I didn't say anything about driving their cars while off duty, I don't have a problem with that. But what good is a cop that lives in Baker county going to do with his car. If they did have to call him in the crimminals would already be at home watching their new tv by the time he got into town. Here are some questions for those who think they should do away with cops driving thsir cars off duty.
How many extra manhours and cops will you need to answer the over 200,000 calls off duty cops cops leaving on duty cops to handle more serious calls?
How many more robberies will take place at stores where these off duty officers frequent and park thier cars in the store's parking lots?
How many more car accidents will happen will fewer cop cars on the street? And how many more manhours and cops will you need to work the wrecks caused by speeders, redlight/stop sign runners, etc?
How many more houses will be burglerized because cop cars are not in the neighborhoods?
How much will it cost to secure and protect cop cars driven by officers that live out of county if they leave them in duval? How many mnhours will be wasted by them having to unload and load weapons and other equipment assigned to them if they are not in control of that car while off duty?
Cops pay a fee to work extra jobs to offset the cost of equipment use, even if they don't use the car except to get to the job and back..they are paying to use the cars already.
I think if you look at the off duty car s being used it is a win/win for the cop and the city. Most of the whinners about the cop cars are just picking on the cops without looking and the dollars and cents of the matter.

You're right, I drive the Dames Point bridge everyday and it is not a good place to break down. People will not get over or even slow down for a disabled car. I'm sure it's the same in other places but I see it alot on this bridge because it is so long and steep. We do need officers in construction zones. As I go by JTB and 9A I see that officer giving out tickets almost everytime I go by. Why, not because the officer is there, but because people can't slow down for just a few miles to keep worker safe. |

I agree with you and if it were up to me, every police officer out there would receive a pay raise. First of all, to all of the complainers, the police can't be everywhere at the same time. Sure, I have run across some rude ones here in J'ville but when I need them, it is nice to know they are there. The police officers in this city are far underpaid when you have the likes of Mayor Opie's spokesperson making in excess of 150K per year and a police officer making 35,000 or less. The real criminals are the lawyers and judges slapping these career criminals on the wrists and letting them back out on the street to commit more violent crime.

Waaaa!!!! Waaaa!!!, I am sure your job is so much tougher than anybody elses, in the world, our U.S. military now thats a tough job and those people truly put their lives on the line, quit trying to ride their coat tails. As far as your pay goes, that old line wont work anymore, the people of jacksonville pay cops better than anywhere in the State, has that translated to lower crime?, not hardly, we are simply asking that you do your job and quit whining, I dont blame cops for the crime in our city, it is a cultural problem, adding more cops wont fix it. |

Hey, dumbas$, I'm NOT a police officer. I just respect what they do for minimal pay. Yeah, they're really rakin' it in in Jax...WTF?!? Police officers need all the help they can get. It's not just a cultural problem. Criminals are taken off the streets, and our justice system puts them right back out there. As for the military, my husband recently retired after 22 yrs...so don't talk to me about that lifestyle...I've lived it! I'm not riding any coat tails...I wore the freakin' coat! What the fuckk have you done? Step off, beyotch! |
Once again your facts are wrong. Here is the starting pay throughout the state. Jacksonville:$38,500 after academy Orlando:$39,100 after academy Gulfport PD:$41,100 Treasure Island PD:$40,000-$61,000 Winter Haven PD:$35,609.60 to $53,414.40 North Port PD:$40,300 -$59,541 Port St. Lucie::$38,608 without experience Starting up to $43,408 with experience Daytona Beach PD:$33,628.68 - 56,956.80 Tallahassee PD:$39,282.42 -$61,004.00 Coral Springs PD:$45,361 -$61,002 Lighthouse Point PD:$47,943 Wilton Manors PD:$44,428 Village of Pinecrest:$46,800 -$62,700 Monroe PD:$40,726.36 -$42,762.68 http://www.fpca.com/fpcajobspage.htm Of course there are a few that make less than we do also. I have never complained about the salary. I took the job because I wanted to help people and catch bad guys. Would I be happy if we were paid a little more, heck ya, who wouldn't. Do I think the highest paid people should be our military, heck yeah, they deserve it. The point is you attack my brothers and sisters for not doing their job. The lengthy rap sheets these thugs have proves we are doing our job. It proves that we are arresting them but the courts keep releasing them. I have caught multiple drug dealers red handed with drugs in their hands three or more times just to have them released back out on the streets. I know that the house I spend hundreds of man hours in setting up a search warrant on will be right back in business next week, but its what I am paid to do. The only thing that bothers me worse than the courts slapping these thugs on the wrist is citizens complaining about something they don't understand. You say we make more than anyone in the state and yet that is not true. You say we don't do our job and yet last year we made over 52,000 arrests. Unless my math is wrong thats about 142 arrests a day. I would love not to spend so much time on traffic violators but the traffic homicide numbers are insane. Let it rain and all I do is go from traffic crash to traffic crash. I am more than happy in this job and I live to get bad guys off the street. Don't act like you have it all figured out unless you have been involved, something this job has taught me. To all of you who support us and pray for us, I say a huge THANK YOU! |

