Is it not a complete shame that "children" (these poor kids are just starting to really experience life) are shot dead over the stupidest things. Do these "gangs" really think that their behavior makes them "better than others". It is shear stupidity and anyone who is involve in one must be a complete and utter idiot. I feel for the family and friends of this young man. My heart goes out to them.

Growing up without a "daddy in the hood" is true. But the lack of daddy's DOES NOT exist just in the hood. Look at the rate of divorce everywhere. I was a divorced mom and it was difficult to raise them but luckily they turned out good kids. You nailed it on the head when you said family structure is officially dead but it exists everywhere. What a sad state our country has come to. This has become the era of "it ain't my fault".

If they just all had diplomas none of this would happen.
Are you really stupid enough (obviously you must have a degree) to tell us that there is no crime in the population with a degree????? Get you head out of your ****. This is a sad unfortunate event. EVERYONE needs to responsible for their actions

O my gosh! You said he told you he promised nothing bad was going to happen? Sounds like he knew full well trouble was right around the corner.
Ignorance and judgement surrounds us. Ever think that the reason he assured his family that nothing was going to happen was because he was going into a less than desirable area after hours?

25% of white children grow up w/o dady, 50% for Hispanics, 60% for blacks. This a natural outcome for a society that is failed to create positive male role models and feminized and PCed the raising of children. Our society fails to create personal responsiblity and we increasingly expect the government to be the provider, parent and role model. Our society slowly slips to Socialism where the self reliant positive family structure is a quaint throwback to our nations founding ideals...how pathetic we have become.

because he didnt go home and sleep , he wanted to live a thug life instead of a life to help his child and mothers baby, so all you other hoodlums need to take notice of this and turn your life around.

did i just read this was the second time he was shot, damb he must of thought he was bulletproof, how much bragging did he do about getting shot the first time, probably looked at it as a badge of honor, instead of learning from the first time he got shot he went out and got shot again but this time he cant brag about it,sounds like this was a kid who had no adult guidance in his life what a shame .im sure we will be hearing more about this as other little punk kids will want to take revenge , just remember this guys the bullets that killed your friend can kill you to.

ya know, all of you that are being so judgemental are home sitting in your nice homes and nice jobs should put sometime reaching out to the young people in this city and give them a helping hand instead of turning your noses up at them. It takes a village to raise a child.

What about the adults there? They sould be watching their kids like hawks. They (the parents)need to be the role models. They should call the police EVERY time someone does something wrong or they see something out of place. When the police come tell them what you saw! If you get threatened, call the police again! If you can, get a CCW. Start a neighborhood watch. Take back your neighborhoods from these nothings.

This kid was an adult and a parent.(Even though he was 17, he became an adult when he had a child himself). He failed in his duty to be a role model/ parent to his child by using poor judgement.

Once again to his friends, sorry for your loss.

I've just read over 140 comments, most of them by very ignorant people.
If you knew him, please tell something about him. It might just shut up a few of the people reading this.
What high school did he go to?
Was he a good student?
Did he have a job, or a part-time job?
It would be nice to know about these things so some of the ignorant white people would drop the "thug" tag that has already been assumed.

I grew up in the heights. Ran the streets and got into more than my share of trouble. Nobody gave me a helping hand or a chance. I earned it and worked my way out. I now have and have had a nice job and home.
This person went looking for a fight and lost. Only "YOU" can make the change in your life. It's not about being given something, it's about earning it, stepping up and taking care of business.

Guess these guys should get a life and stop hanging outside all night and going places where they are just asking for it. I agree., another thug off the streets. Neighbor who was fighting with the guy across the street should have been shot too, along with the guy across the street,3 down.

I'm here sitting in my nice home because I have worked my **** off all my life instead of hanging out on the streets at 2AM. It doesn't take a damn village to raise a child, just parents who care enough to do it. Reach out to most of these "kids" and you get your hand whacked off. He chose to put himself in that situation. Life is all about choices, and nobody is to blame for those choices except the one making them. Not my fault some people make the same bad choices over and over and over.

You will notice that my posts, and many others, included nothing about race, nothing.

We know what was reported and what a few other posters who knew him have posted.

There are things about this man's life that stand out that helps us put together a picture of him. These are not good things. He made aquaintance with known gang members. This wasn't the first time he was shot. He, at 17, already had children but was not married. He put his life in danger at 2am in a rough part of town into what was described as a dispute regarding gangs or gang activity.

I do not care what HS he attended. I will give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that as a father he was employed ful-time. Should he not be employed full-time, or not be self employed, I will add that as negative information about him.
I feel I'm being generous giving him the benefit of the doubt because if he did have gainfull employment, he'd either had been engaged in such or be home sleeping.

People can and will make an opinion on someone based on their first impressions without ever actually meeting someone. This is why it is important to try to make the impression you give to others good.

So, there was a feud between two people and they both called in "back up" and that is why this young man was there; he was someone's "back up"??? Does he have a badge?

My heart and prayers go out to the families suffering from this.

To the people who are hollering that the parent(s) should have made sure he was inside...

He was 17 years old. Try calling the police to force your 17 year old to be at home once. At 17 years old the police will do nothing.

Fact of the matter is, once your child reaches this age, the best you can do is be supportive, loving (tough love included), and hope that all you've done to raise your child properly will help your child to be a responsible adult, because your child is no longer a child.
