Lewis says he's built to last

The future is not now for Ray Lewis . On his first day of training camp at McDaniel College in Westminster today, the nine-time Pro Bowl linebacker and face of the Ravens franchise was chipper and cheery after ...

Lewis is still a high quality linebacker but, at his age, that will diminish somewhat every year starting about now.

Like everyone, I would love to see Lewis finish his career here and I am willing to see the team overpay simply because of who he is.

But this is not baseball. The salary cap looms large, so he must be willing to meet us halfway or the reality of Ray in another uniform will just have to be something with which we will have to live.

Very slanted take on a very light hearted interview. Before digesting any of what is written above, I suggest you listen to the Q & A yourself. Ray joked about the franchise tag comments and he spoke at length about rooming with Gooden and the help he is willing to give a young player.

The fact that Ray was talking to this young player who plays his position and made it possible to room with him shouldnhave been the story here. That is pretty rare with today's veterans.

When Brett Favre comes back to camp, is he rooming with Aaron Rodgers?

Well said. The fact is Ray Lewis has done nothing but perform and come to camp each year in great shape. I guess it's a catchier story to try and stir things up this way, but why wouldn't the fans want to read about our all-world MLB being, as usual, a positive guy who sets a great example year after year? Taking this slant makes no sense, it's just reporters trying to make a story where there isn't one. It's ludicrous to question him about next year's contract at the beginning of this year's training camp. Get real.

The Ravens wouldn't be the same without Ray. I hope the Ravens keep him no matter what.

I dont think that Lewis teaching Gooden is really different then anything else he's done.

Not trying to talk smack about Favre, but IMO Lewis is on a whole other level of greatness than Favre is on.

Ray Lewis...in his head...knows he's the best. I don't think there is any question in his mind. What makes Ray the best though isnt so much his speed, strength or knowledge of the game. For Lewis, greatness is determined by heart and passion...which you can't teach.

I think its the reason that the greats of any sport almost always fail as a coach...Magic Johnson...Michael Jordan...Frank Robinson....Larry Bird... All great players...and have a ton of knowledge...but none of them could teach heart.

Just like Ray Lewis...he can room with Gooden. Take him under his wing as a Miami Brother. Teach him how to read Offenses. How to carry himself...how to watch game tape.

But what Ray has inside of him cant be passed on. You either have it or you dont...and at the level Ray has it..Gooden may turn out to be an awesome Linebacker...but there will NEVER be another Ray Lewis.

Just like there will NEVER be another Michael Jordan.

"But when you can find yourself in a season like this where I didn't have to deal with none of that and am completely free to just trust everything that I believe in and just come back the way I feel right now, life is beautiful."

He's still real.

I have to admit, I was unsure of the comments I would read for this story but the people who have posted impress me.

Ray is a modern-day football icon, give the man what he is due and let him play the game.

At least he gives his heart and soul to the game and doesn't just collect a check year after year.

No way we left him hit the open market. Ray has to remain a Raven for life. Sign him to an extension. We can let Bart Scott go next year and probably Trevor Pryce and Samari Rolle. That should clear up plenty of cap space to sign Suggs and Lewis.

Well, the Ravens will be faced with trying to resign Lewis, Suggs and Scott next yr as all will be FA unless some new deals are worked out before they hit the FA market.
Npt goimg tp be easy to keep them all!

He'll get hurt early and be out the rest of the season. You heard it here first. That shoulder isn't any good anymore. Trade him for somebody younger.
