Please, please do not give Waters another start. It would be better to pluck someone off the pitching staff at Gulf Coast where the Oriole farm team has a record of 14-35. This guy Waters throws meatballs.

It's really funny to me that someone proved me WRONG by showing that the O's have produced ONE PLAYER over two years.

OK, the farm system obviously is doing a great job. They produced one player.

A middle reliever.

Funny you mention that team because it was how that team was built that helped to cause the last 11 years of ineptitude. That team was composed of primarily veteran free agents and trades at the expense of the farm system. We haven't made a true effort to rebuild it since then with Angelos opting for one or two bad veteran signings a year to try to keep the interest of the fans. We aren't going to spend the money the Yanks and Red Sox do because we don't have their market. Maybe they can afford to pour money into free agents year after year but we can't. I suggest that you move to NY or Boston if this is what you want. To me it's much more satisfying seeing a group of young players come up together that will be good and affordable for several years so the team can be in contention for several years. I'm jealous of what they have in Tampa right now because they should be set for at least the next 5 years.
This post says it all, that 96-97 team wasn't built to last. Even the GM Gillick saw the writing on the wall and thought that team should have been blown up in 96'. That Angelos overruled him and we had a brief two year run was probably a bad thing, Angelos from then on decided he was smarter than the baseball people. When Wren wanted to change course after 97' Pete brought in Belle and Wren was soon fired. We should have done in 98' what Macphail started to do last year. It is sad about ten lost years but they are gone and we obviously can't stand toe to toe with the evils financially so to build with youth is our only option. This will take some time and patience though, like Jamie Walker said last year, I cant believe this team has lost for ten years and there is so little talent to call upon from the minors. The pipeline shouldn't be in such sad shape but in time with better drafting and not losing picks to free agency things will turn around and its already starting to..

I'm not a big fan of Waters stuff either, but the guy is 2-0 with a better ERA than Cabrera. I guess we should replace Cabrera also with one of the countless ML-ready pitchers in the minors.

Give the guy a break. He's finally getting a shot after 9 years and he has earned the opportunity to start because there's no one capable behind him.

I never cease to be amazed by how dishonest you have to be to support the Orioles.

Markakis plays an entire year for the 2006 Orioles and some "fan" tries to tell me that it doesn't count, somehow.

2006 was Nick's first FULL YEAR because he played a FULL YEAR on the team. He appeared in 147 games and had over 500 PA's.

Well, they're building for last right now.

And that's exactly where they are....LAST.

And yes, it's a sad state of affairs that he's "earned" the opportunity to start because of the lack of quality starters in the minors.

Where are all of the Mora haters gone? You know, the ones calling for his outright release before the All-Star break? C'mon, lay into him! Why, he's not even batting .300. His HR and RBI totals are misleading, right? He's only doing well now becasue he has so much protection in this fearsome lineup from the likes of Millar and Hernandez, correct?

Keep mashin''em Melvin. This team is FUN to watch.

Look at you dropping the O's knowledge. You're a fan, admit it. Sure you felt used and abused over the last decade as the team steadily decayed thanks to the active management style of Angel-loss.

It's okay to hope again, little buddy. You can come home now. Home to Camden Yards.

Of course, if Angelos sticks his nose in things again and alters the path things are on now, all bets are off and I will join you as a basher.

We love Melvin. It's just that I would rather have had two first round draft picks for him (as compensation for losing him to free agency) rather than spend 24 million on him when in reality we were going nowhere during his contract tenure. I am amazed at his resurgence though and will continue to hope he keeps it up, maybe he will reamin a Type A free agent and we can still get two top picks in 2010 for him. Would we be even worse without Melvin in the short run, sure, but degrees of last place don't matter to me.

Yes, I've been proven wrong.

See, the O's minor league system IS producing talent. They produced one guy in two years.

At this pace, everything should be OK by.....ummm.....

In 2010 we'll find out whether Ghost correctly states that this team is and will be mired in last place under Andy McPhail for the McPhail years. I suggest we all mark the date and gather to praise Ghost Caesar or condemn him mid-2010 season.

I am not going to sit here and speculate on what is right or wrong within the organization or if they are going in the right direction or not, but I thoroughly enjoy watching these guys play much more than the past 10 years...totally different attitude and chemistry

Ghost you are absolutely right in that they are in last place, but we also play in the toughest division in baseball, meaning lots of games against Rays, Sox, and Yankees and are still only 4 games under .500. I will be honest at the beginning of the year I thought 60 wins would be a stretch to get to with the rebuilding and I was ok with that, as long as we started to truly rebuild...so the O's have definitely exceeded my expectations this year and hopefully going forward.

As for ghost, he is just a negative person that is on here looking for reaction and trying to cause a stir, he doesn't make too much sense.

Other posters like Mr. Baseball, veedub, go o's, hermitage, and others make great points and I enjoy the incite.

The Orioles not only lack bench depth they lack organizational depth. Glad to see they were not swept.
