Brittney Leece was thinking back, not ahead, in the spring when she walked across the Napoleon High School stage to get her diploma.
"It was a relief, a big stress off my shoulders," said the tall, thin brunette. "I didn't have to deal with the drama and rumors any more."
Leece, 18, mother of a baby girl who is nearly a year old, has stepped forward in trying to help other teenagers avoid unplanned parenthood.
She is among seven teen parents — four girls and three boys — who are interviewed on a video that will be shown this year in area high schools. It was created by the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative, a collaborative between the United Way of Jackson County and the Jackson County Health Department.
More than 2,000 Jackson County teens will watch it during the upcoming school year.
In May, Leece and Michelle Williams, coordinator of the initiative, visited four freshman classes at Jackson High School.
"I knew a lot of kids rolled their eyes, but I answered a lot of questions and I knew it mattered to a few of them. You think about loving your baby, but you don't think about all the expenses, of staying up all night when she is sick and still having to get up for school the next morning," she said of her child, Avrey Kaelyn Leece.
Said Williams: "There is power in hearing the testimony of other teens, and Brittney has a gift for speaking. She feels passionate about sharing her story and I plan to use her a whole lot more."
Leece's parents, Tim and Sue Leece of Vandercook Lake, said they aren't surprised at her assuming a leadership role.
"She always wanted to be a second-grade teacher and I envision her standing a at podium someday. I know she was meant to do this," said Sue Leece, who caught one of Brittney's talks to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
But instead of heading to Eastern Michigan University to study elementary education, as she had planned, Brittney Leece will take classes at Jackson Community College, possibly toward the nursing program, and continue living at home.

i know the mother through high school.
i'm honestly surprised that one, she had the baby, & two, that she kept it.
i kept hearing she was going to give it up for adoption.
i'm not surprised though, that she did something that stupid.
i know what kind of girl she is,
she's definitely not suited to be a mother.

I am not hateful, I am sorry you dont understand that I am only defending your ridiculous posts. If you dont agree with what I have to say about this story, fine. But PLEASE dont make it a personal vandetta to get back at me, for dis-agreeing with me. In other words, Stop casting stones at me for what I think.
