The parents of this child should be held accountable for leaving a gun where a child could get a hold of it there have been enough warnings given on this subject. Involuntary manslaughter would be appropriate.

They made a mistake they will unfortunately be regreting the rest of their lives, they don't need criticism of hind sight from a bunch of opinionated idiots over the interent. Yes the gun should have been locked! But maybe couldn't afford one. Most people that live in that area or that town can't typically afford the descretionary income typically associated with owning a firearm today. Some firearms are very cheap, some are inherited even. Not everyone knows some police departments hand out free locks. These people and their relatives don't want to read what the press and people here are going to say, so keep it remorseful folks. They will live the rest of their lives remembering this day, They will not want to remember thinking the rest of the world hated them as much as they may feel so about themselves right now.

How awful - see what happens when you don't lock up firearms - in the first place why have one around when you have children - I know how bad the parents are hurting however, they need to pay for this horrible crime such carelessness - won't parents ever learn - I guess only the hard way - this happens time and again

Bad, Bad, Bad, horrible Parenting!!!!! How does one leave a gun under a pillow where a child could have access to it!!!!! Guns don't belong around children and if someone must have on in the home, how about a lock box or safe!!!!!!!!! I cant believe a 2 year old is dead because of this!

I will bet there will be plenty of postings where people will bash having guns in the house. We have guns in our house with a 3 1/2 yr old and one on the way. They are fully locked up with the ammo stashed on a high shelf where nothing can get to it. Problem - guess it's not that good when a trespasser comes in to hurt us. We teach our child never to touch or play and always keep the room in which our guns are closed. No doubt the parents are suffering so much from this - this would make them good advocates for gun safety. Did they even have a permit?

both parents were home at time of incident, gun found by 2 year old child, child in another room unsupervised child accidentally shot themself fact is, parents were not watching their child and ensuring the child's safety at all times.... will be interesting to see how they rule on this.

How many of you as kids slept in the parents bed? The gun should not have been under the pillow period. It takes responsibility to possess a gun.

A safe or lock is all that is needed, and to say some people cant afford the lock, but can afford the gun is absurd, then you don't have the gun in the house at all!!!

You can get locks free from any police department. They are more than happy to give them to you. My sympathy to the family.

They just simply weren't the brightest bulb out there. It is plainly obvious. Not everyone knows right from wrong... We can say it is wrong because they are the people we point at. I just hate it when there is a total lack of compasion for the families on these boards when stuff like this happens. I think we all hate "stupid" or "dumber" people a little too easily... There are many ways they could have come into possesion of this firearm legaly and had it stored safely, it's so easy to point fingers, but almost everyone out there has a has a moment in their lives if things had gone just a little bit further they would be in the news being pointed at too. Horrible situation and horrible circumstances. Now everyone wants their heads on a stick... They are paying more than most of us will hopefully ever know. Sending them to jail isn't going to make it any different. What if they have other children, who's to take care of them. I'm not saying these may be parents that are my choice to care for other children, just hate the hatred...

Not surprising to hear someone acting so stupid from a place like Jewett City. A place where they: -Collect Elvis plates. -Think the government is monitoring their miserable lives. -Claim to have been abducted by aliens. -Wear aluminum foil helmets to deflect the mind control waves. -Blow their government assistance checks at Mohegan Sun. -Have a bunker in their backyard or house. -Are always prepping for the second coming of christ.

I am a gun owner with 3 small children. EVERY gun owner, not just those with children, needs to realize that owning a firearm comes at a cost. Part of owning a firearm is ensuring its security at whatever cost. If you feel the need to have it readily accessible and you have kids in the house, there are many alternatives such as quick safes that allow you to keep a loaded firearm accessible yet secure from children. Additionally, I would urge every gun owner, regardless of their parental status, to consider the fact that other people enter your home as guests. Ensuring the security of your firearms when you have guests or the children of guests is critical as well. Don't forget, education and training doesn't end with the pistol permit safety class, it begins there. Let us not crucify this poor family for what happened. They are clearly negligent and know it and don't need everyone here to remind them of that. They have a dead son to remind them of that. However law enforcement decides to pursue this is up to law enforcement and our armchair quarterbacking the situation doesn't help one way or the other. My hearts goes out to the family of this poor little boy. May God bless and keep this little boy and help his family to get through this unimaginably difficult time. They may have committed a crime but they are still parents suffering an incredible loss.

Maybe they could'nt afford a lock/?? Safety locks go for about $10.00..(try giving up two packs of cigaretts) if you go to most police stations they will give you a lock for free!! But we all know that everyone will blame the gun. Sorry for your loss but when will people learn responsibility as adults?? bob wrote: They made a mistake they will unfortunately be regreting the rest of their lives, they don't need criticism of hind sight from a bunch of opinionated idiots over the interent.