Health Care, Bobbie already told you part of it, long waits. The fact is, people from Canada, Britan and other countries that have paid health care are comming to the US and paying for medical care that they can not wait for. Many of the people in these countries also paying extra for health care insurance in their own countries. Britan has told expecting mothers to get a midwife and don't come to the hospital. The fact is do you really want a ferderal run health care? What happens everytime the government takes over something and runs it? Being self-employed I don't have any health care and I use to believe that government health care would be great. But after researching and listening to both sides, I don't want our government involved. I do believe that changes do need to be made. But I would rather the changes come from the doctors, hospitals and insurance companies than from the government. Ronald Reagan said it best, the best government is the government that governs the least. |

I spent four years on my BA, two years on my JD, one year as a clerk, four years in the Public Defender's Office, and eight years as an Assistant State Attorney.
There is nothing greater than sending a deserving miscreant to prison. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way. When a defendant's attorney files a motion to suppress evidence, and it's granted, I have no choice but to drop the charges. Prior arrests have no bearing in a case with no evidence. It hurts my heart to have to let someone go because a police officer performed an unlawful search, but that is the way our justice system works. Likewise, when a jury votes “not guilty” because a police officer got angry and defensive under cross examination, there's nothing to be done but move on. I have the utmost respect for our police officers, and recognize that they do a dangerous, thankless job. I'm also not saying that they necessarily don't do things by the book (although a lot of times they don't), but when a judge rules otherwise, my hands are tied. When I file a disposition notice or nolle pros they are mostly the results of three things: 1. Invalid evidence. 2. Uncooperative victims/witnesses. 3. Offense doesn't meet statutory requirements. Don't blame the SAO, blame the legal system that the people created. |

Northside Cop, I don't normally get into these conversations, but I want to say thanks for your dedication and for the thankless job you do. I have an 18 year old son who is graduating and is enrolled in a Criminal Justice program. As a mom, it scares me to death that he wants to do this work. But I am proud of the son that I raised and proud that he is like you and wants to help, serve and protect the citizens. He and you are certainly not in this for the money, and that is what makes you someone to be looked up to. I, for one, appreciate the hard work you do. And I hope someone like you will be the one training my son when it is his time to serve. I am sure he would learn a lot about how to be an honorable man from someone like you. GOD bless you Northside Cop and every other cop out there. I will say a prayer for all of your safety every day. |
I would not believe anything you or Michael Moore would say. |

Since you think you know so much you must have made a typo. Jacksonville police and fire pay into their own pension unlike state employees. |

OMG, Ronald Reagan the best president we have ever seen or will ever see. As far as healthcare goes, it is not the govts place to get involved. Healthcare should be left to the healthcare workers. The govt sticks it nose in everything now and that is what is wrong with our country today. I still think Moore is a fat slob who needs to take a shower and quit getting his advice from a bunch of peabrain Hollywood actors. |

You obviously married way above your head and educational level. |

Sounds like your speaking from personal experience with the GI Joe comment, if I did work at McDonalds, I would know at least I earn my money without crying about not getting paid enough, at least I produced something, not sitting around leaching off of everybody elses hard earned money through taxes, work that. |
