I guess many of you have never lived in NYC.
Tenement buildings typically don't have yards so it is common for people to use the rooftops as a sort of yard space or for a variety of other reasons. In some regards, it is safer than letting your children play in the streets given the traffic, number of odd balls living in the city, etc. Most buildings are only accessible to the people living there, kids on the roof is not so unusual. But that's no excuse for the kids to be unsupervised. It's just one of those things unique to NY I guess. |

If that kid is lucky enough to survive a 150 foot fall, the first thing she needs to do when she gets out of the hospital is buy a lottery ticket.

1 I agree Angel. Thank heavens this child is alive. I was a climber from the beginning of time. By the time I was 7 I was climbing everything. No tree was too high. We are talking back when steel playground equipment was mounted on the black top and monkey bars were as high as 15 ft. off the ground. The play ground monitors weren't there to prevent injury, they were there to call the ambulance when injury occured. Parents can't be everywhere. Nor should they be held accountable for every dumb action of their offspring by that age. By the age of 11, we had the independence to go off and play with friends. There were provision's such as calling home when we got to where we were suppose to be, and hourly check-ins, but we had freedoms. We also got injured from acting with reckless abandon at times, but by 11 yrs old we were old enough to understand there were consequences for our own actions. I mean come on, we are talking 5th or 6th grade. Some girls are on birth control or making pregnancy pacts. |

1 People should watch their children every minute when they are babies and toddlers. By 11 yrs old, you need to cut the umbilical cord somewhat so as not to raise a little Jeffrey Dahmer. |
