The article was right in the fact that the phillies are a better team then us they have a better bullpen better middle infield and with all the mets faults this year we still fought them till then end of the season there was no reason why the phillies should not have clinched the division the first or second week of sept. i do disagree that we are far off from being a dominant team and being the best in the east. All we really have to do is rework our bullpen bring in another starter and get consistancy and we will be the best. I think a full season with manuel will help and now its omars job to earn his money but this team is better then they showed and hopefully jerry manuel can bring it out of them

If you truly think this team is better then the Phillies then you are extremely ignorant and arrogant and have completely fit the profile of this article. The Mets need to make improvements with youth, not with old washed up Montreal Expos. How many years do the Mets need to make that mistake over and over before they get it! They just did it again as early as last year with Castillo and they will probably effin do it again this year with Delgado. My you make a lot of judgements for someone that doesn't know me from adam. Look, we won the season series from Philly. So pretending they are some how by far and away better than us is a pipedream. They have a better pen. Look at Bill James' stats...if the mets convert even HALF of the saves they blew they beat the vaunted phillies out by 10 games. This team is far from perfect. They need more in the way of leadership and less selfish ball players. but in and of itself, the core of this team is darn good. If you were truly a "realist" you'd know that. As it is, you're a Wally Matthews disciple...which leaves you about as far from the truth as you could possibly be. Wally, and his fellow realists...get a clue.

Wallace is 100% right. The Mets do think they are better than they are & it's been a problem since the 2006 NLCS. They must let Delgado go & bring in some new blood to this team.
If you bring Delgado back, then you assure yourself of another September collapse.
The problem IS NOT delgado. However, it is clear as day that this group of players will not get it done. So bring in a new leader. it only makes sense.

I am a Mets fan but watching them for the past few seasons I have to agree with you. The problem is with the Mets management. Two 'Must Do' steps - 1 - fire the scouting staff and 2 - do not hire any over the hill players (Delgado included)

right on...simple... the mets were not the best team....and that is why they are doing whatever it is that the losing teams players do....

Ya Gotta Believe very well put. Phillies are playing good ball right now, but to think they are far and away that much better is ridiculous. They had EVERYTHING go right this year injury and bullpen wise, while the Mets dealt with major injuries to key guys and the difference was 3 games. Not making excuses either cause the Phillies deserved it, but all this BS about no heart is exactly that BS. Mets won a BUNCH of games this year with HUGE comebacks, so don't talk to me about no heart. Talk to me about NO closer and no setup guy and no setup to the setup to the setup guy etc. That makes the team bad yes, but it is fact. Fix the pen, have a relatively injury free season, and the division is right there.

The season has been over for the Mets for 2 weeks now. The only reason to write this column was to rub it in our faces again...Matthews can't get enough of it.

Nice stretch. The fact is the Mets bullpen stunk. All your nonsense about them thinking they are better than other teams is what you want from your players. Do you want them to tell us we are not good enough. How redicoulous. Don't you have something more constructive to write.

As usual, a fact filled report without any overstatements or mistakes. It is too bad that we, the general public, have been robbed of Wallace Mathews' incredible insight now that he has been arrested for molesting a collie and four beagles.
Don't drop the soap Wallace.

Old Time Mets fan, Reyes was right there the last week of the season, Wright struggled for sure. BUT, the bottom line is you HAVE to be able to win games 2-1 or 1-0. ALL season long the Mets COULDN'T do that . The offense can't be on everyday trying to outscore the pen. They got away with it for a good while, but crunch time came and it caught up to them. They scored 799 runs while playing in a pitcher's park, same as the BIG BAD PHILLIES playing at CB park. The very last game is a perfect example of games that the Mets needed to win this year and couldn't. 2-2 tie, the pen HAS to step up and hold it, but nooooooooo they couldn't do that. The offense did their job this year. the pen didn't. Stevie Wonder can see that.

Anyway, blowing up the core of this team would be stupid. Blowing up the bullpen would be smart. Keep Smitty, perhaps Feliciano and maybe Sanchez and try to dump the rest (I think Heilman should get a shot at starting, if nothing else that would increase his trade value) Get another starter to compliment Santana, Pelf, and Maine, and let the kids fight it out for the 5 spot. Learning to hit in the clutch more and playing small ball is on Jerry. He's talked a good game so far, let's see if he really does it. If they can get a gritty guy that's been there before then do it. Not sure who's available though...I will concede the Phils seem to have THAT guy (Victorino/Werth) while the Mets don't....yet anyway.

Watch the NLCS and learn what the word TEAM means. Watch the Phillies pick each other up and a different player become a hero everynight. I neve read and other articles by this guy Wallace, but he seems to be very blunt and to the point and not afraid to write the TRUTH. Your team has a long way to go. I would clean house and get rid of some of those primadonna clowns.(Reyes, Wright,Wagner ect). Good luck!! Please enjoy the show, as the Phillies TEAM goes to the World Series ! <quoted text> Yeah, I guess you are right, so much HEART, that they want to hit MANNY in the head, and so much TEAM and desire, that in order to win, they have to start a FIGHT.

Hey this is what it is...The Mets didn't get it done..again! They had their chances and blew it. The fact is they were decimated with injuries to many of their starters and then the guys who replaced them got injured and it's hard to win that way. Philly were a healthy group this year. The teams are pretty even and in fact, the Mets won the season series 11-7 and only lost 1 series to Philly. So they took care of their end when it came to playing the Phils. Did they press at the end? YES..They couldn't hit at the end because they knew no lead was safe and every batter was looking to hit it outta the park and didn't go up to the plate with the usual approach of moving runner and going with a pitch. They tried killing the ball and that just doesn't work. Hopefully,, they finally learned that they can't hit 3 run homers with the bases empty!

You know what? If we win just a few of those games in which we led before the pen blew them, the whole picture changes. So, ofcourse we don't know what would be, but the rest of the team did enough to win. Maybe asking them to win and overcome a terrible pen is too much to ask. These guys can win, asking management to get guys to close games isn't too much to ask.
