I do wish that the young folks would learn that there are cheap ways to diaper your babies. When I observe the prices of the throw aways in the stores I am appalled at how much. Heaven forbid, any of them would have to wash diapers like we did in the olden days. Go to the thrift stores and buy up old t-shirts or sweatshirts and cut them up, or any appropriate fabric. While nobody likes to give up their conveniences, there are many ways to battle high costs.

I agree with you flsr. I do wonder, however, and this is sad - do these young folks even KNOW how to use a cotton diaper?????????? Now that is sad. I would note that it good folks are giving and help out those in need. And, I hope that those who receive will return the favor when they are on their feet, as the lady in the article said they would.

Agree here too.. I used cloth! even buying the presewn cotton diapers is cheaper than disposables. but then GASP they have to pay for water, laundry soap, and electricty to wash them -and the TIME it takes... oh dear..

HEY a news 8 van just flew past my house (near Lake Odessa) wonder whats up with that ...

Hope those receiving are the givers later on.

I think it's great that some of these people are getting help. Especially the ones with children.

I think the idea of cutting up t-shirts and sweatshirts for a diaper is absolutely ridiculous though. My god, cloth diapers is one thing, but using rags, heck no. And who cares what you did in the olden days, you would've used disposable if they wwere around and you know it. Everyone is so quick to judge.

Thank God for additional services such as these, as many people due fall between the cracks of getting assistance with food from the State. More communities should have this help.

UH not so 'Olden days' my youngest is only 6-4 years out of diapers. I used cloth to save money. Disposables were available, but expensive, there is(and was) a cheaper alternative.

I am floored by the comments made by some of you! Times are hard right now, regardless if people use disposable diapers. Consider the price of laundry soap, water, electricity to use your washer, natural gas prices to run your dryer, not to mention, what if people do not have a washer and dryer to wash cloth diapers! Get a life people! I have children, one of whom wears disposable diapers. I am fortunate that my husband and I both have jobs and are able to afford GAS and groceries. I have several family members who have been at the top and because of losing jobs due to the economy, are at the lowest point of their lives. How do you know when these people started having children, they both did not have jobs. Don't be so quick to judge, and just because you use cotton diapers doesn't make you better than any one else. I am sure there has never been a time in any of your lives where any of you have ever needed help. Maybe you should stop and think, What would happen if you lost your job??

Dear Twinmommy,
I did not mean to imply that these young folks should not receive help, however, if they are receiving help they should do everything they can think of to help their own situation. These suggestions I gave were intended for dire circumstances. Evidently your own are not dire and thank God for that, but for many, they are in these circumstances, or will be soon the way the econonmy is spiraling downward. Sure, if you've got money, buy what you can. I am addressing the situations of those who don't have enough.
For your additional information. I have 10 children, born over a period of time that involved a transition from cloth diapers to throwaways. Once for a period of one week I used throwaways, but did not like the nasty disposal problem.(Another great debate). Many young women I know will not even knock the #2 into the toilet before disposing them for the trash man to have to deal with.
All this is not even referring to the cost which in relation to this article is the main point. I just checked with Family Dollar and the gal tells me their own brand is approx $8. for a pack of 20, med size. If mommy changes baby at least 5 times a day, and I hope she does, and if my math is correct, the cost is going to be roughly $64. a month. If somebody's giving me food, I'm going to do all I can to save money. BTW, if some young folks want some thrifty ideas, I know a lot of them. Just let me know.

T-shirts and rags for diapers hmmmm are t-shirts free ?
Or do they have to be purchased?
generic disposables i believe are no more expensive than cloth and yes electricity to wash and dry is an expense and has to be figured in.
The engineer has paid very big taxes when he had his job.
Why should anyone pick on him? He didn't want or attempt to LOSE his job.
Thank God for kind and compassionate non-judgemental holier than thou art people. I'll go one step further maybe food stamp qualifications need to be re-evaluated, let's think about how much a person has PAID in while he or she was blessed enough to have a job and lost it through no fault of his or her own. I remember something-- it goes like this love thy neighbor as yourself? or not?

I agree, if you can't feed your kids, stop having them until you can afford them. It is not fair to your kids or the rest of us that have to pay to take care of them.

Reasonable, Your ideas are coming from someone who is still doing okay, and I'm glad you are. People certainly should consider the prices every which way they would go. As for the washer and dryer do they have 2 pails?
I have seen, on tv, accounts of disaster situations, where the babies are in dirty diapers for God knows what length of time and the mothers screaming they need diapers. It would not occur to most that there was something else to do.

I mentioned buying them at the thrift store. This is for people who are poor enough to be in need of food. Evidently they are not "THERE" yet. Also you miss the point I am trying to make. I am trying to be helpful, while you are assuming that I am being too critcal and unloving. I, for one at least, on this forum, am not overlooking that a person can go from doing well to practically homeless in a very short period of time. To you who are doing so well, how many paychecks are you from foreclosure and homelessness. If I didn't love my neighbor I would slough off my opinions and pass on. There is help for poor people, both from others and their own selves, and if you come up with some helpful ideas it does not mean you don't have love for them.

You didn't use rags for your kids, why should I? Are you giving up your conveniences to help others? Go back to your wash tub, scrub board and clothes line. Send me your washer and dryer.

I have the right to have kids. Are we going to legislate the number of kids people can have based on income? Kids aren't always planned and abortion is not always an answer.

Should we legislate that only rich folk can have kids? I think you need to love your neighbor and not be so judgemental.

Maybe the kids can just be left outside so that they can cope without a diaper. My kids deserve the same kind of care that yours do. Show a little compassion!

my thought too. why should someone else pay to raise your kids. learn to eat at home, use cloth diapers, stop smoking and drinking (beer & soda) eat left overs, walk to where ever is close etc... 2548
I hope that you are never in need. Maybe someone can determine what you need and don't need. Stop going out in the winter and you won't need a coat. Stay in bed, you won't need a car. Eat out of a dumpster and save money on food. GET REAL!

I have children from ages 16 to 2 years old. I have tried cloth diapers and had Dydee service for my first and found it to be inconvienent and let alone a huge hassle. Going places and have to bag a dirty cloth diaper, disgusting and not mention the fact most clothes were ruined because other people did not know how to properly diaper with cloth diapers. Oh believe me I have struggled, much more than you would have ever known. I HAVE had my home in foreclosure and I have had MANY times without food in my home, crying wondering how am I going to feed my children today, let alone tomorrow. I never had food stamps or other welfare, I had kind family members who would help us out if we needed. I remember counting change from piggy banks to buy eyeglasses for my child. I thank the Lord everyday for all the hard and good times we have had in our lives. As my husband and I have gotten older, we have been fortunate to grow and have better jobs than we did when were young and so in love and decided to start a family immediately. We donated to a food bank this week, we donate money to our church. I consider my husband and myself to be very generous people, we are more than willing to lend a helping hand when asked. I guess the point I was trying to make is I don't judge people by the diapers they use, the issue is that children are hungry, people are hungry, we don't have jobs in Michigan. I applaud the people who are not afraid to be honest that they need help and get it. The very first thing you start out with is slammming these young people for using disposal diapers!!! Then others saying why do they have 3 children, hello, Who cares it is none of your business!!!! The real issue is that this country is in a downward spiral, and we need to take care of our OWN people!!! Not criticize!!!
