Add to that a requirement for 100% domestic content. I remember reading some years ago about Ford running afoul of the CAFE requiremants. IIRC, Ford changed 5 parts in their big rear drive ("all-American") car, changing it's classification to "import" which put it in the "import" fleet with all the high mpg cars that they imported with the Ford name on them, putting them back in compliance.
In this particular example I mentioned Ford, but all the "American" manufacturers are doing the same thing.

Interesting, Milwaukee, home of what may be the last of the truly American made vehicles. Also appears to be home to "whateva". LOL

Incidentally, there was a period in Harley's history where the company used many foreign made parts, considered by Harley fans to be the darkest period in the company's history. Many hard core Harley lovers, to this day, refuse to buy any Harleys made during that time as those parts led to many failures on the road.

I live in GR Taz, My internet provider routes through Milwaulkee.

I believe the Harleys you are refering to were the dark days when AMF owned them.

You are attempting to compare Toyota to Chinese cars?
As far as Ford vs Toyota goes you cant be serious. Ford is asking the government to bail them out to stay afloat using my tax dollars. Toyota has $75 billion in the bank just for future technology. How do you think Toyota got so profitable? Selling junk cars like Ford does?
americans built the auto industry, you are way off, I have had many fords, chevy's, etc.
over the las 4o years, and they were great & dependable some going 300k miles. this industry has help to build this country economically also.
early imports, with excptions, were junk, but now sadly they dominate the market here, and we are paying the price now and in the future. it's true that the unions caused a lot of it, but we're all gonna suffer for it. by the way, I'm not an autoworker

The pension fund is only a fraction of Ford's problem. They have been mis-managed for 30 years. GM is even worse.
You forgot to say it's the Union's fault..

I wonder how Toyota's $75 billion in the bank compares to Ford's pension fund? They do not have that legacy cost at Toyota.
Not yet......

Why is it that if I buy a GM (small) pickup, I have to pay for A/C(std. eqipt.) when all I want is basic transportation? Why do so many "American" made cars have power door locks and windows standard (which makes the car more expensive to buy)?
Window stickers make for some interesting reading sometimes as to the assembly plant location and domestic content of the vehicle. A US assembled vehicle containing 100% US content is a rarity, if not almost non existent. Maybe if I buy a Harley-Davidson motorcycle might fill that bill. The trouble is, that Harley is not practical during our Michigan winters.
I understand that. I bought a Ford Focus in 1999 or 2000..i swear everything was standard on it even though i didnt want it...still cost a ton. Also the biggest POS i've ever owned. Got worse gas mileage than my Subaru Outback.

In 1997 I bought a floor demo Honda Civic 8 miles on the odometer...it had ZERO things in it...including no radio...i paid 6k for it. Loved that car...had to get rid of it though since putting a car seat in and out a 2 door car sucks.

Great! I'd better go buy a life-time supply for myself. The last thing I want in my tool box is Vise-Grips that are made in China!.

Do you realize how many Chinese products you already buy/own? Ever shop at a Walmart? 90% Chinese imports. You want cheap crap? It has to come from somewhere other than the USA.
