By law, it's supposed to be the school staff getting together to provide accommodations for a child with a disability, whether it be learning, social, emotional, physical. When a parent requests it, the school by law has 30 days to respond and set up the meeting.. What I'm getting at is, my school system has repeatedly refused to help my son for 9 years. I was curious as to what other teachers or parents with disabled kids have to say.. I think it is a bunch of garbage!! But what can you expect?? Have they given you a reason why they won't do this for him?

They've been telling me for nine years that he is very "capable", even though in kindergarten he was already exibiting signs of severe depression. They would say he didn't act like that at school. In fourth grade, he flipped out and overturned his entire desk(they're heavy) and they still said he was fine. I was told to fill out paperwork for sensory issues, which I didn't hear back from until the next school year.. only after I called to find out about it. Then I was told, "Oh, yeah, he scored kind of high on that but I wasn't sure what to do with it so I kind of hoped you'd forget about it" (this was from the school counselor in then fifth grade) Anyway, the reason I'm bringing all this out now is I'm sending my son back to school for 9th grade this year.. only because he wants to try. I wanted to keep him homeschooled another year or so. I pulled him out of 8th grade halfway through the year because he was failing everything and was suicidal. They have already tried to tell me that he doesn't need accommodations this year, or an IEP, until we "see how he does". Same ol' same ol. So if I come on here rambling about school and how P.O.'d I am, that's basically the promary focus for me for the near future-trying to get help for my son... and to let ya all know ya just might hear a little more about a certain school district in the news... to be continued...

neecer wrote: Hokey Pete you guys have been busy over the past couple of days! Sorry .. had a lot going on .. and I'm hoping things will start to slow down.. but not this weekend! Got Dad all tucked into the nursing home. He kinda raised hell today and got himself worked up over nothing. I think a lot of that had to do with being in a strange place. He was pretty calm tonight when we went and visited. It had cooled down enough that we could take him outside to sit on the patio. He hasn't seen lightning bugs in almost 10 years. The skeeters chase us in though! Ok.. here's the info on me... 35 year old married mom of 2 boys ages 8 and 9 (15 months apart), known for her redheaded fiestiness and temper (at times). Been in the same job field for over 12 years and still love it. Tis a challenge that changes daily and keeps me on my toes. Ok.. is there any other mom out there besides me who is doing the happy dance that school is 10 days away!?!? 10 days away! I got you beat. Mine start this Tuesday and I am so happy and ready fro them to go. I have the beer a chillin and ready for me to celebrate them being gone from 7:30 am until 4:00 Pm. HAPPY DANCE ALL AROUND THE HOUSE! My Stats are 36 almost 37 years old mother of 4 (17 boy,8 year old boy, 6 almost 7(Sept 1) girl ,5 year old girl). Going through a divorce after 9 and half years of marriage.

I know what you are going through. My oldest had the same problem and was failing everything. I do think there is legal action you can take to get the schools to do their job. I don't like to bad talk schools or teachers but I do know that the required tests are expensive to do and that shouldn't stop the schools (as they do get extra State funding for special needs children). My son moved to Michigan two years ago and Fennville did the tests and found out how my son was learning and put him on an IEP and now he is doing better and may just graduate on time like he should have this year. I will get some info put together for you and send it to you on Myspace. Just hang in ther help is on the way!

hi everyone! i'm very excited about all my new friends on myspace but - canadagirl, i couldn't get in yours because i had to know your last name or e-mail. just fyi...
i'm still working my way down the list of names from here so some of you will still be getting requests from me.
mama knows, iep's are exactly what my sister has done for 30 years in the milwaukee public school system. i think it's terrible what you've been told but it is so far out of my knowledge base i couldn't be of any help. BUT, if you have generic questions that might apply across states or perhaps want an insiders advice on how to "work" the system - i'd be glad to ask her...
i just got back from the dog park where a friend helped me with jack. he ran like the wind - it was so good to see!!!
well, thanks all my new friends....

A little goes a long way.. the sad thing is, I would have been happy with just a little help, and they won't give me that, so I am forced to make them do it. We are meeting with a lawyer Tues. and he's been in special ed. law for 25 years.

Thanks. I had a teacher in sixth grade(from the school in question) tell me they can make those tests turn out any way they want(spec. ed testing) so you can understand my disillusionment.

Actually, the 60s aren't too bad, either. I have to admit that I do have some issues, but nothing really serious. High blood pressure, but not too bad, controlled by medication. I do have a knee and hip that like to act up once in a while which go back to getting hit on a bicycle when I was 17. My doctor at the timetold me that I would eventually see the after effects when I got older. I am working a little bit on losing some weight as my blood pressure climbs when my weight increases, but 212 lbs. at 6' tall is not too bad. My doctor would like to see me get down to about 190 or so. A cruise control on my truck took care of my biggest problem with the knee. It gets sore after about 200 miles of holding a gas pedal in the same position!

so much of it is your genes and if you work out smartly. i didn't have either and am really fighting a battle to get back to physical health. after this wrist fracture heals i am going to have a hip replacement. my other hip will probably last only another year or so and that doesn't even begin the discussion of my knees!! on my 53rd birthday, i joined AARP - yes, call me wildwoman - never a dull moment in my life - too bad they all involve emergency rooms LOL,LOL,LOL!!! i also joined the eons - babyboomer forum. interesting site - just have to remember that i joined!!!! just kidding, i admire all of you over 40 who have kept their health, i'm workin my way back there - maybe as the bionic woman but i'll get there.
