50% of African-American males graduate high school is upseting... What is equally upsetting is that only 7% graduate college with at least a 4 year degree...

Many of these kids and their adult guardians have no clue as to the orgins of the culture they try to emulate... They think it has to do with rap music when in reality the rap dress, low riding pants and oversized clothes, has its orgin in southern prisons... Nice role models... Pull up your pants, lose the earings and bling and try to fit in with society instead of standing out!!!

I feel it should be mandatory that all school have uniforms and that the boys should have to wear a belt on their pants around the waist. We don't need to see what they have on or don't have underneath their pants. And with the girls , things could also be controlled.

It's strange how long these crappy styles have been "In style", no originality, just a copy of the least amongst us.

One of my fondest memories is that when I was in London, every morning I used to watch the kids go to school in the Notting Hill section. All of the boys would wear a jacket and a tie, the girls would wear a blouse and a skirt....in the colors of the school. There were not only native Brits, but children of immigrants from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. I could not imagine a parent going into the principals office telling him/her that their child wishes to express their individuality by not wearing the school uniform. It wouldn't happen. It's not the point of the uniform, it the point of kids doing what they are told to do. There is a time for individuality and a time for conformity. In the USA, we are pretty light on the conformity side of things.

Hi Commie,

You're right again as usual. That's because in the USA we are heavy on individual rights and very light on individual responsibilites, duties, & obligations.

The problem I have is that this individuality thing has gone way off kilter. Kids are given this individuality nonsense from kindergarten through university.....then they go into the working world and find out very quickly that nobody gives a darn about individuality. Conformity with the goals and norms of the group is key. Is it any wonder that a lot of young people go into the military? It's not for the college benefits or that because they need a job....they need that sense of belonging to a group. Why are there so many F-ups in school? Because everybody is an individual. When everybody is an individual there is no peer pressure. Why do kids get involved with gangs? Structure....a set of values they can depend on. I think school uniforms are a good thing. A simple thing such as a shirt and tie bring structure into any environment. We should start bringing them back....and if parents take the school system to court....fight 'em in court!

You're so correct! Any kid will go on and on about his/her having this right or that right. But just ask them about the personal responsibilites required of them in exercising those rights and all you'll get back is a baffled blank stare.

While I think it's fine to tell students to dress more responsibly, the new rule of "no hoodies" is ridiculous. Why should my children, who are well-behaved kids who get good grades, be penalized or treated like gangsters and not allowed to wear one of the most popular and benign garments in the stores? What a stupid, random rule!

Here's to all the Moms and Dads who allow their young little girls outside the house in shorts to short, skirts to tight, shirts to small/thin/low. Don't come crying to me, the gov't, police, school officials or your friends and neighbors after you find out your precious little one has been 'used' by some boy. It’s time to start to clothe your kids with respectable items of attire. Maybe then we'll see a reduction of the 'stats'.

I would LOVE uniforms in school. It wouldn't even need to go as far as ties. Even if the boys wore khaki pants and a tucked in polo shirt and the girls wore something similar. It would cut down on the stress of needing/wanting "the look." They can have the look on the weekend or after school, just not where it distracts from their studies.

Although, I can tell you first hand that a "dress code" can cause more problems than it solves. It's amazing how badly we butchered the private school dress code while managing to be overtly compliant, but in the sloppiest way possible. I think uniforms would get around that more....

I hate the "tarty" look. Boy, do I ever hate the tarty look. Funny, in our district (I have no idea why my ISP is Lancaster) the dress code is much more slanted toward ensuring the girls dress more modestly! The only thing they say about boys is no offensive slogans and no hats.

This is my Opinion: I do not go for Uniforms in schools at all. Who is it for you or the school system to say and tell Parents and Students what to wear. Parents or Students don't tell you or the School Employees what to wear. But the boys could wear pants like it should be not hanging down past their butts to where half of their underwear is showing. And the girls could wear their tops to where their belly isn't showing and they also could wear pants that are not too tight to where they look like they are going to split in the crotch and also their dress or skirts should be to the length of their knees.
It is not upto the Supertendent to tell the students how to dress for school. Unless he wants to buy every students their school clothes. But then again the students probably wouldn't wear them because it is not their kind of style in clothing.
Parents who buy their children clothes are the one who is paying for them and they know what kind of clothing their own kids like.
Just because the way the students dressed has nothing to do with gangsters or violence. You see so many movies with gangsters and way too much violence. Every Students should know from right and wrong. And you really can't blame it on the Parents as they have no Idea what their children are doing if they are not home.Parents can't be with their children 24/7 but they can know where they are. And also Parents can set a curfew on what time their kids are to be home.
The school system has gone way overboard on what to tell the students and Parents when it comes to the way the students dress for school.
Not everyone has the $$$$$ to buy uniforms or decent clothes to make everyone happy!! But you know as well as I do that if the School System can have things their way they will get it their way and the Education in Albany will help them out as they are the higher uppers.
Their are teachers that wear their skirts way too short and their tops to short especially where men can almost see their b__bs. And their are some male teachers that wear jeans and t-shirts so what makes them any better than our students.
I do go for the dress code but not for Uniforms.
That is my opinion.
