It used to be that you and a couple college friends could go get a case or two, drive to a nearby secluded area of the county, and party by yourselves for the evening.

Try doing that now. It's too expensive for alcohol and gas to take anywhere. All the good secluded areas have been overrun with housing developments and street lights.

The kids who want to do it are going to do whatever they can to get it out of their systems. In a way, letting them drink earlier can be a way to find and weed out potential alcohol abusers early in their lives. Maybe they're the ones who really need to be dealt with using grants for more awareness programs at the schools. Who knows....

Others can sow their wild oats (or barley for that matter) and leave college a changed person after realizing that party drinking is not their style, but may actually be wiser from the experience.

I'm an ex-drinker myself. I was taught by the best.... U.S. Military comrades. I could hold my own in all the drinking games. One day, years later, I simply said "no more". It wasn't fun anymore. I have life to deal with now and it's easier (and cheaper) to do it when alcohol is out of the picture. I made that decision about 10 years ago and never regretted it. I didn't need any forced recovery program or jaded group support.

Do I regret ever drinking? No. It was an experience that actually made me wiser of the issue. I had my fun. Now I'm done with it. I don't consider myself special or anything because I was able to drop the habit instantly. However, I do feel I have a right to respond to anybody that says I "don't know" what it was like to be hooked on it.

Interesting post. I once had a college professor say that college is both about "higher" education and "lower" education.

The lower education has served me almost as well as the "higher" education. Dealing with drunks - dealing with unruly people. Dealing with emotional issues of friends. Dealing with managing a life outside of studying.

More importantly, I've been to job interviews where drinks were served and I know exactly what my limit is and "how" to drink. If you know how to have a few beers or a shot or two, where's the big deal?

Underage drinking is a whole different topic and "binge" drinking is an issue, but that issue itself is debatable. Too many colleges today think they will one day get that incident rate to 0. IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN.

My previous post was deleted. Another $11,000+ in taxpayer funds down the drain. Underage college drinking has been going on since the formation of the first college. Been there, done that, as the previous two posters mentioned. Some of us wised up. Bet York College Students are sending this glorious story and waste of taxpayer monies, to their friends back home.
They should have spent $120,000 on ALCOHOL SPOTTERS in the Jackson Avenue area of the city. Now that would have been money worthwhile spent.

Misleading facts from YCP once again...they tlak about alcohol citations ON campus...what about a block or two off campus? I used to love the safety reports saying how few violent assaults took place on campus but it would fail to take into acocunt all of the students who were jumped and robbed 102 blocks off-campus trying to get to their houses or Murph's.
