But in the spirit of trying to keep this discussion on football, Peter King today on SI.com posed an interesting theory on what Miami may try to do with #1 pick: that they could offer four individual players a contract for the #1 spot, but a contract that is say only 5% more than the third pick last year. And see which one will agree to play for that enormous amount of money and select him.
King thinks that at least one of the players would take that deal, just doesn't say which one. His premise is that none of this year's top players are consensus #1, so why pay them like they are?
Thoughts?
Seems like operating in poor faith. Pick the one player which best serves the team and pay him accordingly, period. WS, you have a better feel for front office issues than me. Doesn't this scenario sound a little disingenuous?

It does. IMHO its not too dissimilar from the other talked-about 'strategy' of letting the clock expire and just pick whenever they want to. I personally don't think that the trifecta would go that route: I think they'll have someone they feel strongly about and go with that selection. Again, IMHO.

i hope that whenever this cba stuff gets settled, they fix this somewhat. If I'm a proven veteran, I'm getting p-o'd a rookie that may never even start his first year gets such a huge contract just because he got drafted the 1st! make it incentive laden...if he proves his worth, give him him millions, but not guaranteed. IMO it's ridiculous!

I agree completely. Time to put a slotted scale in place like the NBA and end this. Gee, and no more first round holdouts either.

Another merry-go-round reference? Exactly how many times have you posted the same BORING words? What's the matter Woody? Did someone steal your rocking horse as a child? Or was that just last week? Maybe you just ran out of Ensure again.

As I said before, you are slipping Greg. You've got nothing to say, and you keep saying it over and over again. Can we just end this now, please? This is boring me to tears.

To my fellow Dolphin fans - it has been fun talking Dolphins football in these forums. It certainly helps pass the time during the offseason and leading up to the draft to talk strategies, etc. But after being out for a week for family reasons, I've returned to figure out that I'm not really interested in the nonsesne that these trolls are engaged in. This has degenerated into something that has nothing to do with football any longer, and that's really not very interesting IMHO. So I'll see you around, but I think I've had enough of this nonsense.

I agree . These guys are rookies and haven't proven a thing. This brings up a question. Is the pay a #1 pick gets also based on what position he plays? For instance, QB's are usually higher paid than say Punters, or o-linemen.
IF this is so, then say the fins wanted MATT RYAN. The they know they will pay out the nose for him, but maybe they wouldn't have to pay quite as much if they were to say, pick JAKE Long, with that same #1 pick. Maybe Chris Long would be in between those 2 money wise , with the 1st pick. Again, I don't really know, but if that theory is true to some extent, wouldn't that make it easier to pick JAKE or CHRIS Long over Matt Ryan?

Noooooooooo! Consider the real Dolfans that count on your insight. We're the 99%ers. The 'phins get some wins under their belts and and the freaks will miraculously disappear... think Patriot Jake. I tried to respond to your football query to help achieve balance in this...but it's always the 1% that get our undeserved attention. I'm new at all this. I would appreciate if you didn't bail just yet.

The NBA's entire pay system (which has it's OWN problems) is different then the NFL. You can't put a rookie salary structure like the NBA's in the NFL without throwing out the whole CBA...which is exactly what the owner are going to threaten to do soon.

The players love the CBA, and the owners don't mind sharing, but they don't want to waste so much money on unproven players (seems reasonable).

As I mentioned on another thread though, the problem is that the rookie salaries set the scale for the following FA season.

The veterans (like vernon carey) would love to see a guy a like J. Long go first. Cuz it means that if he has a good year next year (left or right tackle) he's gonna get 30million bucks.

So yeah, the systems broken, but fixing it is not so ez as just saying rookies get "x".

I truly don't think this thing is going to be resolved until some sort of a lockout happens. This league is not going to let this go on very much longer.

The dolphins may very well be the LAST team required to mortgage such a large percentage of their payroll to a player who's never played before.

Just our luck eh!

Agreed. No one wants to see you go Woodstrock...just focus on what you're good at...football...and let the rest go.

I'm trying the same fwiw.
