<quoted text>Only 50 mpg? I get better than that with my '97 Saturn and with my motorcycle. Why would I want to pay a buck more a gallon for fuel to put in a smelly German diesel, with zero acceleration, and that costs big bucks to fix every time it breaks. No Thanks!
As for drilling in the States, I'm all for it except that the drilling we do already is so messed up it's unbelievable. The Alaskan Pipeline is only running at 70 or 80 % and most of that oil gets sold to both Japan and China. It's cheaper for the oil companies to sell that oil and buy the same product from the middle-east. Needless to say I'm a little bit skeptical about how drilling more in the US is really going to help the consumer, not to mention the years it will take to see any oil from new wells drilled today.

Over 50 mpg in a Saturn?? What you smoking????

The price of gas hasn't changed from $3.85 in my town for two weeks now despite continuing decreases in oil. Of course, the one day in the last two weeks that oil goes up by $3.50 a barrell gas jumps the next day at the pump by .14 per gallon. I'm still waiting for the math to see how oil can drop $10 a barrell in a week and the price at the pump doesn't change one bit.

Ask any decent Geologist. They know. I know. If we didn't know how it was produced/generated, we wouldn't have a clue where to even look geologically speaking. And didn't you say it was a renewable resource? If you say you don't know where it comes from and how it is produced how can you say it's a renewable resource? I'm not trying to beat you up Batch, it's just that you are contradicting yourself on this one.

Right now? Marlboro Lights. My 1997 Saturn SL1 with the 1.9 liter SOHC engine and 5 speed manual transmission regularly gets between 50 and 55 mpg in spring summer and fall (I drop to the mid 40's in the winter). My 1996 Harley Sportster 883 gets 55 - 57 mpg.

I am all for drilling now but stepping up our research on better ways of fueling our automobiles. And for the soccer moms who drive those escalades and excursions to get groceries and take junior to band practice well...that's just plain stupid. My car gets 32 mpg and it's a 4 cyl camry. Plenty of room. But I know all the yuppies are out there whining that they NEED their suv to feel safe- that pure BS.
Leave the soccer moms alone. They are kinda cute. My experience has been that hubby many times wants the big SUV. To tow his boat or motorcycles on the weekend. Many of the soccer moms would prefer the minivan. Easier to park & handle. Mom just gets the "pleasure" driving the tank during the week to haul the kids. This is not class warfare. We are all in this together. I am sure they cringe @ the pump like you & I do. We have to break the habit. We will. Market will see to that. Not w/o some gnashing of teeth & wringing of hands in the meantime, however. SUV sales are already in the dumper.

Thanks. I was also quite amazed by his posting. Made no sense whatsoever. I am getting used to that on this board, however, so I guess I was not totally surprised.

That's the EPA rating. Complaints from drivers to the contrary, EPA ratings are low for anyone who actually drives in a manner that will get the best gas mileage. My 1991 Chevrolet S-10 and my 1998 GMC Sonoma pickups were both rated by the EPA at 27 mpg highway. Both pickups consistently got over 33 mpg on a trip. In fact, more then once I got 26 mpg driving locally!
Incidentally, the S-10 was still attaining this mileage just prior to being totalled with 142K miles on it. The Sonoma stll gets that mileage with 116K miles on it.

Ok Ok I surrender..my 96 cavalier has 230,000 miles on it and gets 30 mpg and never had engine work. Plugs have 110,000 miles on em and oil changed every ...whenever I feel like it...runs great.

I never said we shouldn't drill now. My point was just that we wouldn't see those benefits for some years to come. We should be drilling all over the place so that oil burden is lessened for our children and beyond.
guess I misread your intent.....I do think there would be at least some benefit short term regardless of refining just from replacing foreign oil with that drilled in NAmerica even given the present refining capacity, even if prices are still high it is money kept in NAmerica. I also agree that refining capacity has to be increased, conservation efforts stimulated, new sources of renewable energy developed....
