When did smoking in dorm rooms become legal when you can't even smoke in public??

The state recently banned smoking in all dorms (public and private colleges included), so this student should face charges beyond the college judicial process.

the "state" made it illegal to smoke...the student should pay...get a grip...a student now adays can barely pay tuition ...let the nys lottery pay or let the insurance company for the college pay

society is so set on inflicting consequences ....at least this kid is in college not shooting people and selling drugs..come on people use common sense

RE: Adam's comment

There is some logic to what you say, however, I'm sure that he was aware of the law and rules at the college. He BROKE BOTH! He shouldbe forced to pay restitution for the resulting fire with a severe reprimand at least.

So give him a break for causing 200k damage doing something that is ILLEGAL?
Is that what you are saying?
He is in college yes, but lets see his grades. Not to high I bet if he is high all the time.

RE: Adam's comment
Yes, the student is in college and "not shooting people" (although we may never know), but he was also breaking the college rules and the state law by smoking in his dorm room; he was smoking MARIJUANA!! Because he chose to be irresponsible (and careless) by smoking in his room,(and an illegal substance at that) I agree that he should also be responsible to pay for the other students' displacement- whether he can "barely pay tuition" or not- in addition to criminal charges and repercussions from Medaille! Back when I started as an undergraduate in 2001, they didn't even have dorms and I personally think it should have stayed that way.

You're only concern is that he was smoking in the room !? It was Pot, I think that's illegal everywhere. At least he wasn't drinking because he's not of age. Makes sense to me.

Burns wasn't simply "cigarette" smoking, he was smoking MARIJUANNA! He started the fire in the dorm and was smoking dope besides. He should be DISMISSED from the College as well as fully responsible for ALL EXPENSES incurred. Maybe a nice jail sentence wouldn't hurt either.

The 200 grand damage had to be caused by the sprinkler system. Yes, it takes me back to the 70's. This would be normal, a joint. The progressives as they were called back a hundred years ago have caused all this. hysteria over smoking, alcohol, sex etc can all be laid at their feet. weeping women like Oprah, you name it , they use it for "safety. "

That's what insurance is for. If your wife/husband burned down your house with their lousy cooking are you sending the money back from your insurance company to put you up and fix your house?

He may get a jail sentence for something but he wasn't even charged with possession of MARIJUANNA! Oh, That's right, the evidence burned in the fire.

Let the lotto pay for the damage. If society doesn't dish out a punishment this kid will think its ok to do what he did. and have the lotto pay for the damage?? thats ridiculous. how about all the kids computer and thousands of dollars in books that were runied because of water damage. and the studnets that missed class because they couldnt get into their rooms. get a grip men woman children whatever, people need to take responsibility for their actions.

INFLICTING consequences???
you butt hole. It is called PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!!!!
So what if the punk is in college and not shooting people and/or selling drugs, this makes what he did allright?
What the heck kind of morals and values do YOU have?
So let me come to YOUR house and put a lit butt in your house and let it go up in flames and not compensate you! How would you like that?
point is, the butt hole damaged somebody else's property and he should pay.
And because of his stupidity, he caused people to put out of their homes (albeit their dorm rooms), so he inconvenienced a lot of people, damaged property, and you think he should not be held accountable for his actions.
your as stupid as he his.
