In 2000 ( Bill CLINTOMN time), a united financial services industry persuaded Congress to allow a vast, unregulated market in derivatives, which are contracts in which investors essentially bet on the future price of a stock, commodity, mortgage-backed security or other thing of value.
A report by President Clinton's economic team recommended against regulation. At congressional hearings, Greenspan argued that sophisticated market players would check one another, and if derivatives were regulated here such investments would go overseas. Congress rejected a "Republican-sponsored bill" (read ths t-****) aimed at curbing risky investments by mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, thanks to resistance from mostly Democrats. It was the latest in a string of unsuccessful attempts to rein in the two agencies. In this case, Congress ignored Greenspan's warning about the financial risks Fannie and Freddie were taking on. The agencies were designed to expand homeownership by injecting money into the home mortgage market and encouraging banks to lend more. Until they were taken over, Fannie had 13 lobbying firms on its payroll this year; Freddie had 33. Both packed their boards with politically connected people such as Democrat Rahm Emanuel, a former 'Clinton aide' who joined Freddie's board in 2000 before he became a congressman. 'Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn'., a senior member of the banking committee, is the largest recipient of political contributions from Fannie and Freddie employees and PACs, having 'received $165,400 since 1989', according to the center. Dodd said he backed Fannie and Freddie because they encouraged homeownership. "I've never ever in my life been affected by a campaign contribution," he said in an interview. He noted that when he became banking committee chairman, he helped pass a bill restricting mortgage agencies' investment practices in 2007. By then, it was too late to stop the financial disaster. Frank had no apologies. Rep. Artur Davis, D-Ala., by contrast, offered a rare Washington mea culpa: "Like a lot of my Democratic colleagues, I was too slow to appreciate the recklessness of Fannie and Freddie," he said in a statement. |

A woman waiting at an East Side bus stop on Monday night said someone shot her three times with a BB gun.
The victim told police the attack happened just before 9 p.m. at Jefferson Avenue and Best Street. The shots came from inside a light blue minivan that stopped near her. Three people wearing dark hoodies and ski masks were inside the vehicle, she told police. The victim was shot twice in the right leg and once in the lower back. She told police she would seek medical attention on her own. |

BLACK CRIME Liberals in denial
Ronnie Austin today was ordered to spend the next 10 in state prison for shooting the paraplegic man his older brother shot and brain-damaged five years ago. Defense attorney Mark Worrell said Austin was pressured by friends of his imprisoned brother Jarmell to shoot Jamal Watts last May. Erie County Judge Sheila A. DiTullio bemoaned the amount of illegal guns on the city's streets. Under a plea deal with prosecutors, Ronnie Austin pleaded guilty Sept. 9 to reduced felony charges of first-degree attempted assault and a weapons count for shooting Watts, 31, twice in the 300 block of Langfield last May 25. A woman identifying herself as Tanya Austin, 25, the sister of both shooters, told reporters after the sentencing that Watts is faking his injuries and insisted that her younger brother shot him in self-defense. Prosecutors refuted her claims. Watts, who had recovered from a street shooting 12 years ago, has been paraplegic and unable to speak since Jarmell Austin, now 27, shot him to stop a dice game after a funeral in the Kenfield-Langfield projects on July 2, 2003. Buffalo police said they were called to the scene of an altercation between a group of juvenile females and a pregnant woman Sunday night.
The pregnant woman told police a group of girls assaulted her at about 8 p. m. in the 400 block of Perry Street. The 32-year-old woman, who is 8z months’ pregnant, was then accused of throwing a glass in the face of a 14- year-old girl, the girl’s mother told police. The glass caused a large cut on the girl’s right forehead, according to a police report. |

Jonathan Thomas, 20, of Millicent Avenue, said he was in a vehicle near Davidson Avenue and Orleans Street just before 6 p. m. when another man opened his car door, according to police. The attacker demanded keys and jewelry, and when Thomas said no and swung at him, the assailant pulled out a knife and began stabbing him, according to a police report. Thomas was stabbed in the chest and the left buttock, and suffered a cut on his left forearm. |
