The York Daily Record
'Guns in the hands of good people'
June 28, 2008, was a defining moment in my life. It was the day I shot and killed a man in the defense of my life and the lives of others.

thank god this brave man was there if he he wasn't there how many innocent people would have been hurt by these two jackasses. I have always maintained when good people have guns bad people die just the way it should be

1 Who are you trying to fool, Sybil. You hate guns and hate the people that own them. You're nuts! |
|

Thank you for sharing your story. If it's worth anything, I think you did the right thing by stopping to help those women. The deranged man escalated the situation to the point at which you had to use deadly force to protect yourself. The blame is his.
Wishing you peace. |

If our communities were full of people like Mr. Fentiman, we would all be much more safe. I applaud his initiative in learning the laws and exercising his right to defend his life/property and also another fellow citizen's. His defense and exercising his rights is what keeps this country the best in the world! Ironically, he defends the rights of his staunchest dissenters.
Thank you for your service Mr. Fenitman and thank you for making the streets of York a better place! |

Robert A. Heinlein, the late Hugo and Nebula award winning science fiction writer, once wrote in an essay that every civilized human being needed to run for their life at least once to teach them three essential truths. One of those truths was that "Safety does not come from having policemen". A hundred years or so ago most Americans knew that they were responsible for keeping themselves and their families alive until "the cavalry rode over the hill". Now, sadly, most Americans will watch a violent act in progress glassy-eyed and uncomprehending, like cows watching a passing train. Well, I feel sorry for those folks and am quite sure that there are at least two young women who are very glad that Mr. Fentiman got involved. My thanks for what you did, Sir.

You did the right thing and you are a hero. How many times have people just drove by or watched and did nothing? You at least had the balls and decency to do something about it. It was a woman and her baby. He obviously had some serious anger issues and was grown enough to know right from wrong. You killed him, but even had the police come, it may have come down to them killing him too.
I hope you are able to know you did the right thing. |

My hat is off to you sir. This country needs more people like you to not only take responsibility for thier own personal protection but also take on the responsibility of protecting those who can't or won't protect themselves.

You absolutely did the right thing. Most all of us hope we never have to make the decision you did but I fully support you in taking the action you did. Criminals have for too long preyed on others with no fear of the consequences. They need to know there are consequences for un-warranted attacks on others.

This, coming from the mutha of all trolls? |

I would like to read such a story each day coming out of the cities of the USA. Maybe these aholes would not be so cocky, knowing that the average little guy is locked and loaded. Call it vigilantism or whatever, just too many people for the police to protect all. Most of us are getting the $hits of these idiots.

Mr. Fentiman,
Kudos to you Sir for having the decency and morale fiber to stand up for what you believe in. All of the sheeple that criticize the police for being crooked, crazy, immoral or what ever have never had to stand and look evil in the eye. They have never had to comfort the family who has lost a loved one to senseless violence that could have been prevented if there where more men in the world such as yourself. They have never had to look at the victim of violence caused by another human that leaves both physical and mental scars so deep and profound that the individual is forever changed. I have and unfortunately, you have too. Sir, take comfort and sleep well at night knowing that you made the right choice for one of the most difficult moral decisions you will ever have to face. Good Guys- 1 Bad Guys- 0 |

Many men have look the victim in the eye. It is called war. Good Job Mr. Fentiman, but let us not elevate this heroism too far.

I applaud the author for coming to the aid of a potential victim.
If I had to criticize any portion of his action, it would be the initial round to the thigh -- assuming that was where it was aimed. Although you never "shoot to kill" an attacker, you do "shoot to stop" him, and extremity shots may eventually kill a person but rarely are efficient at stopping an attack. If a prosecutor doesn't like you, he can easily twist these circumstances into evidence that you used lethal force in a situation that you didn't believe had risen to the level of needing lethal force (i.e., or else you would have shot him somewhere more lethal). If, on the other hand, the shot was in the leg because it was the only safe shot, or because there was a struggle for the gun, no criticism at all. |

Mr. Fentiman - You did the right thing. There are too many people in cities today whom are being victimized without need. I hope you actions inspire others to stand up for themselves! As for "computer Steve", he is a deadbeat who should worry more about the thousands of dollars in back taxes he owes than spending time commenting on every story he can find -

Good job, sir. Too many people don't get involved. It took a lot of courage to do what you did to help another in trouble. Just remember folks come Novemeber there's a guy who wants to take our second admentment rights away from us. And by taking guns from law abiding citizens it only makes the playing field more uneven since criminals will always be able to get guns.(If you don't believe what I'm saying look at the voting records in Congress or contact the NRA for a list of those votes.) Now I won't mention the fellow's name but John McCain is a sportsman, so it ain't him...got it now?? Again good job at doing your moral duty.

"The America we live in today is not the same country my father and mother experienced."
What do you mean by this quote? That we no longer look out for each other? Do you feel that things are different in a negative way? |
|

Way to go, Mr. Fentiman. YOU are a TRUE hero, sir and NOT some little puss that Katie Couric would take apart that just "happened" to encounter a dangerous situation. Hold your head high, sir, and don't beat yourself up over 1 scumbag that you rid the world of. You didn't get a request for an interview by Larry King, did you? I didn't think so. I surprised that our liberal newspaper had the ball to print your account of the incident.
