We bought our house in February not knowing it was going to cost over 4,000.00 to get rid of the pests. I have tried several agency and no one will help us get rid of them. We have over 1,000 living in our upstairs and my daughter cant even have her room there because of them. I know just what Mary Lou is going threw I have 4 children myself and dont feel safe. Homeowner insurance wont help cover getting rid of them. People just getting by cant afford the extra to get rid of bats and anyone buying a house should be told if there are any animals living in the house.

HI LUKE, MY KIDS WERE VERY AMAZED TO SEE YOUR STORY OF THE BATS. WE TOO WERE INFESTED ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO. I WORKED WITH A BIOLOGIST FROM EITHER THE BUFFALO ZOO OR THE SCIENCE MUSEUM. I THINK IT WAS THE ZOO, MOST LIKELY. I DID LEARN ALOT ABOUT THEM AND THEY WERE NOT AS BAD AS WE LEARNED THROUGH WATCHING DRACULA..........
I HAD AN ESTIMATE OF ABOUT AT LEAST 2000 MOMMIES AND HER BABIES. IT WAS A NEW YORK BAT SPECIES. I KEPT THEM UNTIL THE VERY BEGINNING OF SEPTEMBER, IN WHICH I HIRED A WILDLIFE MAN (PROFESIONAL) FROM ALDEN NY, FOR $40.
WE HAD TO SIT TO SEE WHERE THEY WERE COMING IN. THEY CHECKED US OUT AND DID A CIRCLE 8 AROUND OUR HEADS IN THE BACKYARD. AFTER WE KNEW WHERE THEY WERE GETTING IN, HE INSTALLED A "ONE WAY BIRD NETTING". ONCE THEY WENT OUT THEY COULD NOT GET BACK IN. IT DID WORK. BUT THEY WERE REALLY ANGRY, WE COULDN'T GO NEAR THE HOUSE FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS, THEY WERE NASTY BECAUSE OF THEIR YOUNG ONES. ONE THING I KNEW, I DIDN'T HAVE ANY BUGS, MAYBE IT WAS REALLY A FAIR TRADE???
IF THE WOMAN WOULD WANT TO CONTACT ME, I WOULD BE HAPPY TO GIVE HER ANY INFO SHE MAY NEED. MY EMAIL ADDY IS:
anisecookie7@cs.com.
TELL HER I WISH HER THE BEST.
THANKS, NANCY HIGGINS OF LANCASTER NY

Bats like racoons as you know can carry disease, particularly rabies. My suggestion is to involve the DEC as it is a health issue in your neighborhood. Also you might try and find out if there was a bat problem before you moved in that the "sellers knew about". If you can prove that the sellers knew the bats were an on going problem, you might be able to get some recourse through that avenue. If all else fails....a couple of nasty old stray tom cats would probably do the trick......hehe...good luck!

That's nice.. Bats fly all over the place at night in Cheektowaga at my work. Is this something I should be reporting? Not trying to get histoplasmosis because of these flying rodents..

You do know that bats are vary good to have around your house because these critters eat up all the bad old nasty misketos and outher bugs that do not mix well with people. why dont you ask about getting some bat houses and try to gat them to go to them instead of your homes, Give them a house to live in and just maybe thay wont whont to live in yours.

Really people, get a freaking grip!

How many people have you ever heard of contracting rabies, from any source, not just bats, in Western New York?

I've lived here all my life, seen bats inside and outside the house where I live, and never once been bitten, nor have I known anyone who has been bitten!!!

Luke, The bats didn't come back. They never left. Someone told me in Fl. they put a big tent over the house and exterminate the bats because of the health risk. Sounds like a good idea to me.

We have 3 that come out around 8:00 pm and fly laps around our pond every night. I understand that one bat can eat several thousand mosquitoes in one evening. I am not sure where these three live ( in my attic or the neighbors ) but they are pretty cool to watch fly around the pond. Again there is only 3 of them, not thousands.

The bats are in the belfry
the dew is on the moon
where are the arms that held me
and pledged her love before
and pledged her love before

And it's such a sad old feeling
all the fields are soft and green
it's memories that I'm stealing
but you're innocent when you dream

You have too much time on your hands. Since you are on several forums, I am guessing you are from this area. If you find our issues that important, maybe you should move back here and tackle some of these issues first hand.

Mrs EcKert is my niece and from what Iam told has spent a large sum of money to be rid of the bats and there are still there I certinly hope She and Her Husband Mike can be ride of them soon and if they carry a rabies the city and State should do some thing for them.

Why should the city or the State do something for them? Here's an idea---quit crying, quit whining, get a tennis racket, and go to town on their pesky little butts!

There is (or used to be) a Department of Environmental Convservation (DEC) office in Olean. You should be able to find them in the phone book, at the very least, in the government blue pages. If they aren't in Olean anymore, there should be another office relatively close by. Good luck!

I wouldn't ask the city of state to do it FOR me, but I would call one of their agencies as a resource as to what the best solution would be. One tennis racket isn't going to take care of several hundred or even a thousand of "their pesky little butts". I sure don't have the time or energy (or the nerves!)
