment and find out what that is.

I don't know about PETAs accusations as I only watch horse racing around Derby time. I do know that watching the horses run through the field, without jockeys is a beautiful and amazing site to see.

One of my friends is a veterinarian and after Barbaro's accident she said that the horses were being bred for speed over health and strength. She said it was a shame what was being done to them in terms of bloodlines.

Churchill Downs is pretty powerful around here. After Barbaro there were calls for the safer racing track but the Downs said it wasn't necessary. Churchill Downs does not and will not hesitate to use it's tradition and status as a major tourist attraction to muscle local and state lawmakers to get their way.

Recently they were even able to muscle their way into an exemption from a city-wide smoking ban. Fortunately local bar and restaurant owners sued and a judge struck the exemption down. I don't know ho easy it will be to get Churchill to make changes it doesn't want to make.

It's easy to get caught up in the parties and traditions of the Derby, but first Barbaro and now Eight Belles. I heard that the rowdy infield crowd went silent in disbelief when she went down. I cried. I try to re-watch the footage and see if it looked like she was in pain, but I can't tell. Barbaro's jockey pulled him out of the race when he was injured. It's not easy to stop a horse in full gallop. I don't know what happened here. I hate to think that she was in so much pain that even keeping her alive to try and save her would have been cruel.
