Oh Farkuss...you're way too little and way too late. Go back and read my post about the symbiotic relationship between city and suburbs. The Chicago you know and love doesn't exist without the suburbs. On top of that, with the state of Illinois paying for part of the Olympic Games as well, everyone in the Land of Lincoln gets a say. Then go back and read my post about how Topix reads where my ISP is at, not where I am physically located.

Now run along and conduct another one of your "scientific" polls where you ask everyone you know if they want the Olympics. Then ask them if they're just saying they don't want the Olympics so you'll stop ranting.

wrong. sponsors picked up half of the cost over runs. taxpayers were saddled with the rest.
By my math it was more than half, but you are correct that it was not ALL picked up by private donors. A large chunk of it was though, and that's the point. There are private individuals and organizations who will spend money on the Olympics. To say that Millennium Park was completely thrown on the backs of the taxpayers of Chicago is disingenuous. And the park that the city got out of the deal is spectacular. Chicago can expect to get many more improvements by the time the Chicago Olympic Games start in 2016.

Lucky daughters you have. Most Chicagoans will not be able to get or afford tickets.

The vast majority of people in Chicago DO want the games but are concerned about how it will be paid for.
Show me the statistically accurate poll of those who live in Chicago who will pick up the tab that backs up your argument.

That's why there ares like the "Pritzker Pavilion", Chase Promenade, and the BP Pedestrian Bridge. See how easy that was?
We could have the NBC Blue Line, and the Pat Ryan temporary stadium, etc. without the Olympics and without putting taxpayers on the hook.

But, you don't shut everything down because the corrupt politicians will get fat off of it. YOU GET RID OF THE CORRUPTION!
We're not suggesting shutting down the Olympics, just hosting them somewhere that Chicagoans don't have to pay for the games.

Once we get rid of corruption in Chicago, then we can talk hosting an Olympiad here.

Get it right. The suburbs don't exist without Chicago.

And yes, every adult in Illinois is on the hook for about $26. I can see where that might not scare you off. But the rest of the tab is to be picked up by people who actually live in Chicago, unless you actually believe our mumbling mayor.

Cheers to the USOC if it's actions help the IOC find reason NOT to host the Olympics in Chicago.

Unless of course NBC wants to put up the money for the games here and save us taxpayers.

This would be the worst of all possible circumstances -- Chicago losing the bid because of the pure greed and incompetence of the USOC. There are good reasons we should be doubted for the bid; the financial guarantees from the city and the mayor are weak and our public transit is questionable without proper state support. But if we lose the bid because of the USOC, no one will have learned a darned thing from this episode.

Seeing as how there are 3 million of us in the City and another 6 mil in the burbs, your statement is correct, and logistically reasonable.

By your logic we should cancel all events unless and until all Chicagoans who want to can attend.

So would you spend $20 to make $35?

No local government big enough to hold an event such as this is free of corruption, nor will ever be. We are imperfect animals, and will behave imperfectly.

Settle down and enjoy yourself. Life is a lot bigger than some trifling $.04 tax on bottled water and cheeseburgers, it really is.

Chicago deserves the Olympics based on need; Rio is already the global capital Alpha City of Brazil. Chicago is in older, industrial city representing a region (rust belt) in decline.

The Olympics would help ascertain our region's global relevancy, promote a new city to global status that it rightly deserves and energize the public.

The naysayers on this board seem ignorant to the benefits and quick to heap allegations of corruption on the city's bid. I ask you, if you think the 3 or 4 contractors large enough to bid on the work are corrupt, are you willing to bid on the work yourself? I didnt think so.

Thank USOC. Please keep getting in the way and screwing things up for Chicago. The last thing we need here is the boondogle Olympics. An event designed to just make Daley's friends rich and have everyone else pay for it.

It's interesting that the people posting claiming that Chicagoans want the games are from the suburbs (as shown by their ISP). I live in the city. I do not know a single person in the city who wants the games. I have seen polls that show Chicagoans 2-1 against the games.
I've been hoping for anything to sabotage the Chicago bid. I though Blago or Burris could do it. Blago's chief of staff who recently plead guilty allegedly has been giving info to the feds beyond Blago. Of course, he used to be a right hand man for Daley. Let's hope the IOC or one of our great Illinois politicians, including Daley, can bring down the bid.
Here's the thing: If Daley put forth the effort to improve schools, infrastructure, and transit in the same measure he has for the games, we wouldn't need the games.
There are posters all over the city showing an image of an athlete with the tag line "Imagine." I think most Chicagoans imagine a clean city government that provides good schools and services and cares as much about those things as they do about the Olympics.
It would be nice to see the business community get as excited about good schools as they seem to be about the Olympics. Having good employees over the long haul is much more important than the silly Olympics.
Good post Rick. I live in the suburbs and have friends and relatives in the city and in other suburbs and no one I know is interested in hosting the games. I totally agree, if there was the same drive and focus on the schools and just plain making them safe at this point would be a better use of the Mayor's time. It's embarrassing that we can't even provide a safe living environment for many in the city...and they want to host the world here for a month? I don't think so.

Daley and his minions who have robbed this city for two decades do NOT deserve the chance to host the Olympics.
Sure its nice and would be fun to have a real big event, but not with Daley driving it. Too much corruption.

Daily Horoscope for December 29

Libra

An emotional situation is as clear as mud today. You aren't sure about your feelings for a certain someone, nor are you convinced that you know what they're playing at. They may be saying one thing and doing another, and you might even suspect that they're playing games with you or trying to get what they can out of the relationship. Or maybe you're imagining the whole thing? Admit it - at this stage you simply don't know.
