Are you smoking crack? "Keep the focus on housing and education" - notice how every time Granholm speaks, there are all kinds of flowery promises and rhetoric but nothing specific that she is doing. Almost six years of task forces, commissions, and blue-ribbon panels to study every problem, and no real leadership from her. Granholm is a joke. She is clueless and she should be recalled. She and her ignorant supporters and union cronies have driven the state into the ground and attacked corporations, then demanded that those same corporations do business in this state. You can't demand that a business provide jobs to people in a state - that is what the Soviet Union did. If I owned a business in this state, I would be looking for ways to get out of Michigan immediately due to the suffocation from taxes, regulation, and vicious attacks from our own Governor. What a fool she is. Anyone who supports her is either delusional or ignorant - or both.
Education like the 25% graduation rate for Detroit? We don't need her help.

The market has been working. Haven't you seen the results. Do you really think Granholm forced or enticed these financial companies to lend out money for less than it cost them? Granholm doesn't have any influence with Bear Sterns, UBS, Deuitch Bank. This sub-prime lending started out as a means for builders and developers to get some really cheap cash, build the properties and then sell them at a huge increase thus making a fortune. THAT IS the "market" at work. And the sub-prime lending was extended so "investors", meaning regular people trying to make money off "investing" in homes, could borrow money CHEAP and resell at a profit. THAT is the "market" at work.
The "market" WORKING is how we got here in the first place. Does anyone here remember the savings and loan crisis that Neal Bush started. Yes the brother of George W. Bush.
I've seen this three times in my own life time. THREE TIMES in one life time that is not over yet. What you are seeing IS the "market" at work. Not the way it's supposed to or was intended to work, just the reality of how it does work because making money is no longer enough. We now have to see if we can stand with the big boys and have more money than 5 generations could possibly spend.
The market will work in the end but the govt. needs to stay out of the way. It is the regular people that drive this economy. As soon as the banks go through their correction and pull back on their practices we will even out. C'mon, you really think that Congress or the State has done anything that works in the end?

And one more thing. The high fuel prices while the profits of the oil companies have surpassed ALL profits of ALL companies in the entire history of business, even accounting for inflation, while they continue to get MULTIPLE MILLIONS in tax (payer paid) relief IS the market at work. So those who bow to the market god suck it up and continue to bring sacrifices to the market god's alter.
In terms of per unit sale, their profit is not out of line. They sell a lot of units. North and South Dakota has a reserve of oil that is enormous and will bring the cost down even without OPEC influence. Now watch the Liberal Fascist try and stop drilling there too.

Wow, such anger. "Whasever" - under which rock have you been? "Rick" called Bush an idiot and you said "based on what?" Have you been in some experimental underwater community these last seven years? Good thing this is such a "Christian" area or the posts would really get nasty.
These comments can be entertaining but the whole "Granholm is to blame for everything" is getting old.

Maybe if she worried about the job situation here she wouldn't have to worry about all these people loosing their jobs. My boyfriend got laid off from his job in October and has been looking for a new one since the day he got laid off and his unemployment ran out will they extend it? No. Yeah, he could drive 20miles to work at McDonalds and make $7 an hour and then turn around and put his whole entire pay check into his gas tank. It's not worth it. Luckily we don't have kids or a house. I feel bad for the people that do.(I voted for DeVos)

People amaze me. Do you honestly believe that all the people losing their homes are nothing more than lazy or greedy people who wanted the big bad house that cost so much more than they could ever afford especially with their insane credit card habits?

Folks there are many people like my own family that are having problems.

How about this for being lazy and greedy.

My husband and I bought our first home in March 2005. I was a stay-at-home mom. My husband an electronic engineer and computer technician.

My husband made 45k a year. That is not including his fully paid health and dental insurance by the company he worked for.

Our over-priced purchase? 115,000.00 home. Our payments $865.00 a month.

This was a simple 165.00 more a month than we were paying for the run down, beat up, house we were renting.

We have no credit cards. We have no credit card debits. We have no car payments. We drive a very hot, speedy, 1996 Ford Windstar (doesn't that get you excited?).

Then my husband was diagnosed with cancer. He went through 2 major surgeries and in between those surgeries suffered a blood clot in his leg and his lung.

We are currently struggling just to scrape by. If it weren't for the internet and extra money that we make this way, we wouldn't be.

We have hit a couple of HUGE bumps in the road and gotten a little behind on our mortgage payments. We were once very close to being in the works for foreclosure. We barely pulled out of it by the scum of our teeth!

No, we don't have one of these insane mortgage loans. Thank goodness for that, that we were knowledgeable enough to pay attention to what was offered to us, and to hunt around.

Now, why am I knot whining and crying about our problems... Well, we kind of set ourselves up for it. By me not working, or working on education, since 1999, I'm having trouble finding work.

But, my point is, how many of the people that you all are complaining about are in similar situations to my family?

Don't walk around blindly assuming that the many people of our communities that are having a very rough time right now are nothing more than people who bought expensive housing, have thousands upon thousands of dollars in credit card debt and are driving around in beautiful brand new vehicles.

Generally, I do not believe the posters you are writing about are applying their opinions about people like you. Some people just have bad luck from time to time. Fight through it and you will have fond memories of the struggle. I can only speak for myself, that I have too struggled on and off for years especially in the 90's. New England had a real estate crash and everyone lost money. Same as today here in Michigan. I moved back and had to start all over with wife and kids. You will make it if you keep at it. Don't give up and don't wait for the govt. to help. It is a waste of precious time. Good Luck and keep at it.

Ahh, the smell of irresponsibility being rewarded. That's a great message to our kids, Jenny. Can't afford it? No problem - the Government will make sure that you can. How about teaching them this concept, oh fearless leader - if you can't afford it then you don't get it! gasp!! Did I just dare suggest that you don't deserve something just because you breathe in the US? Why yes, I did. I'm responsible, Jenny - I saved cash for my home. I paid cash for a used car. I pay cash for everything. I don't have the big TV and the digital cable and the SUV and the McMansion. I didn't earn any of them, so I do without. What a strange concept in this liberalized (progressive is the new word) world we have, but it is a solid concept that teaches the types of things kids need to get this nation and especially Michigan back on track - a positive work ethic.
