Why are we switching to DTV?

An important benefit of the switch to all-digital broadcasting is that it will free up parts of the valuable broadcast spectrum for public safety communications .

Please, please, could someone traslate all this into language a somewhat intelligent viewer can understand? I feel sorry for the elderly people who will wonder why they can't watch their shows anymore. I think this is a big rip-off and should have been implemented without making people purchase or lease special boxes.

Anne - I don't understand your question. Translate what? The message has been delivered about as clearly and unambiguously as it can be delivered, to the elderly and everyone else. Anyone "somewhat intelligent" should know this backwards and forwards by now.

We're ditching a 53-year-old broadcasting technology, one that wastes buckets of electricity and spectrum space, and replacing it with a technology that works about a billion times better.

You need a converter box because your old TV works on that obsolete technology that we're ditching.

Its time to come into 2008/2009 technology instead of watching TV with rabbit ears like its 1958. I understand some people on fixed incomes may not be able to afford cable TV but the converter box fee is a lot cheaper than paying $100 a month for cable. I bet you still have a rotary phone too.

Man, the government just wants to have the ability to control what your eyes see. Don't be fooled, turn off the television!
