The public down there has no problem belly aching to the media about wanting more police presence....and then when the police address the problem....those same citizens call the effort racist.

"People are shooting all the time. They need to get some kind of security. Why can't they do something for the residents' well-being?" the mother of eight asked." Who is the "they" she is asking about? If the people that live there and know these thugs, that witness this violence, will not come forward and identify the perps - just who is supposed to do what? I don't understand!

Exactly right! The street creed is silence, no one wants to turn over names or snitch on the "hood boyz". As long as there is that mentality thriving, there will never be peace in the east end. And as poster 1 pointed out, showing a sronger police presence will only bring out cries of racial profiling or intimidation. They want it fixed, they want it now, they want it to stop. Great plan. Now, accept the fact that more police presence is needed, accept the fact that someone will have to testify against someone from the hood, accept the fact PERSONAL responsibility and lack of discipline created this mess. AND realize that there is NOTHING that Obama can or will do to help end this violence....all you're going to get is lip service. It starts with the community, not the city, state or federal government. Citizens actions will put the wheels of healing in motion. Start today.

What is really sad, my child goes to school there (Newsome Park Elementary) It used to be a great school until they closed Briarfield and all the Thuglettes started going there. My condolences to the family of this child called away at a young age! I hope they catch the people responsible.

First of all, not a single one so far has addressed that a child has been killed, my condolences to his family and friends. RIP Taken from us all to soon. The creed of silence is just crazy. Parents need to wake up and smell the coffee, your child could be next. I am all for Obama, but he will not be able to fix this, only the folks that live there can.

That said I do agree that the people that live in the neighborhood need to address their own problem and not moan and complain about it. Actions speak lounder than any words!

That was a slight on my part and I apologize for that. No parent should ever have to endure this type of senseless violence. I feel for this childs family and offer my prayers during this difficult time for them. I was taken aback by the mother of 8 and her comments about - to paraphrase - someone's got to do something. I focused on that and forgot to mention the life lost. Thanks for getting me realligned this morning....

Clearly we need people to support the police and follow through with truthful testimony in order to stop this violence. Until people do so, this type of behavior will continue because the kids have guns, they are willing to use them and there are no ramifications. Everyone is big and bad ... and there is no chance to stop it until you stand up against it. Think hard before you step back - we need you to come forward to bring it to an end. And usually if two people stand together and come forward, others will too ... then the tide can turn!

My condolences to the family. Very sad situation. That said...they quote a mother of 8 (EIGHT)-how in the heck can she afford 8???? She wants more police presence? There is plenty of police presence in that neck of the woods. It's the refusal of the citizens that live there to cooperate with the police that is the problem. Their fear of retribution may be real, but when do you just say, that's enough. Take your life and your community back.

Because she is Section 8, who also recieves her government check, food stamps and on and on. That's how she's a mother of 8. Probably nevers leaves the recliner except to walk to the fridge. I do send my condolences to the family also. My intent is to not come off like I don't care, because I do. My point is that practically all Section 8 housing areas are crime ridden. As long as people can live for free , extra money will come through illegal activities.

Absolutely right, the people of the East End community must arise from their somber sleep and advocate for justice no matter the consequences but I can understand how hard this may be when they see these killers on a day to day bases and they know the consequences of their actions (snitching). It is a stupid rule of law in the hood that will only terrorize the community but it is real. Citizens like us should do whatever we can to rectify the situation by lending a helping hand. We are apart of the larger community and the occurrences that happen there will affect citizens all over the city. Lastly, I am deeply sorry for the loss. Something must be done.

May God Bless the family of this child and be with you during your time of need. I don't know the family, but it is such a shame to lose such a young life. Put it in God's hands and he will take care of you.

Its really sad that things of this nature are occuring in newport news va. I am only 17 I used to live in orcutt home 34th and the crime was no different.I now live in Maryland & i can say its alot differant. I knew Duke and I know tony Rose the one that was found with the bullet wound in his lower back. All these kids sufering for what parents never taught thier childrens years ago. I have witnessed many of these crimes and shootings and they leave some people scared for life. Its not a good thing that downtown newport news is turning into the next "New Jack City" as for as the drugs, robbery, and murder. There should really be a change because there shoulf be no reason why theres 10 years olds with rachets.

I always find it interesting that the folks that post here are experts on the East End and the 'hood and yet, your message doesn't seem to reach the people that need to hear it the most. So how about this: The next time you have a brilliant idea on how to fix things in a part of YOUR community, drive on over to the East End and pass out fliers with your plan clearly printed on it. But don't get out of your car. Just drive down each street, crack your window a little bit and throw out one flier on each block. Somebody may or may not find it and read it. And you will feel proud of yourself and feel like you have finally done something useful other than post here where no one in the East End or the hood will ever read it. Because an expert would know that.
