Are the cops so hung up on their power trip that they can't tell the differance between an 8 year old and an ADULT?!!! I speak with respect for the cops, as my dad was one. But it seems to me the standards have dropped over the years. Thats why dad retired early from the force.( so he told me before he died). I have friends who are cops, 2 serve in wyoming, another who is a firefighter there. My cousin is a state trooper in Georga, and my brother is a patrol deputy in Gladwin county. Even they tell me that sometimes things get out of hand and some of the guys on the force are on powertrips and cannot handle the rush of the pursuit. I just hope the kid is not tramatized by this, and I hope the officer involved has learned something so that it will make him a better officer. We need good cops. But I think these kinds of reports to a LOT of damage to their reputation, to the point where even a small report, an incidental report, hurts the reputation of the people we pay good money to protect the peace.

The police were told to look for what? A black male, 5'6, 130 lbs. The kid definately looks like he weighs that, is bald like the perp and ran when they spotted him 25 yards away. I guess the police did the right thing. As for not walking him home, geeze, they were still looking for a nut with a knife. What a great guy HE is, leaving that little boy and running away again. It takes a lot of courage, or just stupidity to admit being such a revolting human being.

He ran, if you run theu should be able to do anything to you. If you run then you have something to hide. They should not have to apologize. You should for not teaching your son the right and wrong. You don';t run from police.

don't run from the police. it's that simple. ths kid wasted their time by running and also maybe they could have got the real perp.

Let me add another thought here. Where the heck was the mother? What kind of looney leaves her 8 year old playing outside, without adult supervision, in THAT neighborhood? Every day it seems we hear about people being shot there, and of gang activity and drug dealers on the streets. Where the heck was SHE? And please don't tell me it is safer during the day. Her neighbor was running around the area with a knife, for pete's sake.

PARENTS NEGLECT TO TEACH THEIR CHILDREN THAT WHEN A POLICE OFFICER GIVES A COMMAND, THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO OBEY. CHILDREN ARE NOT TAUGHT TO OBEY AND THINK THEY CAN GET AWAY WITH NOT OBEYING AS THEY DO WITH THEIR PARENTS. THEY DON'T RESPECT AUTHORITY.

I hear what you are saying..BUT..even "kids" can be very dangerous. This 8 year old, does look pretty large for his age. They didn't shoot him, he just drew a gun. No harm done... Better for the cops to be safe than sorry. How many cops are "traumatized" also? Who can blame the cop for being safe rather than sorry. He DID NOT harm the boy... SIZE doesn't matter anymore! I am 68 years old and smaller than this "boy". Age vs size...???? The police are "out there" and have to protect themselves....but bottom line...he did NOT shoot the kid. Just was protecting himself..and wouldn't we all do the same???? My son is a police officer...lost a friend, also an officer killed by a "kid".... That mother should be thankful that her child learned what could have happened had he followed his father's footsteps...

I beleive the stigmation of the fact that the officers said "FREEZE" would prompt the reaction of the child. The are trained to treat a person with caution, however, given the neighborhood gives the police the right to provoke. This should have never happen, and given the proper legal help this family should be compensated for this tragic and tramatized situation.

In that neighborhood, the police are yelling "Freeze" day and night. The police who patrol that area should be additionally compensated in the form of battle pay.

Does anyone know what time of day this happened. Was it dark out already. When the police officer said freeze, why did the boy run. He should have stopped and talked to them and explained what he was doing there. Instead he ran. The police officer was doing his job.

Another case where the cops are lying trying to cover thier mistake. I dont believe the cops about much of anything anymore. They are always lying. A cop was caught treaspassing the other day gave three lies as to the reason he was there. he was politely told to leave or be arrested himmself. The courts giving the cops permission to lie just opened the door of corruption and the cops use this dishonesty daily!

Right away you want to sue. I think the police should have explained to the mother what happened. Then they could have found out if the child was being properly supervised. Most of all they should have explained to the kid. The young man is already growing up in a bad neighborhood. He deserves a chance to understand that police officers are his friend not his enemy. For crying out load he is only 8 years old.

And the fact he was told to "FREEZE" and prceeded to take off running means nothing. If anything this kid probably allowed the perp to get away by wasting the officers time. Get off the "All they seen was black S**t, I am really sick of hearing people play the race card for everything.

Just how was he raised that the sight of a police officer means "run" at age 8? When I see a cop, fireman, or really just about anyone who says "hey you - stop right there" I tend to stay there and see what they want. But then, I may have been raised by a mom AND a dad who both believed that the law was there to protect the innocent.

The kid is a product of his environment. His bro probably got whacked in the head with a billy club, and he wants no part of that. I'm almost certain that he is not as fortunate as we are. It is sad that the kids in the city don't stand a chance at a normal life. Maybe someday he will grow up to be the mayor of Detroit.
