Just like yesterday

The 23 members of the 1983 World Series championship team who assembled at Oriole Park yesterday still had that certain something - call it chemistry, camaraderie, whatever - that bonded them together and ...

Went to the last two games of 1982 against the Brewers and I knew this crew was going to come back and win it all. Anyone who was at the Palmer-Sutton showdown knew and felt that it was going to be a long winter getting ready to win it all in '83.

Attended Lamaze classes during the '83 series - all the guys sneaking out on their wives and checking out the games where we could find a TV at St. Joseph's Hospital.

Sadly, my son will be 25 this December and we haven't been back to a World Series since.

Oriole fans who remember the quality and class the franchise used to represent can only shake our heads at the protracted incompetence and arrogance of the Angelos mob. MacPhail has begun to turn things around, but it's obviously going to take awhile to overcome the accumulated consequences of a decade of mismanagement.

I was at the game last night and it was great that they had so many of the guys back, but it made me wonder where some of the others that weren't there are. Lowenstein might have been the biggest name that wasn't there. Rich Dauer was a coach last I heard, so maybe that's where he was. Is Altobelli still alive?

Only in Baltimore do you celebrate an anniversary like this.

I think that it pathetic that we have to celebrate 24 years of futility. If Peter Angelos and Company would put a quality on the field, we might have a few more rings. If things continue as they are we will be just like the Cubs...

It's been a long, long time since the O's have won a World Series.

Fortunately, they've brought in a guy from the Chicago Cubs because we know the Cubs are all about winning the World Series.

Ranman52, There's a Simon and Garfunkel song with a line that explains why the team celebrated last night: "preserve your memories, they're all that's left.'' Memories are the one Orioles treasure that Angelos hasn't destroyed. His name is just another way of spelling "lose" and "nag."

"Well, I'd like to get them here, come more often than just on these types of occasions," the manager said yesterday. "I'd certainly like them to know that they have an open invitation to come anytime. We're here because of what they did, and I'd certainly like to welcome those guys to come in our clubhouse and be in our batting cage and sit in my office and have a cup of coffee. There's no substitute for guys who've been there and done it before."

We have to remember that we had the best team in 97'. The team had some bad luck against an Indian team that won some 15 games less than we did that year. I have to give this current regime credit for that.

We had the best team in 97' by far. Just a couple of hanging sliders and Lenny Webster playing footsie behind the plate kept us from a World's Championship. Don't you remember how close that was??? I contend if we had gotten home as we should have this lynch mob would not be forming. And it was so close to happening.

This is so true. The O's were competitive and fun to watch thru the late 90s. You can't demand World Series rings every year...but it's reasonable to want to watch a quality product...to be in the hunt year to year...and to be building for the future. For some reason all tracked south. I wonder why.

I hang it on wretched, awful drafting. If we had made the most of all those high picks (including 7 in the top 52 in 99') we would be in contention already. Part of it is having incompetents like Syd Thrift at the controls though, but if you took the right players often enough we have a solid core of players by now.

Well I think McPhail has the smarts to set things right over a few years. And then it's up to the ownership to sign enough of the successful players who we watch develop -- like Markakis -- to solidify both team and fan base. That's very much why I'd like Roberts to stay. The O's need to make a point of keeping some of their most successful homegrown players.

Drafts are a crapshoot though. I blame it on a massive lack of player development in the minors, horrendous mismanagement at the GM position, and retooling the team with mid-level has-beens instead of truly rebuilding.

I'm looking forward to the 26th anniversary of the 1983 team. I think it's scheduled for a Tuesday night against the Royals.

Anybody that was around town in the late 70's early 80's can tell you about the link between the town and the team. I think yesterday showed not only that they were our guys but that we were theirs too.
Alomar and Bonilla were just mercenaries.

its ridiculous to think the "late 90s" mirage in any way makes up for what Angelos has done to a team that hadn't had a losing season in my life until I was 19 (I'm 41 now) and has only had two or three winning seasons since (courtesy of a bunch of mercenaries)-- not to mention the complete dismantling of THE ORIOLE WAY (which was rooted in class and that link between the team and town). THE FACT THEY HAD THIS REUNION ON A WEDNESDAY NIGHT AGAINST THE BLUE JAYS SAYS ENOOUGH ABOUT HOW UTERLY PATHETIC ANGELOS AND HIS GROUP ARE!!!
