I want to be excited about this, but I have my reservations..... Daimler tried to merge w them & it was, by all accounts, less than succesful. Probably a better proposition for Mopar than the General. Does make we want to buy more GM stock, however. Think in 2 or 3 yrs I would be sad if I hadn't invested in more. Things are rocky now, but conditions will improve, although GM will not be the same company it is now. And that would be a good thing! Needs to get leaner & meaner.

They would have a much better chance at being profitable if they could dump the UAW completely. We'd have a better chance of getting all our jobs back without the UAW too.

Good Day,

As predicted, it begins...

Diamler has been voicing for a while that they are considering getting out of their relationship with Chrysler. However, I have my doubts that this merger will solve any problems for either company. What is next? Toyota - Ford? Actually, that might be a better merger than GM - Chrysler. As it is known, Toyotas are made with more American components than either GM or Ford. So that could concievably help not only Ford by producing a better product, but also stimulate the auto supply market if Toyota were to take over and say that Ford had to play by their rules. Which in turn could mean more jobs in that sector. Hmmm...

I saw this coming years ago. Its a wonder they all three haven't done it as of yet. They are out-pricing themselves and fail to see it.

Do you think all these mergers are good for our economy? I can remember when Union Bank was taken over by NBD who was taken over by First Chicago who was taken over by Bank One who was taken over by Chase.

Many of these now very large organizations employ hundreds of thousands of employees and have positioned themselves so that their failure would be so disruptive to our economy that they are not going to be allowed to fail despite their shortcomings.

We need a good ole trustbuster like Teddy Roosevelt.

2 lame ducks does not always equal 1 successful company. I think you should clean up your own house before you try to assume someone elses.

This will not and should not make it pass the unions and government regulatory bodies.

My guess is that GM will buy Chrysler. Chrysler is no longer a viable auto company. My guess would be that GM would phase out the Dodge and Chrysler Truck and Car lines and just keep the Jeeps. Jeep owners are a dedicated lot. For many of them it's a Jeep or nothing else. Besides that's lots of manufacturing capability for a discount price.

Now Ford wants to sell its 33% stake in Mazda! Yikes. About the best thing they have going for them. I can see Land Rover & Aston Martin. Two utterly ridiculous purchases in the 1st place. Must have been smokin crack w Ken Lay on that one. But Mazda? Only profitable arm of the Blue Oval @ this juncture. Mopar wants to sell Viper for $50 million. For you & me a lot of money. For them, chump change. GM looking to sell Hummer, good move, to the Indians. Not the casino Indians, the ones who build the Mahindra tractors on the subcontinent. Thinking Mazda would probably be better off w/o Ford, as Subaru is w/o GM's 8% stake. Now Toyota has 15% of Subie. Best for both entities. What a world. How can you keep track?

I would have agreed w you 100% a few months ago, but now, not so sure @ all. If you would have told me a "Republican" (he really ISN'T) President would ok the purchase of Bear Stearns, Fannie & Freddie, & AIG I would have thought you were insane. Same Prez wants the government to take over other banks, too, for our protection, of course. Jeeeeesh! A Mopar/GM union would amount to little compared to this insanity. So much for free enterprise, competition, & capitalism, I guess.

Once again the auto company are caught with there pants down. In the good years instead of investing on themselves they concentrated on the comp.Buying up foreign car companies last couple of years they had to sell them at a huge loss . Building for the rich .Cars so out of price . And people spending their life saving to keep up with movie stars .come on 90k for the new vette . there all over priced

If you use GMAC for any banking, they are not FDIC insured. If they are doing as poorly as this article reports, who's to say that they won't go under like the rest of the financial institutions that recently have? We are getting our money out.

Actually, for any banks that you have savings in, you should double check to make sure that the money in your account is FDIC insured, don't just assume that they are. I think credit unions have a different insuring body, but I don't know what it is.
