Howard Beale Jr wrote:
When good and decent and moral people lose interest in government, the others just take over. From the looks of the headlines, cities such as Detroit, DC, East Cleveland, and Akron are prime examples. Akron of the last two generations (at least) has equated to Apathy.
And who suffers? The very ones who became turned off... apathetic to the situation. Evidently, this is what it has come to here. Businesses leaving, property owners leaving, safety forces leaving. And those of us remaining get stuck with the higher tab and told to defend for ourselves (unarmed, of course).
The scalawags downtown will not have you believe that they are, in fact, PUBLIC servants. But THEY are the ones garnering paychecks because THEY assumed the problem-solving. They don't want OUR input. THEY wanted their position. And now, safely re-elected and ensconced in power, they laugh in your face when you tell them there are other solutions needed in this city than just corporate welfare. They are getting paid to properly address thier city's problems, not you and me or the Arby's man. He's done his part.
Fewer taxpayers, fewer cops, growing crime, let-'em-eat-cake city government.. Yea, IMO, that's the engredients for a bright future for this place. I'm headin' south before this place kills me.
I was born here, lived most of my long life here, and I've never seen such an insulated, arrogant, and uncaring city administration when it come to the welfare of the neighborhoods and We The People.
Pardon my rant. But I'm Mad As Hell. You?

You know, I live and work in Akron, and am so sick and freakin' tired of this. But today, today is different. I'm ashamed to admit that I haven't done this before. I'm asking for help and direction. Instead of posting on these boards complaining about the city, the leadership (or obvious lack thereof), I'm changing my strategy. How do I get involved? When are the City Council meetings? Can anyone attend? Can anyone raise issues? When do we vote on these guys? I'm not only asking for answers here. I'm asking all of you that are sick and tired to unite, stand up, and take back our City!!! We should, we're the ones paying for it!!!! Please advise.

A small one-way window and slot in the wall behind the counter. Inside is a guard with a rifle. But which window slot actually has an armed guard? You guess. It will be called "robbers roulette".

Maybe Arby's should build trap doors right in front of the counter and drop the thugs into a small room filled with spoiled roast beef.

OK this isn't a helpful suggestion.....neither are any of the other ones I've read so far.

I think all the Arby's, the McDonalds, the Wendy's and Taco Bell's should get together and build themselves a food court in various locations, as they do in the malls.

The place doesn't have to be located inside a mall, and what are the chances of a thug coming in and robbing the place when you have employees from each restaurant right there?

Look what they could save on gas and electric if they split the bills between them.

Aw, I think my "window slot rifle roulette" has possibilities. It was just a rough idea. Work on it.

I know the answer, but the black community wouldn't want to hear it.

APD should be allowed to stop, pat down, and question every black male in a black hoody on the sidewalks, in the streets, and driving. Think about it..any real rational person can see how that in itself is probable cause. Easily, 90% of all the robberies in Akron have been committed by suspects with that description.

However,we live in Akron. Start doing that, and the black community would have a fit. "It's part of our culture, and the police are racist," they would cry. The mayor and the new police auditor would cave, and officers would face serious disciplinary action. Also, our liberal judges would throw all the cases out for lack of probable cause.

If I were a business owner, I would tell the city to go to he**.

That idea makes far too much sense! Moreso, getting the corporate likes of these companies that are in direct competition with each other to cooperate on such a project would likely be impossible.
I also like the idea of a trap door in the floor, or maybe a net that drops from the ceiling! More realistically perhaps, the restaurants could install double-door foyers that could be locked when the robber tries to make their exit. I've seen similar type configurations in convenience stores where the clerk can lock their assailant in the store until the police arrive. Always funny to watch on them try to get out on the various police video shows on tv.
It would not be as funny if you were locked in there with an armed thug now desperate to get out. The possibility would make me skip Arbys.

Sounds like Beuhler has stepped up to the plate by taking additional measures and attending city council meetings. It is time for the city to step up as well. I agree if there are millions to keep Bridgestone and Goodyear here, certainly there has to be a few thousand available to assist Mr Buehler. To not assist him with funds or additional security after his additional investment is NOT an option. Get off your duffs council and do something!!!

I applaud Mr. Beuhler for his efforts. From experience, I can tell you that cameras are no help. They catch a robbery on video, show it to the police, and the police will tell you they don't know who it is and they can't catch them. No fault of the police, just fact. I live a block away from the Tallmadge Ave Arby's, and have witnessed my neighborhood fall victim to the thug element that has moved in. I believe the lack of action on the mayor's part is punishment for our ward overwhelmingly voting for Finley for Mayor. Also, I don't really think he and Kilby get along too famously either. The citizens are paying the price for political catfights.

City Council told this guy to partner with neighborhood business to figure out what they could do.....Up on Romig Road, what businesses would that be? If I were Mike Freeman, I would have asked this very nice gentleman to schedule some time to discuss what he could do to help. City Council is, at this point, leaving it up to the individual Ward councilman to find their own answers to crime in their neighborhoods. As a result, we aren't seeing any positive results. I would be more than happy to sit down with Adam and discuss creative ways to combat what is now a city-wide problem. Why isn't anyone on City Council wiling to do that. It is great to idenify a problem. However, if you are someone who can identify a problem but not come up with any solutions, well, then you simply aren't worth much to citizens. The NAACP! Some things never change.
Apd did have stake outs and killed 2 or 3 Robbers. Then the robberys stopped. The black community hollered we are only killing black men. Then the stake out stopped and the robberys started again.

Indeed.

The city of Akron needs to step up its efforts to fight crime, but if this thread isn't an online KKK rally, I don't know what is.

I implicitly agree with this post. All the more reason to take this kind of problem outside City Council where it is just the Ward Councilman and the business owner/citizen. There is no bias, prejudice, or political motivation. There is no one stonewalling you because you do not buy into what their agenda is. Creativity and innovation as it pertains to local government is absent. Stephen J Bartek Democrat for City Council 2009

The problem is no consequences for these idiots. If they are even put in jail they know they will be out soon. It will take a few of these idiots being killed in order for them to think twice about doing what they are doing, or you start telling people if they are caught robbing anyone that their strong hand will be cut off at the wrist, I think they will begin to listen.

Your restaurants are being assessed a hood tax.. It’s an illegal tax being collected in an illegal way and the law is on your side. Here’s what you do:

If you have any of any of those silly “no guns” signs, get rid of them (a lot of good they’re doing - right?). Then get a large piece of cardboard and write the following on it:“Legally armed citizens welcome. 10% discount on all food purchases when you show us your Ohio Concealed Carry License”. Put it in your window, publicize it, and watch what happens. I’m going to bet that crime will drop dramatically, and your business will pick up.

Also consider get appropriate training and acquiring your own CCL. Permit and encourage your employees to do the same. Give police officers the same 10% discount. Encourage neighboring business to do the same, and the whole neighborhood might become a bit safer. I believe the same approach, applied to Rolling Acres, could turn the entire mall around.

You shouldn’t have to deal with this, but our society has created this situation by allowing generations of babies to grow up without being civilized (taught the concepts of responsibility, deferred gratification, self-discipline, self-control, compassion, endurance and persurverence, etc.). We let them drop out of school (because they need these traits to graduate) and then somehow “magically” expect them to exist in a civilized society without stealing or robbing to survive. We have forgotten that in our form of government, freedom and responsibility are two words for the exact same thing. Like two sides of a coin - neither can exist without the other.

We should not and can not expect the police to be able to stop crime. That is the job of every parent starting the day their child is born. The above solution is like narcotics for a toothache, it’s a temporary solution, but the underlying problem must be addressed. We don’t seem to see this.
