Oh yeah that wonderful film Eve's Bayou.
Anyone see it?
What a stupid **** comment. Who cares if you're a Samual L. Jackson fan or not? We're discussing the fact that Michigan lost out on this lucrative deal. Nobody cares who was gonna star in the movie! Anyway, Michigan blew it and this movie is gonna be made whether you're a SLJ fan or not!!

Folks.... the same idiots that voted for Granmole are going to vote for Barrak Hussein Obama in November.

More fun to come.... like Jenny, maybe Obama will blow us away too.

By the way... where is Levin and Stabmenow? Michigan is in the toilet and we don't hear a peep from either of them- I guess they can't handle the heat...

Too bad for Jennifer Granhom. No matter how hard she tries (she went to Hollywood right out of high school and go no further than tour bus guide) she just can't seem to land a role in a movie.

Such much for being blown away huh? Looks like this film was blown right out of the State! I was never a real supporter of this Film Incentive Act because I knew problems like this would occur. As was said before, nice job legislature, nice job.
Instead of incentives, like having to apply for reimbursement of expenses, why not just simply give them a simple tax break? One where they do not have to file all kinds of paper work? Where they simply apply for some sort of card that precludes them from paying the full tax rate. Why involve the beuacracy? Crazy. Some pencil pusher will almost always find something wrong and sink the project! Simply issue them a card, possibly date sensitive, that they can swipe when making purcahses that would change their tax rate? Or some sort of card, like a liscence, with a date sensitive stamp on it to preclude the true tax rate. This all could have been handled so much better. Why take money out of the pockets of Michiganders to pay, or finance their movies, for them when instead, they simply could have given them a tax discount that would not rely on yours and my tax dollars? It would be easy enough to implement without much if any added cost to businesses. Just simply make sure receipts are kept and handed into the State. Like any ohter business. That would help to protect against fraud.

Not sure why everyone is bashing the state for the fact the producers decided to bail on their project in Grand Rapids. Film companies are all over the state as I write and they seemed to have no problems getting through all the "red tape".
The actual application is a mere 4 pages and is quite simple to complete. The film office will literally hold your hand and take you through the process so it is laughable that people are quick to blame the state when it is clearly not their fault. This particular company chose to film elsewhere..... if they choose to film at all.

Swiping a card?? How dumb are you? How is that easier? How much would it cost to fit EVERY location in the state where a member of the production company *might* make a purchase a card reader? That is the dumbest idea I've ever read.

The fact is the process is SIMPLE. This particular company chose not to film in Michigan. Let me know when you see the film on the big screen. Doubtful it will ever get made. That IS the nature of the film making business.

While I may agree that filmbuffs post was off topic, I need to ask
How lucrative was this "lucrative deal"?
Are not many, many films and TV shows made in Canada because it costs so much less?
Why was Michigan in consideration?
Could it be tax breaks?
Now between you and me the state is not going to "write off" that lost revenue. You, I, your neighbors are going to pay for it.
Somehow I take issue with paying a company to come to the state in order to bring in low paying jobs.
Great we lost out on some low end deli revenue and some lodging. Don't you think that they would also have "negotiated" better rates or film credit in place of payment?
Paying a person to hang out with you and be your friend only works as long as you keep paying.

If you're proposing a "West Detroit" transformation of sorts for Grand Rapids, it is you that may as well give up the faith. The status quo isn't going to allow it happen.

Keep your commie/Kwami dreams to yourself please.

I guess that when Granmole said "...you're going to be blown away" she was referring to the businesses and residents being blown away to other states. Congrats, Queen Granny, you've accomplished at least one thing you promised us. Please go back to Canada and "help" them instead.

Let's talk about old man Levin. That guy has been in the Senate for at least 4 or maybe 5 terms and I personally would like to see just what he has done for the State of Michigan. Where are our military bases, our Federal Reserve Bank, our IRS processing center, etc etc. I don't the guy has done much of anything for us given the fact he has seniority in the senate.

What can you expect from Debbie? What a nobody.

Jennifer Granholm. Didn't she retire just after the last election?

When you look at some of our elected officials from governor down to mayor you gotta wonder if that is all we have left in the State to choose from.

You are clueless--the film industry has brought in BILLIONS to Canada in the last ten years and continues to do so. At any given moment there are 10 or more movies filiming in Toronto--filling up hotels, restaurants, spending money in stores, paying taxes, etc. What plan do you have that will bring more money into the state??

I've already expressed my opinion on other topics about the movie industry . I am glad they won't be doing it. Someone said something about massive economic benefit .Massive? Mediocre at best. Keep Hollywood in Calyfornia not in Grand Rapids.
