Paintball guns are sold as a toy or a hobby, but they pack quite a punch. That's leading some to question whether paintball guns should regulated.

Well he should have backed up from the feild if he didnt have a helmet. It was his fault he shouldnt have been near the feild with out a helmet. Teaches the parents and kid a lesson. When you buy the gun it even says on the box "Warning: Never be near a plantball gun if you arnt wearing the proper equipment. Treat as a real fire arm. Use at own risk"

Kids fault thats all it was. For the mom maybe you should teach your kid that he should have been farther away if he didnt have proper equipment. Also to the mom you fail as a parent.

So 10 million people play and 1200 get injuries because they didn't follow safety rules or measures. Now a CT mom wants big brother government to again intervene in our lives because we citizens are too stupid in her opinion! You let the kid have a paintball gun, you didn't supervise him, and now you want to mess with the rest of us because of you and your son's lack of better judgment. Too bad for you and your son, but stay out of our lives you socialist control freak!

i would never and will never sign the petition. its the parents responsibility to keep the kids safe not society's. maybe we should regulate football, soccer and ice hockey so her precious child doesn't get hurt on the field of athletic endeavor. her kid gets hurt so everyone has to pay. grow up lady and take responsibility for your childs actions. don't blame society

I'm getting so sick and tired of parents blaming the laws for their lack of common sense. It's unfortunate that any child gets hurt or maimed because of playing paintball but come on... they need to wear the protective gear (helmets, goggles) in addition to being old enough and parents really should be monitoring the game. Why don't we all just put our children in plastic bubbles so they can't get hurt while we work full-time and ignore them.

Here we go agin..Regulate ..liscense.. restrict??We would not want the parents to take any responsibility. Who bought the gun for him? Who gave the gun to him? Who let him play unsupervised? But lets blame the evil gun!! Wake up you idiots..take some responsibility for your actions!

I would just like to say that he had a helmet and he was shot during a break while on a break from playing by another person there was no negligence on the kid that got shot, just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, that is why it is called an accident, but there has to be some regulations or have the person purchasing the paintball gun be registered and responsible for whatever happen. Also in the state of Connecticut a person who injures or damages another person or his property with a paintballgun in Connecticut could be charged with a number of crimes depending on the facts, including assault with a firearm, manslaughter with a firearm, or criminal use of a firearm. A "firearm" is any WEAPON that fires a shot. This is all stated in the Connecicut statues and although no state expressly prohibit the misuse of a paintball guns, these guns fit most states' definition of a "weapon" and as such laws regulating the sale, possession, use, or transportation of weapons apply to paintball guns. We are not tryng to BAN paintball guns but to raise awareness and to have them regulated and registered like any other weapon in should be. thanks for your comment. And as to him backing up from the field he was along with 2-3 other people. I do not fail as a parent for someone elses mistake, if that was the case do not get into a car accident withyour kid in the car because if your child gets injured then you failed as a parents, that we can not prevent, but injuries that are unnecessary yet common are preventable with regulations and maybe a course needed before being able to purchase a paintball gun "marker". Thanks for your comment and your opinion everyone is entitled to one but make sure you know all the facts first. Thanks again, and remember we are not BANNING the sport or trying too..

It's a shame that the accident occurred, but I agree w/ everyone that the blame should not be put on society. As sad as it may seem, it comes down to common sense. If one has played the sport and been hit by a paintball, one knows that it stings. Why would one not have their helmet on and have any gun in the surrounding area not plugged, especially in one's backyard?

Don't take any responsibility for your actions. the parents are responsible for that injury.Where was the supervision of the game? where were the parents or any adult? No regulation will stop irresponsible adults from having this happen again to unregulated games to children that are UNSUPERVISED. Stop blaming everything else for your neglence.

Melissa, You are a nutcase I hope you know. Sad to hear about your kid but putting paintball guns in the same class as firearms??

My kid got hurt by a kickball in school, I guess if I had the same spare time you do I could get them to regulate the balls the same as cannon balls or something.

Melissa - while we all feel for your son what happened was an accident, an accident that would not have been prevented by registering or 'locking' the paintball gun. As a former paintball store owner I have to say you are way off base here. This accident happened because another person disregarded the safety rules that are on each and every box that a paintball gun is sent in. As for the paintball gun being the same as a regular gun, you obviously have no knowledge of gun laws here in CT. If you can list just one way registering a paintball gun would have prevented this accident I will sign that stupid petition. But if you are going to come back and say this other person can be held responsible if the gun was 'registered' dont bother wasting your time. you know who did it, you dont need to trace the gun, and even if the gun was registered, and you didnt know who shot your son, how the heck would a registration help you. This is how this could have been prevented - 1) have proper supervision there, like yourself 2) dont play in the back yard with people that are not responsible, go to a playing field where you pay to have others look after your sons safety. This is just another way for people to point blame at others. I have played paintball since the day the game was born, I never has seen any problems (except some bumps and bruises) because when we played, we respected the paintball gun and followed all the safety rules. Maybe you should just do what the rest of America would do, sue the boy who didnt respect the rules and shot your son.

So what about my duffle bag full of old paintball guns that I havent touched for years would I be arrested for a unregistered gun, but the loop hole as a long gun in ct dose'nt need to registered like a shotgun/rifle it really wont matter so thats a good oxymoron.

I should also add that when I played baseball I was hit in the head with a ball when I wasnt looking and someone was 'fooling around'. I didnt run off and call for the general assembly to register baseballs to prevent a tragic accident like that happen to someone else. The boy learned his lesson and it never happend again - while this incident didnt end up like yours the premise is the same...when something goes wrong you dont need to run out and ruin something for everyone else just because of an isolated thing.

Its amazing to see how the concept of self responsibility is just so lost on some people. Its unfortunate he lost an eye but he decided to play the game and he decided to remove the facemask. But I guess its much easier to point your finger back at the horrible system than realize the blame lies on him.

I dont know but this woman keeps saying her son HAD A HELMET ON, maybe its the equipment that needs to be fixed? There are lots of things we do or we've done since we were younger that are regulated now because it makes sense, like lead paint in toys. Heck I remember my father bringing home mercury from his job and we watched it seep through our fingers and break into a million pieces on the floor. We now know its dangerous and harmful to us. Melissa, you believe in something go for it! At least she didnt sit back and say well my son got hurt screw the other kids if they get hurt too "oh well" She's trying to do something about it, I give her credit for that.

Lets create another law thats always the excuse for carelessness.Lets teach gun safty instead. When I was growing up bb guns were had by all and no one in our neighborhood shot anyones eye out.Maybe cause we tought safty before being allowed to use them without parental control. The laws dont protect use from the stupid acts of others.

Legislation and regulation are always the outcry of the feeble minded. Those who are too ignorant to take responsibility for their own actions go whining to the big brother government. Communist countries tell you what you can do and when you can do it.
Lady, what happended was called an accident. The only way to stop accidents, would be to outlaw stupidity. Of course, if stupidity were outlawed, then you wouldn't be around waving your silly petition.

Melissa--------- I am very sorry about what happened to your son.........I have played about 10 times over the last couple of years, its alot of fun and YES you have to be careful and most if not all is mostly common sense and just paying attention when it comes to saftey.....accidents WILL happen law or no law..........

Registering a paintball gun out & out rediculous...

You say you dont want to do away with the sport.....but you will turn a "simple" thing into a declaration of congress......you might as well "ban" the damn sport.........

The More government in our lives the more "incompetence" there will be.....look around you, girl, the more government gets involved in things the more complicated and disfunctional it gets..........
