Ex-worker convicted in bar arson

George Piccione was convicted Friday of arranging a $180,000 fire Jan. 6 that destroyed the Lovejoy bar where he had been fired.

Piccione, 44, was found guilty as charged of second-and third-degree arson, arson conspiracy and reckless endangerment and reckless driving.

He had been fired after coming under suspicion of running illegal side business in the former Mr. Lovejoy’s Bar and Grill.

A jury deliberated about an hour at the conclusion of a nearly two-week trial before State Supreme Court Justice John L. Michalski.

Jailed since his Jan. 17 arrest, Piccione did not testify or call any alibi witnesses.

He was remanded pending sentencing Nov. 6, prosecutors said.

Deputy District Attorney Mark A. Sacco and prosecutor Paul E. Bonnano aid they will urge Erie County District Attorney Frank J. Clark to recommend the maximum 25 years in prison.

Because of three prior convictions, Piccione faces a mandatory minimum sentence of at least 10 years in prison, court officials confirmed.

On Wednesday, Piccione’s son, Samuel, 19, of Niagara Falls Boulevard, Amherst, and James Giardina, 18, who set the fire, testified that Piccione paid to have the fire set to get back at the owners of the bar, who planned to shutter the establishment.

The jury also heard a Jan. 11 wiretapped telephone call between George Piccione and Giardina in which Giardina could be heard saying,“You owe me money,” and George Piccione said,“You were paid. I was there.”

On Thursday, Dawn Piccione, 34, the defendant’s sister and admitted accomplice, testified her brother planned to have the building housing the bar burned down because of his hatred of its owners.

Both Dawn Piccione, who is free on bail, and the jailed Giardina of Garland Avenue, Cheektowaga, face sentencing Nov. 13 on their third-degree arson pleas in the case. Samuel Piccione, free on bail, faces sentencing Dec. 2 on his pleas to attempted arson and attempted burglary.

Before jury deliberations got under way, prosecutors dropped a statutory rape charge against Piccione, who was accused of a sexual incident involving the wife of the bar owner shortly before his firing last January.

The 2z-story building at 1274 E. Lovejoy St. housed the bar and a few apartments.

thank you-finally someone that understands! george is not a bad person-he does what he has 2. he hasnt made all that great dicisions, but come on, if u really got 2 know george (which all of u r saying that u do) u would see that he is a good guy that has a good heart. i love him-no matter what he ever does, and it sickens me how all of u ppl that supposivley "know" and were close to him just go out and betray all of our trust and say some bad shi* about him! i know most of u that r posting this shi*!! so if u start to think that u know the first 2 shi*s about my family than THINK TWICE!!!!
