and I hope they got tickets for being drunk also. Who in their right minds would go swimming after dark in Lake Michigan. Don't they hear the news, don't they read the papers, don't they have any common sense?????? They put those cops' lives in danger also. People are so selfish. It was her birthday, so what?

they should have gotten tickets and a good swift kick to the back of the head to knock some common sense into them. two grown adults that cant handle thier liquor , well at least that cold swim in the lake sobered them up for the drive home and we didnt hear about a death related dui crash. i say fine them quilty and make them do 40 hours a week of community service for the next 20 years , then they will have no time to do get drunk and do stupid poo and put others lives at risk.

I can't imagine going into the lake in the dark. Plain and simple. It's big and nature has a way all its own. I'm glad the people survived, and the bravery of the police is almost beyond me. So glad they are willing to do the jobs they do. Thanks!

A ticket was nothing compared to what could become of these two. It's ashame they didn't get fined the cost of having someone come out and rescue them. Why people think they can do stupid stuff and then expect others to put their lives on the line rescuing them is beyond me.

The first two posts are accusing these people of being drunk. Maybe I didn't read carefully enough but I didn't notice any mention in the article about these people drinking before they got in the water.

First of all why anybody would even want to dip a toe into that polluted cesspool let alone swim in it is beyond me.
Secondly swimming at that time of night is or should be against the law. At the very least they need to reimburse Evanston financially for the time and effort of the officers involved being that they were taken away from the more important task of patrolling the city and pay for the cleaning bills for the officers uniforms.
Finally they should be forced to do community service talks to all of the other imbeciles like them that think it is a good idea to go swimming in a dangerous lake without lifeguard protection.

Jimbo wrote: Night swims are romantic. Thank you... to all the safety nazis here saying "swimming at night should be illegal!" "Never swim at night! YOU'LL DIE!!!!". Grow a pair and live life a bit. I've swam at night on Evanston beaches several times... And it IS romantic and it has left me with some wonderful memories. However, I've only done it when the water is calm and the weather stable. These two are idiots. Five foot swells and a massive storm just passed... "Let's go jump in the water!" is downright dumb. Maybe they should've just sat on the beach and watched the water.

The article didn't say they were drinking but I think we can all read between the lines here. Birthday celebration, 10:30 pm, Lake Michigan - I can't imagine being drunk enough to think I"m going swimming in there at night!! What a couple of idiots (and adult idiots at that!!)

How much should they be compensated for sitting around eating free donuts and drinking coffee? Good to see they actually had to do something for their paycheck!

It must have been a horrible experience for these swimmers. If the water is rough, don't go in the water.
