When they start arriving at school and leaving when I arrive and leave work every day, THEN it will be considered a FT job. NO JOB that allows 2 week vacations every 9 weeks and 5 in the summer can be considered FT. Every day I arrive a my workplace as the teachers at the school next door are rolling in. The kids spend 2.5 hours/day outside the classroom at lunch, extras, and recess - during which time they call parents and grade papers. Their parking lot is empty a solid 1.5 hours before I can leave, assuming all work is done. And every month they have at least 1 planning day with no kids to plan out their lessons. They usually only work 2-3 hours those days. Maybe you should become a teacher.

I have looked into moving to your area (Ocala). My parents live in The Villages and I may have to relocate there eventually to care for them. I cannot afford the pay cut at this point, and they are in good health so they don't need me cramping their style at this stage. Those old folks sure know how to party; I can barely keep up with them when I visit! Anyway, I am grateful that Connecticut seems to pay at a higher rate, but I suppose when we consider the difference in the cost of living, it is not that big of a difference. I read in my local newspaper that 73% of my property taxes go to pay for our town's schools, but I don't have kids. Why should I be punished for having mastered the "art" of birth control? That's the irony - we have taxpayers asking why they pay teachers' salaries, while I ask why I'm paying to educate other peoples' kids. Is there any solution? eGads wrote: <quoted text> Maybe you should become a teacher. (BTW..if you think teachers are holding taxpayers hostage, you should see what your congress people are doing.)

I am contracted to work 190 days, but can easily whittle that down to 165 with sick, personal, and family illness days. Plus, if I happen to chaperone a dance or something, I get an additional day off for “compensation time”! I can’t be fired unless I smack a kid, and I don’t even care enough to do that. In fact, most of the time I’m just ignoring them until the day is over. I get a guaranteed raise every year. I love this racket. You folks who are ripping on teachers don’t even know the half of it! WE HAVE IT MADE!!! And, I bet you didn’t know that the unions give us “answer sheets” so that anytime people complain about how good we have it, we have a snappy comeback, which is where all the replies from teachers on this thread have come from!!! All I have to say to youse guyz is….you missed it! A teaching certificate is a ticket to ride the gravy train!!! GO GET ONE TODAY!!!!

To Teachers: One thing I've learned over the years is that when someone is a teacher basher, no amount of reasonable dialogue will alter the course of their limited thought process. Another thing I've learned is that when you feed their hostility with information that justifies their maligned sense of reality they only become more enraged. So, I've learned to enjoy watching teacher bashers become more and more enraged by feeding them their own beliefs. I've actually watched some of these people turn red and shake with anger when I give them the old "teaching is a racket, and I'm a teacher" routine. Try it. It's fun, inexpensive, and you'll be amazed at the results. School starts next week. Have a safe and successful year! From, A Teacher

I recently learned that some of my taxes go to plowing the highway when it snows...and I don't even USE the highway! In fact, they even used some of MY tax dollars to make improvements to it! Why should I be punished by all these travelers and people who have to commute to their out of town jobs? I bet some of those travelers don't even LIVE in my state! And they get to use the highway for free! Will it never end?

I never understood this whole concept of tenure anyway. Teachers incorrectly think we're bashing teachers - not true. I think the "system" sucks and they happen to be in it. I think tenure/unions is one of the leading causes of our failure in education. How motivated are you when you know you're permanent?

As a teacher who worked in the private sector for 15 years, I totally agree with you. If someone is doing his or her job effectively, one does not need tenure for protection. The quality of his/her work would speak for itself. I think teachers should have to be given raises and promotions based on merit, not tenure.
