Parents or Students don't tell you or the School Employees what to wear. But the boys could wear pants like it should be not hanging down past their butts to where half of their underwear is showing. And the girls could wear their tops to where their belly isn't showing and they also could wear pants that are not too tight to where they look like they are going to split in the crotch and also their dress or skirts should be to the length of their knees. It is not upto the Supertendent to tell the students how to dress for school. Unless he wants to buy every students their school clothes. But then again the students probably wouldn't wear them because it is not their kind of style in clothing. Parents who buy their children clothes are the one who is paying for them and they know what kind of clothing their own kids like. Just because the way the students dressed has nothing to do with gangsters or violence. You see so many movies with gangsters and way too much violence. Every Students should know from right and wrong. And you really can't blame it on the Parents as they have no Idea what their children are doing if they are not home.Parents can't be with their children 24/7 but they can know where they are. And also Parents can set a curfew on what time their kids are to be home. The school system has gone way overboard on what to tell the students and Parents when it comes to the way the students dress for school. Not everyone has the $$$$$ to buy uniforms or decent clothes to make everyone happy!! But you know as well as I do that if the School System can have things their way they will get it their way and the Education in Albany will help them out as they are the higher uppers. Their are teachers that wear their skirts way too short and their tops to short especially where men can almost see their b__bs. And their are some male teachers that wear jeans and t-shirts so what makes them any better than our students. I do go for the dress code but not for Uniforms. That is my opinion. Live Someplace YOU SAY YOU DON''T HAVE MONEY FOR UNIFORMS OR DRESS SHOES? I BET THEY COST A WHOLE LOT LESS THAN 150.00 SNEAKERS! YOU CAN AFFORD TO GET THE LATEST STYLE OF CLOTHES, GOLD JEWELRY, FAKE NAILS AND FANCY HAIR STYLES BUT CAN'T AFFORD UNIFORMS? BULL!

I am a city teacher and I rarely agree with the superintendent but when he tells kids to pull up their pants I totally agree. I used to teach in fifth grade in an inner city school. If the boys came in with no belt and their pants hanging down I gave them pink yarn and told them to hike up their pants and tie them up. Amazingly everyone did it and those pants did not end up in my classroom. AND not one parent complained. Respect and accountability are important. Kids need limits.

The super issued the declaration, because his pants won't fall around his buttox! Why in the world do peole want the ugliest part of the body to be viewed by the world? Do they know for sure that the skids were wiped clean? Pull them up and save the crack for it's designated purpose!

Teacher, I meet you and raise you.....not only do kids need limits,....they crave limits and structure! I'm sure you seen older kids sign up for the military. It's the limits, the structure and the certainty for reward or punishment depending on performance. Unfortunately, gangbangers provide the same limits, structure and certainty. Isn't is strange? The military and the gangbangers are the only remaining meritocracies. The Commie

I found this to be interesting .. Up to date military recruiting statistics for Fiscal Year 2007, which runs from 1 October 2006 to 30 September 2007 show that the number of African-American servicemembers is dropping. According to a DOD report young men and women from urban areas provide far fewer recruits as a percentage of the total population than small towns and rural areas. Young Hispanic men and women continue to have a strong tendency to serve and recruitment remains strong, especially with the Marine Corps. More than 60 percent of the recruits come from the top half of mental aptitude categories (a score of 50 or better on the ASVAB). This stands in sharp contrast to the late 1970s, when as many as 45 percent of Army recruits could be drawn from category 4, individuals who scored below 30 on the ASVAB. More than 90 percent of recurits have a high school diploma. The data shows the force is more educated than the population at large. More servicemembers today have some college and on the socioeconomic side, the military is strongly middle class. http://usmilitary.about.com/od/2008recruiting...

Many of these kids and their adult guardians have no clue as to the orgins of the culture they try to emulate... They think it has to do with rap music when in reality the rap dress, low riding pants and oversized clothes, has its orgin in southern prisons... Nice role models... Pull up your pants, lose the earings and bling and try to fit in with society instead of standing out!!! So true! Let's add speaking proper English to the list. Maybe James Williams can add ESL courses for those Buffalo born kids, who are speaking something barely recognizable that is passed off for English. How did the idea that everyone is OWED a good paying job, regardless of their abilities - or lack thereof - come about? Develop a sense of discipline and demonstrate that you'd be an asset in the work-place. Then you would have earned it and there's no better feeling than that.

I teach in the city and my students wear uniforms. they are well behaved and when they have dress down they all act alittle "off"

Live Someplace "Just because the way the students dressed has nothing to do with gangsters or violence." We all wear uniforms.. Some people wear ties, some young ladies have whale tails sticking out the back, and some have chevrons on their sleeves.. People are judge by their appearance and their perceived association with a group.... These kids are dressing like their idols, self proclaimed gansta rappers like Tupac, Ice-T, Notorious BIG, etc.. It's obvious by the lyrics the genre promotes homophobia, violence, profanity, promiscuity, misogyny, rape, street gangs, drive-by shootings, vandalism, thievery, crime, drug dealing, alcohol abuse, substance abuse and materialism. This goes way beyond the benign days of Elvis in the 1950's ... These kids ignorantly conducting a voluntary self-segregation campaign... I think Williams is just responding to the pleas of over-whelmed single moms who can't control their young sons.. If parents objected to his concerns we would hear complaints, instead all I see is support by teachers and parents... The upstanding hardworking members of the African-American community are tired of this crap...

Many BPS schools who have uniform policies have sought out grants or partnered with corporate sponsers in an effort to subsidize their programs.. I don't know the exact numbers or scope but I know Independent Health has granted financial support to several BPS schools in the past..
