I agree with Sandra - my life-long love of horses used to include the sport of thoroughbred racing, but no longer.

I completely agree with Sandra from Farmington. I have loved watching thoroughbred horse racing over the years. These animals are magnificent. But, after the Derby, I am done watching this "sport." I cannot stand to see another horse put down. I can't stand to even think about all of the horses that are sacrificed for the pleasure of humans. It's not right.
YOu are right on and I'm so happy to hear that you will no longer contribute to this "sport's" financial success. More and more people are learning about the manipulation and exploitation of these animals and hopefully we'll see a lull in ticket sales.

Drugs, Deception, and Death
The horse-racing industry is fraught with cruelty. It is common for trainers and veterinarians to use drugs—both legal and illegal—to treat injuries that horses incur while running. Lasix is a legal drug that stops bleeding in the lungs while also masking the presence of other drugs in a horse's system. Phenylbutazone is a commonly used painkiller that allows horses to run with minor injuries, which may result in more serious injuries.

The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality.~Schopenhauer

"PETA averts its eyes from nothing, and shrieks at the world to make it see what PETA sees-ready or not."
-The Virginian -Pilot

Peta's Mission Statement

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 1.8 million members and supporters, is the largest animal rights organization in the world.

PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other "pests," and the abuse of backyard dogs.

PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns.

The Rev. Al Sharpton
"If we give our money to KFC, we're paying for a life of misery for some of God's most helpless creatures."
(The New York Times)

Joaquin Phoenix
"I think you're a f---ing a--hole if you wear fur. It's ridiculous! There's no need for real fur—since there are compassionate alternatives. And furs are ugly in general, be they synthetic or real. Don't tell me it's about warmth, because people who wear furs wouldn't be caught dead in big down coats."
(W)

"We are calling for cruelty to animal charges to be pressed regarding Eight Belles against the jockey and the owners of the horse," Rajt said. "It is actually a Kentucky state cruelty to animal charge. We also say the steward's board at Churchill Downs needs to immediately file a complaint against jockey Gabriel Saez for whipping Eight Belles as she came down the final stretch to the wire. We need standards in place to bar horse owners who allow this kind of cruelty."

I understand that there is a moral argument for removing criminals, but... Animal abusers should also be removed from the gene pool in the interests of eugenics. Criminality and psychopathic behaviour traits are, to an extent, heritable. People who eat meat are also known to be more primitive than vegetarians/vegans . Anyone can eat meat, but primitive people cannot survive without it because they are genetically defective. Brahmins in India forced Dalits (low-caste, the lowest of the low) to be vegetarian as an experiment to see how primitive they were and many of them ended up malnourished and deformed. Sounds like quite an interesting experiment to me. Sorry if this makes me sound like a Nazi, but I get really twitchy about this issue. I think that many animal murderers are ugly genetic detritous who make our society ugly. Some people eat meat because they are indoctrinated. I can accept that, but the people who cannot survive without it, because of physical ineptitude do not deserve to live. They are life not worthy of life. In a better society employers should be able to refuse employment to meat-eaters (passive animal abusers) and landlords should also be able to evict such people, the same way that they might want to evict paedophiles. This is humane alternative to putting them into internment camps. We would also have to deny them access to the welfare system, unless they agree to be sterilised. Talking of Nazis, why equate Cass with Hitler? Adolf Hitler recycled animal abusers.
**********

Don't agree with all the above, but I find it interesting, it's reasoning seems tailor made for a slaughter loving meat freak like Cruella NancyD.

Facts--

1. Race horses frequently suffer injuries because they are forced to train and race before their skeletal system has finished growing.

**********

2. To compete in the races with the largest purses — which are for 2 and 3 year olds — horses must be trained and raced at too young an age, before their bones’ growth plates have matured. This causes many lower-limb ailments and injuries, including fractures, pulled ligaments, and strained tendons. Such injuries are common in horse racing.

**********

3. Riding horses are started at 3-4 years old, while race horses are often started as young as 1.5 years. Riding horses are brought along slowly and with as little stress to their still-maturing joints as possible, while race horses are forced to run beyond their limits, pounding their still-developing joints into the ground. When the riding horse is just entering his prime, the race horse is ending his career, and possibly his life.

**********

4. One study showed that for every 22 races, at least one horse suffers an injury severe enough to prevent him or her from finishing a race. Another study estimated that 800 Thoroughbreds die from racing-related injuries every year in North America. Most owners are not willing to pay high veterinary fees for an injured horse who is unlikely to ever race again, and instead, choose to euthanize the animal.
