Alright - I'm headed to the river now. Going to go canoe with my hubby and some family. A tad nervous because last time I went in a canoe, it was like 1997, and I had a tree nearly go through me going around a bend and we were pushed up against the side. There was a downed tree and I had to lay down quickly on my back while the tree went right over me. I had to roll sideways to get out of it! So, I swore off canoeing but here I am! Going out on a canoe! Wish me luck!

With my brother, he'll be 19 in January. He's massively huge. Very tall and wide. So when people see him, they see that he just acts a little funny. For Jared, he is autistic but he acts older. He has the mentality of a 5 year old but in some ways he's a teenager. Like when he sees a girl, he gets sad that he can't date but comments if she's pretty. He argues and cusses out my children because mentally he is their age. But he also will "baby proof" the house when we come over. So autism is just SO confusing. He's huge, yet he gags easily if you mention the word "food". So odd
Autism is VERY confusing! I have a good friend who's son is autistic and is behind on most things. Adapting to what works for him and making sure he stays on a schedule is the hardest part, and he's still a little guy!

With my little man, it's the ability to keep him on a schedule and strict structure on what we do. If he's not on a schedule, at times all h.ell breaks loose. I can't change his drawers around for the seasons unless he's there helping me because he doesn't know where his stuff is. I can't rearrange the furniture without him helping or he freaks out. When we moved, we had him pack his own boxes and put them in his own room so he knew where his stuff went. I made the mistake once of not involving him in this when he was 6 and it was pure h.ell for everyone involved until he knew exactly where all his stuff went. This last move 2 years ago was completely different because he had been to the new place, knew exactly where his room was, and helped pack his stuff and carry it.

When he was younger, if the schedule became out of whack for some reason, we ran the risk of complete meltdown. We still have issues, but it's easier to deal with. BUT, if it's loud situations, complete disruption of schedule, and outside factors, he will go into overload and unless we are watching closely, we still have meltdowns. We have instructed all of our family and friends on what to watch for and how to handle it. Believe me, it has made all our lives much easier, his included!

justchecking,

I forgot to add in. He 'looks normal', so for an outsider who doesn't know his situation and problems, they don't understand what's going on. Some have even suggested it's a lack of discipline and that I let him run wild. This is hardly the case!

Same goes for some of the family who even fought me on having the IEP done for him and trying to figure out what we could do to help him!

My oldest daughter needs a lot of structure and it still is not easy. They say she does not have asperger or autism but I have to wonder. She has social and emotional, and sensory issues. I got lucky that when she started pre-k she qualified for special assistance and went to the county run preschool. At that time she also had speech problems. Now she will start 1st grade Tuesday and is still on her IEP. But I want her tested again for Asperger but the Doctor said there is no need. Trying to find a new Doc. that takes our insurance. I have a friend who both of her sons have Autism with the same problems are your son has. It hasn't been easy for her either.

Rod and Mario were just talking about how Leyland is good about "taking the temperature" of his players to determine if they need an afternoon off of an afternoon game following a night game....SO, here is what I'm thinking:

It is an issue to find one for ins purposes. Quite frankly, I can't afford the visits without insurance, or I wouldn't care about which doc! Have you asked your doc for a referral or second opinion? You are more than entitled to that!

Your youngest sounds a lot like mine. I understand your issues.. believe me! The only thing oldest didn't have was speech issues. But as for the rest, I think it's always been under the surface, but it really didn't show until last year, after the emotional dealing with his dad's death and a teacher with no control of her classroom.

With my brother, it's just the opposite! He HATES to help with things and could care less if things are "just so", which is typical for autistic children. He just doesn't seem to care like other children with autism do. His main throw back is the gagging thing. If there are too many people in a room, he'll gag. If he sees someone eat, drink, or just food on the table, he gags. So frustrating. he also has such a bad temper. I can't stand it when he cusses out my children! and afterwards he'll say "No more you my friend!"

PARK TOWNSHIP -- Three swimmers were being treated for cuts and scrapes after the U.S. Coast Guard and a good samaritan rescued a group of people who got caught in a rip current today at Holland State Park.

A Coast Guard official said three of the four people were "scratched and cut up pretty well from the rocks" in the 4:15 p.m. incident

Those rescued were three women and one man who jumped into the water to try to help the struggling women. All appeared to be in their 20s, the Coast Guard official said. The crew on a Coast Guard boat pulled out three of the people while the fourth was pulled onto the pier by a good samaritan.

The state park is flying a red flag today, indicating dangerous swimming conditions, but people were going in the water anyway, the Coast Guard official said. The rip current was close to the north pier, he said.

I didn't say he wanted to help.. just that he HAS to help me.

And the only thing my oldest cares about is himself and if it effects him.. otherwise he could care less. And that is very typical.

A friend of mine always says when we are ralking about people doing something stupid "there is nothing dumber than the american public". I sometimes think he is not too far off base.

I just heard about an elderly woman who crashed her car into the front doors of a gas station at a major store in Fruitport Twp. At the scene the younger family members were talking about the incident and said "this is the second time this has happened this year". Talk about stupid! Maybe aunt Hattie should not be allowed to drive anymore. Do ya think?

It's been proven that people with Autism and Aspergers are very smart, but they have either speech or extreme social issues and have difficulties communicating with others.
My oldest is classified as EI (emotionally impaired) with Aspergers tendencies. He's an extremely bright young man when lots of knowledge of science and math (my husband works with him on math games while on car trips because that's what he likes and currently working on algebra, he's going into the 5th grade), but he has pretty bad social issues and it's extremely difficult for him to make friends his own age. His communications and speech is like someone a LOT older than his age of 9, and seems to flock to adults who don't talk down to him and he can share is 'knowledge' and learn from. On the Fly has seen in him action with one of our get togethers and can attest to this. He reads at a 8th to 9th grade level, so it can be difficult to find books that he will be interested in that aren't 'dumbed down' for him. I have to remind myself on a daily basis that he is still a kid!
Wow that sounds a lot like my son... He HATES it when people talk down to him, that's why counselling has failed so miserably with him. Every "child" counselor out there talked to him like he was 4 and he knew it and thought they were ridiculous. Now that he's been in the hospital, we have a line on some very good follow-up therapy with people who know best how to deal with kids like this.

We had it in ours at home, we installed a program from CNET downloads (free downloads that are spyware free) called Spybot search and Destroy (we use this at work as well) it removed it from ours at home.
